Okay I’m going to try to keep this simple as honestly I’m pretty confused how I feel about this game.

I enjoyed every minute of playing it, but at the end of it I’m feeling empty. I literally did everything I could, fought every battle visited every location cleared every arena and got every achievement. The game could be finished easily a lot faster than my own clocked hours,

I was crawling and searching through the dust hoping for more content.

What is here is really solid, good battle system, a decent selection of cards.

Deck of Ashes

Deck of Ashes

I’ve never left a review before, but this game deserves it. I see it has mixed reviews at this time and I understand some of the pain points that reflect the early-access-still-in-development status that have turned people off.

However, I think this is the best RLDB (Roguelite Deckbuilder) currently in Early Access on Steam (Or, at least, it is tied with Fate Hunters). It is already worth the money you’d be spending on it, as long as you have the patience to spend a few hours getting into it. And if you’ve played StS, a similar deckbuilder with long term campaigns, you really shouldn’t be afraid of putting in those hours because you definitely have the patience for the long term reward that sort of game gives.

This game is great! And it certainly deserves a much better review score! Naturally, Slay the Spire and Monster Train are better, so I would recommend getting them first. If you have already played your share of StS and MT, this game brings a LOT of new concepts and variety to the genre.

It is different, so here are the things you should know before you get it:

1. the runs are much much longer (e.g. my first run was 30min, but my second run was 8hr long), so it is not really a rogue-lite like other similar games. You can of course exit and continue at any point. You can’t have multiple “saves”, but you can buy “resurrection”, so that if you die you get resurrected (I didn’t buy any, as you can use that money to get stronger). On the other hand, it does have additional cards and modifiers and traits that you can unlock after the run, like in rogue-likes. Also starting hand for each run can be drafted, which is a lot of fun! I recommend playing a standard character deck first (just to understand the mechanics), and drafting on following runs. So it does have some rogue-lite elements: if you hit a wall (and/or get killed), you can unlock some additional cards, draft a different starting deck and try a different strategy.

The Count of Monte Carlo

The Count of Monte Carlo

The Count of Monte Carlo is a novel take on blackjack, in retro style. I think it balances difficulty and enjoyment well–it can be frustratingly hard while figuring out the peculiarities of some of your opponents, which only makes beating them more satisfying. Definitely one of the better digital card games I’ve played, with all the arcadey goodness that keeps you hooked.

9/10, buy this game if you like blackjack!

Real player with 11.9 hrs in game

It’s blackjack with a bit of a dungeon crawler RPG thrown in.

Very simple, easy to lose time playing.

Art and music style remind me of something I would have played on a library computer in the late 90’s early 2000’s

like a standalone mini game.

I would be very interested to see this what else this developer has in store, because I can’t stop playing.

Cardaclysm

Cardaclysm

Verdict: Enjoyable single-player strategic card game with RPG elements. I had a lot of fun in the first four acts but the last one is a grind fest. I would recommend it on sale because of that (you can even see that majority of positive reviews didn’t get to the late game) and missing basic features (like save slots, loadouts ..)

Still worked on (balance, new features, adaptive difficulty …)

Steam trading cards (4 drop, 8 to make badge)

Steam achievements (40, require a single playthrough and most of them come naturally)

What is this game about?

Cardaclysm is a very light roguelike card battler that starts with a bombastic cutscene and high production graphics which built up expectations quickly, only to end end with disappointment for most players as the gameplay loop is surprisingly very simple. So is it a bad game? Despite its flaws, I don’t think it’s a bad game but let’s explain how it works.

The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse

The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse

This is an amazingly fun game. The first chapter of 5 is free but the rest will cost you. Not sure if they’re worth the asking price but when they’re on sale, definitely worth it.

The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse is a turn-based RPG where the skills you use are based on a deck of cards. Every piece of equipment you use (weapon, armor, and 2 accessories) will give you access to a different set of cards and sometimes a special bonus (or negative effect). So there’s a lot of strategy in what you decide to equip. On the same page where you choose your equipment is also a skill tree. Everytime you level up, you get to choose one perk - all passive.

Real player with 81.7 hrs in game

The Huntsman : Winter’s Curse is a surprising gem in a fairytale universe, totally worth its price in my opinion. The first book is free to play : a perfect way to make your own opinion about it. And since this is a fairytale, your steam wallet will magically decrease in order to purchase the season pass. Remember : magic always comes with a price.

This game is so much more than a Visual Novel, I just fell in love with its unique type. The story is about Elisabeth, a stubborn girl who used to live in a farm with her father and decides to leave her village to start her own adventure. Her brothers left home years ago and it’s time for her to look for them and discover what happened. During her journey, she will meet many good or evil characters / monsters. Many dangers await but sometimes, fear and inner self are the worst enemies.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars

Voice of Cards was a game I was either grinning at or holding back tears with. All your party members are, as the narrator puts it, colorful characters, and they get to express their personalities frequently through the random events you bump into while traveling. Who will you choose to break down this door? The big muscle guy is the obvious choice, but maybe you should ask the magician… basically, it’s fun to pick the wrong answer, and you’re never really punished for it. Much!

Gameplay is a lot more straightforward than you might think, with the tabletop/card aesthetic the game has going on. Anyone familiar with typical turn-based RPGs will be fine, and it’s not a terribly difficult game to begin with. This is your cue to pick your favorites and just do whatever!

Real player with 31.3 hrs in game

When I picked this game up I was expecting another wild ride from Yoko-taro; This is not that. I am fairly certain that Square Enix just slapped his name all over the marketing for this game as a marketing ploy, and it sure got me.

However, it is a nice experience in it’s own right. Maybe not worth 30 dollars/euro/whatever, but servicable for what it is. I found myself having a good time, enjoying the gameplay and characters.

The game shines in characters and their dynamics together. The mix of main characters make up a fairly unique roster, from the money-driven self proclaimed “hero” to the muscle-man nutritionist, you’ll be hard pressed to find a character you don’t like. The character writing at work here is definitely up to square enix standards!

Card Quest

Card Quest

This game is like if FTL and a modern digital card game had a baby with most of the fun parts of both and none of the flaws.

You build your run from the start out of pieces of equipment, each of these pieces of equipment come with cards that make up your deck. For example, a sword comes with 3 sword hacks and 1 sword stab. This is how you build your deck. Unlike any other roguelike i’ve played, there are very little upgrades you can get within the middle of a run. In fact, there isn’t really any. Every single stage comes with a piece of equipment or upgrade to a piece of equipment, but these carry over run to run and mostly serve to give you more options. You don’t slowly build up a run as you play it, you build your run from the start and see how far you can get.

Real player with 126.2 hrs in game

This is a tentative recommendation. I enjoyed the game, but not quite for the reasons I expected.

When I bought this game, I expected it to be something of a ‘deck-building’ game, when it’s really more of a resource-management game. That is to say I expected to theorycraft some overpowered decks by finding hidden synergies between card packs, but the way the game is designed causes most card packs to only work with a few others, and it’s fairly obvious which ones go together and which ones don’t.
