Dead Simple 21

Dead Simple 21

I didn’t go in expecting much but this is a real gem. Variation on 21 with special cards, play modes, timer, interactive elements. Awesome solitaire or for challenging your mates. Highly addictive.

If you love your card games or need a fun way to kill idle time (on planes, trains, in bed, etc.), check out Dead Simple 21. It’s addictive. I’m challenging anyone that walks past to have a go at beating my high score. And I learned a new card game!

Dead Simple 21 is a blackjack inspired game where you draw cards from a deck and place them into one of four columns trying to hit 21. This game is a fun casual game to play. It features a fantastic art style and theme. This was fun to play, and I recommend giving it a try.

I really begin to love this game. In the beginning I thought “Well, game mechanics somewhat like ‘night cities’, fun, but not too hard to win” but man what a difference it makes, if you add rules which add/remove boni and mali to certain cells. For 10 bucks a must have in my opinion.

Excellent RogueLite, simple gameplay that gets slightly more complex as new characters, powers and dungeons are unlocked.

The biggest problem with the game is the lack of gold drops, takes way too much grind to unlock upgrades, and after a while way too many strong monsters start spawning.

I might ask for gamepad support for those who don’t like to play with a mouse and keyboard.

EDIT 1: After playing this game for a while, realizing that four powers are better than three.

EDIT 2: Getting a high score rating for 1, 2 & 3 starts should give +1 MaxHP for that character.

I initially thought this was a fun, silly game, but with a few hours under my belt I have soured on this grindy, difficult slog of a game.

That said, I am six hours in, and I find myself drawn back to it, so I am changing my review back to a positive one. It has taken me this long to get to dungeon five, and there are a lot more to go. I can’t say I will stick to the end, but if I played for six hours, hard to say it stinks, even if it does get frustrating.

ADDENDUM: For people who like to get achievements, this game seems to be broken in that regard. I have earned a handful, and Steam shows me as not getting any. Doesn’t bother me, but I know some people whom it would.

Magic of Autumn

Magic of Autumn

This game has its high points and low points, it’s a good value for the cost but not everyone will enjoy it.

The card battling is interesting, you don’t get to re-use cards so you have to carefully build your deck and choose how you play. I found it very thought provoking and a fun challenge, but you cannot expect a traditional deck shuffler here.

The atmosphere is very nice, I liked the art style and the story snippets contributed nicely to the feel of the world.

The system of learning spells (cards) by interacting with things made the world feel alive, although it was frustrating to figure out I had missed something and have to go back and find it. Also some stuff moved around frustratingly out of reach, it took me about 10 minutes of patrolling a corner waiting for one thing to pass close enough.

It’s a shame such a wonderful game goes unnoticed.

It’s a little adventure game about conjuring everything you find on your way and creating cards from it. You’ll face enemies with a lot of different strategies and you’ll have to adapt your deck accordingly.

The graphics may look simple, but they work really well all together.

And the music. Oh, the music. Simple, same as the graphics, but astoundingly charming. If the developer releases the soundtrack as an extra, I’ll buy it, no hesitation.

Pawnbarian

Pawnbarian

I often feel like roguelike deckbuilders use a wide breadth of cards in their game to distract from the fact the core gameplay loop just isn’t all that satisfying. So, enter Pawnbarian, a game that doesn’t let you change your cards at all between characters, all you can do is add one of a few different upgrades. Strips away all the noise and gives you satisfying, thoughtful gameplay from the moment you start a run to its finish.

What it delivers is an experience that reminds me of Into the Breach, but with movement/attacks that vary from hand to hand. Calculating out the perfect route through the board to get a few pick offs and avoid damage is incredibly satisfying. Each turn feels like a tight geometric puzzle. The different characters really do feel like different beasts entirely. The titular Pawnbarian gains a lot from getting past the enemies to the final rank, the Knight Templar gets more actions by using more knights, and the Shogun uses pieces inspired by Shogi, which are often a little weaker, but he backs them up with an AoE ability he can power up by killing enemies.

I was privileged to win a copy of this early via Esty’s Misfits giveaway on Twitch (@Esty8nine) - delighted, because I was salivating over this from the ads!

The game is very much as it appears: use your moves optimally, learn opponent moves, build your army, and try not to die of Blight. It’s one of those puzzle strategy games you could open, mess around with for a bit and close again. I’ve since found the 2019 free demo, and it’s true to that- though extra time & development has gone in to make user experience satisfying.

Smart game, mixing poker with logic puzzle.

Good to spend time during quarantine.

Nice cards design and soundtrack.

edit: the april 9 patch fixed some technical issues, so I edited the review to reflect said changes.

poker hands mixes the matching mechanics from games like 2048 with the rules of poker. move all available cards at the same time and try to create hands (5 cards) according to the goals displayed in the top right corner. pushing cards against walls merges them, but you can also use incomplete hands to block, as you can’t merge two hands of 3 cards, for example.

Lucadian Chronicles

Lucadian Chronicles

I’m 20 hours into the gameplay and enjoying it very much. (The solo campaign demo, free, took about 5 or 6 hours and it was easier than the later stages.) I normally play turn based strategy games like Civ 5, so this game has a much lighter and more casual feel, but it’s still very intellectually engaging. It’s mostly a card game with a loose framework of a storyline and a fantasy campaign setting. The gameplay where you will be spending 90-95% of your time is somewhere between tactical combat and puzzle solving. I find myself saying things like “Well, that didn’t work, maybe I will try deploying my berserker opposite that elven archer, so he will lose some HP and start attacking more vigorously, because I need their ghouls to die before their skeletons so they don’t keep getting hit point boosts…” and “Dammit, the fire tribe engineer can’t be placed next to the air-aligned ballista to repair it.” Also, “I’m stuck on the campaign map, I just don’t have enough 1-point cards to fill out a solid team after choosing my best vampire leader and the armor cracker and the druid. Even after trying all the different spells I still can’t bring down their healer fast enough. So I guess it’s time to go PVP to build up some more gold and buy more cards.” Some other reviewers have criticized the art; it’s admittedly an odd mix of “old masters”, anime, and classic dark fantasy art. But, for less than $10, this is a great buy. Lots of fun, thought provoking gameplay. A very smooth, bug-free gaming experience, both PVE and PVP. Check it out!

Amazing collectable card game, and it’s free after the first purchase!

The battle play itself but it’s not an easy game. There is a lot of challenge in selecting the cards for each battle, it’s a very good puzzle game.

It also has a storyline and PvP mode.

There is also drafting PvP, while it is well designed, it is unfortuante that there isn’t enough players for drafting so some times it’s hard to find a game.

Astral Towers

Astral Towers

This game was released some years ago, and released on steam via a Greenlight:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=815924591

It’s a turn-based card game mixing strategy and puzzle elements.

The interface is a bit rough, don’t compare it to Hearthstone where you can see all the infos you need visually. To know the specs of a unit (besides health & attack damage, you have to mouseover and read the description at the bottom of the screen).

PLAY THIS ON HARD!

You can solve the puzzles different ways, and the process is really rewarding. The price is really low ; it’s really good value. If you like the gameplay, check Spectromancer by the same Company.

What is this game about?

Astral Towers is a simple concept that can be described in very few sentences (but why would I do that?). It’s card based game, where you have 3 spaces to place frontliners and 2 for backliners. Each turn you gain one of each 5 elements which you can use to play exactly ONE card per turn. Also don’t die. That’s it.
