Vulgord’s Tower

Vulgord’s Tower

I was a tester for this game, and let me tell you I would pay every penny and more to play this game. It is totally worth the purchase and it is a favorite pastime for me with my friends!

This game is so much fun to play with friends. It plays like a real board game - the random events, the challenge of racing your opponents around the board, and the joy of wickedly sabotaging your opponents via spells cast from the wizard tower leads to a lot of chaos and fun. It’s really nostalgic. I think anyone who has played Dark Tower or other vintage fantasy board games would definitely get a kick out of playing this, especially in multiplayer.

Knights of the Card Table

At its heart it’s not a bad game, but there are problems to be aware of. But first the good: It’s a light game that regularly introduces new elements. It plays well with risk/reward. The DM character has some fun lines. Now the bad: The elements it adds don’t do as much as they can to vary the game as you go along. There are stretches where the order you click the cards makes little difference, to the point where it can get a bit mindless. The big issue is that there are some optional levels that are exceedingly long, and as I noted with the sometimes mindlessness of clicking through thousands of the same cards, the levels feel even longer. Near the end there are several of these extra long levels which are not avoidable, and you grind to make it through. This becomes a problem as the game just sort of ends with a whimper.

In the humorous RPG-lite card game style of We Slay Monsters, Solitairica, Guild of Dungeoneering and looks like Letter Quest. Not sure why old school RPGs have to be parodies. Anyway, addictive and balanced game. Great design and programming. Very easy to get into. I was sold after 5 minutes from Youtube.

Cards of Cthulhu

Cards of Cthulhu

Cards of Cthulhu is a casual little game, simple in design but with suprising depth. You pick cards for your deck from a choice of random two. Two cards at the beginning and more are added as you progress through the battles. Then you jump onto your motorcycle, grab your shotgun and ride across the wasteland to face off against Cthulhu himself - who stole your girlfriend, as villains in games have traditionally been fond to do.

Each opponent you meet on your way you fight by playing your cards (and autoattacking with your shotgun). Simple enough? The depth of the game is knowing when during a combat round to play each card, in battles with consequitive fights of more than one enemy which card to save for the next enemy, which card in a given situation perhaps not to use at all, which cards to deny your enemy from playing, and when to not play cards.

This game packs a lot of style and fun in a simple package, It is relentlessly focussed on play dropping you right in the game and back to the start when the game ends, which is minor but a refreshing change from the typical game with lots of menus and cut scenes wasting your time. This one has confidence in what it is delivering and delivers it proudly.

Each game you collect a small deck of cards each of which can be used once against a monster or set of monsters. In this way each run feels fresh because you are building a new deck which will be played differently than other decks.

RogueJack: Roguelike Blackjack

RogueJack: Roguelike Blackjack

While blackjack remains a cruel game at times, I feel like RogueJack has a lot of fun mechanics to make it more player friendly. I mean, you’ll still get occasionally owned by RNG, but there are a number of things you can to do to increase your odds. Personally, I need to get better at remembering how the different monsters play… or just bother to reference it while I’m playing them :D

In any case, RogueJack is a smart mash-up of rogue-like and blackjack mechanics. I’ve had a lot of fun with it so far and I think you will too.

tl;dr: Cool game for the price (3€), just check it out.

As other reviews have pointed out, it’s more of a proof of concept than an actual full game. The card mechanic feels neat and is actually a lot of fun, the other mechanics like lighting, weapons and damage types are not that important and not so well thought through.

Examples: I don’t think any of the weapons “elemental” effects trigger, being frozen just makes you hit the move button for like 5 turns, fire just kills you if there are no potions nearby, etc..

Alot of winning. Alot of losing, Ended up getting the top score but the game refused to let me submit. What really hurt was the dealer getting then over a dozen blackjacks in a row and busting out after just having 110k+ gold.
