Poker Quest

Poker Quest

For reference, this is a game I’ve played for hundreds and hundreds of hours since late 2019, so it’s seen me through some times. At first, it was killing downtime doing research, then it was procrastination through exam times, now it’s more an evening waltz after work. I’ve also seen the game go through various changes and improvements and for me there’s a few things that are intrinsic - a baseline attraction.

At its essence it’s a permadeath crawler; there are modes with upgrades and custom runs to sustain all that modding goodness for different audiences too, but Classic is the core. Discrete runs, with randomness as a key feature. That’s actually a strong positive; that there are thousands of items, different map nodes and cards in battles and you have to figure a way through it all. There is a lot of variety, but the beauty is that there is almost always a path through to victory. Fidelity to randomness is great, it gives the game an innate value of honesty and keeps runs fresh. I think realising that even though there’s a devotion to true randomness, essentially every run is winnable makes it exciting and not ‘unfair’ for example.

Poker Quest is a fantastic roguelike, With a lot to offer in its current state! As mentioned in the description, the combat is very similar to Dicey Dungeons, but with a Poker card deck instead of dice. If you aren’t familiar with Dicey Dungeons, essentially the way this combat works is that you draw a hand full of cards (the amount you draw per turn can be upgraded), and then you have various equipment that you collect and upgrade throughout the run, that are triggered by inserting cards into them, and all have various requirements for what cards can be put inside of them (Needing a flush, straight, or pair of a certain size, occasionally the equipment effects are increased based on the value of cards inserted, etc)

What is this game about?

Pleasantly surprised with this one. Considering its size, it packs a solid punch.

So, the gameplay:

You are a hero that is tasked to overcome evil. You go unto linear missions each consisting of a few encounters. In those encounters you fight several enemies with special abilities that form a sort of puzzle of deciding who to prioritizes first.

The game is unpolished and way too short for the asking price. The English translation is perfect.

Updating this review after 57 more hours played:

The boardgame is still fun.

The computer game is mostly the same and the game itself is also a lot of fun.

The interface still annoys me in quite some places though:

Noticeably:

When you start the game it takes you to an unneeded (and unwanted) intro screen. In many games you can disable these kind of screen or introductions. There would be a config:/skip intro movie,

In HoC there is no such option and you return to this needeless screen after every game.

I played this once in tabletop and was hooked. The moment I saw it was on Steam I added it to my Wishlist, and finally during the last sale got around to purchasing it.

The game is a deckbuilder - if you’ve played other tabletop deckbuilders such as Dominion, Thunderstone, Trains, etc. the mechanics will be familiar. It is not the same as digital-only deckbuilder games, like Slay the Spire or (I assume) Ascension: You do not upgrade cards, and there is no phase of gameplay during which you play with the deck you built but cannot purchase new cards.

Wildemist Isle

Wildemist Isle

Wildemist lsle is a 3D adventure game with card based battles. You are a hero who’s ship has crashed while sailing to the capital. You wake up on this Island that has been covered in a mist for months, but the villagers do not know whats causing it. Due to the protruding stones in the sea and the razor sharp reef no ships can leave nor enter. So for you to get off this island you must discover what is causing the mist and stop it. So you explore the island doing quests for villagers, looking for treasure, solving puzzles and fighting monsters when outside the village. Fights are a card game, your deck of cards is based on your items you have equipped. You can get new items by buying them at the marketplace defeating unique enemies or by exploration. The damage you receive at the end of a fight stays with you unless you can heal before the next fight, so don’t stay out from the village too long or you might not make it back.

  • Island and 2 areas to explore the Mine and Catacombs

  • 15 different enemies and 6 unique ‘boss’ enemies

  • 16 different main weapons, secondary weapons, shields and healing kits

  • 3 unique Puzzles

  • Villager given quests

This game has been abandoned, no sign of developer or any substantial mean to follow with update.

This game had some potential, but sadly the dev prefered to dump and go with this bare minimum of a game with poor translation

Not a bad game for 2-3 evenings, but pretty bugged in some missions (some cards don’t work correctly).

I’m board game enthusiast. The game really has a “board game feel” to it. Never played the physical version, But it looks similar from videos I watched. In fact never heard of the game before it popped up in my suggestions. Love the deck building and resource management aspect. Not much reviews so far for the game.

Only still in the “tutorial” section (8 first missions). Like it very much so far…

Cards and Castles 2

Cards and Castles 2

An incredible game. A perfect blend of a CCG and a tactical board game. There are no micro transactions, and there is a ton of depth to the game play both in multiplayer and singleplayer. The lore, music, and aesthetic are all great. It also has a thriving community from its prior game so it does not have to start from scratch.

This is still only early access to, there are many great plans for it in the future.

Cards and Castles 2 is an incredibly fun sequel to the original Cards and Castles and takes the game in a new exciting and creative direction. For those who liked the original Cards and Castles or enjoy strategy and/or card games I highly recommend taking a look into this game. If you’re looking for more insight, here are some of my key points from this game (Reminder that this is an Early Access Review):

PROS:

  • The game largely maintains the original’s gameplay style while spinning it in a new way to make it stand out from it’s predecessor. As someone who put a lot of time into the original game I appreciated that the gameplay did not drastically differ. However, I love how it maintains it’s own fresh identity for players to experience a new challenge

Loved this game, it’s a great mashup between threes and blackjack.

I loved to play poker hands, this sequence is also very good.

I recommend this game if you want a relaxing but also challenging puzzle game

Interesting idea to mix puzzles and card games rules. Random elements brings a touch of card game feel.

Art is simple but nice, as well as the relaxing soundtrack. Good for card fans.
