This is art. The kind of art where bullets fly all around and blood spatters paint the concrete floor. Awesome soundtrack too, Already hoping for a sequel, This is a true hidden gem. 10/10

This game is poorly optimized. The aiming system is jank. The sound clips in and out. The soundtrack is ok at best. Some levels have a habit of spawning enemies on top of you. The physics are a joke. The levels are varied and have some nuance to them but are largely just shoot the dudes until the round ends. Despite all this, Mr. Fast is still an enjoyable experience if your expectations are low going in. I have no idea where I am or where I’m going, all I know is I must kill. Slowpokes need not apply.

The Hong Kong Massacre

The Hong Kong Massacre

I rarely leave reviews unless its something i hate and want to rake over the coals.. but i have to leave one here to give these people props.

I’ve been following this game since i stumbled over it on Facebook for many many years ago when all there was were just gifs of tech demos. I loved the style and the potential that was shown and i was hooked at the idea.

It is inevitable that reviews will bring up Hotline Miami but that is not a negative. The games look similar but they operate in a different way. There is no score here, take that as a positive or negative but the only thing that influence your score at the end is the challenges and if you completed them or not as well as a your time being logged.

“The Hong Kong massacre” is the indie tribute to the 80’s-90’s John Woo movies like “Hard-Boiled” or “Bullet in the Head”, made in the form of a top-down shooter.

To those who are TLTR in their heads: It’s a cheap-made indie game. Not bad visually, but very limited by the chosen topic and production costs. Buy it if you really love top-down shooters and 80’s Hong Kong-style action movies. In all other cases, there are good chances that you’ll turn it down after only a little while.

Just bought this game today, it runs smooth and all that, it just needs much more content. It really has a dead feel, not much excitement for capturing objectives, the best part of the game for me was throwing my weapon lol. To the developers if this game, I would go for a man vs machine approach. Maybe make the robots smart and work together using vehicles and stuff, and having us players team up to fight the robots capture bases and that kind of stuff. Keep at it I’ll check out your updates as they come out, also the looting system could use some tweaking in my opinion. But for now my review is save your money buyers.

Bullet Sorrow VR

Bullet Sorrow VR

Action packed far east, near future shooter that improves on the flaky but still fun demo.

Bullet Sorrow is like a great pop song, it’s simple, a tad repetitive and incredibly catchy. If you only like deeply contemplative strategy or enjoy reading 400 page manuals please move along.

This game is at heart an action arcade game. It plays alot like Time Crisis but with the addition of Matrix style bullet time. You are placed in a small area that is assaulted by enemies. You can teleport around (executed surprisingly well) picking up firearms and ducking behind cover. Hit the trackpad to trigger bullet time and then kill everyone while trying to look cool. Yep, just like an action hero. The next area is unlocked quickly and you move on through the map.

Grab on sale and it’s worth a punt, otherwise at full price it’s competing against better shooters and makes Bullet Sorrow less attractive.

Over time Bullet Sorrow has expanded beyond it’s Time Crisis on rails (3 long) missions and added a zombie wave shooter and multiplayer. It nice that the game has grown beyond it’s original concept. However the original missions are still it’s strongest feature. There’s an hour plus gameplay to complete all these missions.

The zombie horde wave shooter arena looks very nice however the zombies AI is a little rough how they move around, get stuck and clip through each other and surroundings. In addition I had some odd tracking issues with my hands jittering in pointing in some directions (didn’t appear to be the Vive tracker being the issue), and the teleport preventing moving to places that you should, however smooth trackpad locomotion wasn’t affected. Overall I didn’t find this section of the game that interesting. It also demonstrates the lack of animated impact when shooting enemy unless they die, this is throughout the game also but only becomes obvious shooting zombies as it’s closer up, which takes some of the enjoyment out of shooting enemy.

So, yeah.

This is going to get loud.

Maximum Action

Maximum Action

I’ve been playing this game for a couple years now and despite little there may be in terms of content i cant help but come back time and time again. Despite the game being incomplete this is some of the most fun gameplay/gunplay i’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing, that really have been showcased in the newer or updated levels. The way this game has grown over time has been such a pleasure to experience. Even when i first started playing it was easy to have a blast but as more content is added it just gets better and better. My absolute favorite improvement has the levels. The newer updated levels feel so fleshed out and despite being linear (which i think assists the gameplay) has such fun flow and pacing. There may be only a few right now that really entertain but im more than looking forward to more,

Originally, I refunded.

Let me start over. Originally I loved the videos on the Maximum Action Steam profile page. Loved the looks! Violent. Bloody. GORY. Guns. Bullet time. What’s not to love? Well, the controls, the graphics, and the movement. Those don’t seem so great… So I refunded this game.

Then time set in. You know the saying, “You don’t know what you got until it’s gone.”

I recalled the short time I gave Max Action a chance and did miss it. But I tried to move on with my life. Less than a week later, I was jonsing for another shot, but definitely not Max Action. So I played Max Payne 3. Not good enough. Fired up Max Payne 1. Closer.

(Don’t Fear) The Templar

It took playing the recent Quake remaster, but now I get it.

It’s good. Nay, ace. No doubt about it. If it wasn’t up against the stiff competition that is the years upon years of high quality ‘boomer’ shooters, this would be a completely unqualified early access recommendation.

Ultrakill, Ion Fury, Post Void, Project Warlock 1 + II, Amid Evil, DUSK, HROT, Maximum Action, GTTOD, Prodeus, Cultic, etc - be they full games, early access, or just demos, the retro, ‘boomer’ shooter genre really is booming. I also cannot wait for the likes of Into the Pit, Fortune’s Run, and Forgive Me Father. In fact, there are so many that even when I say that I’d place this firmly mid-list it’s not even that damning.

TLDR; If you like retro shooter gameplay, and would like to have fun, buy it now!

I will just start listing what comes to mind, that makes me love this game, then write some experiences from my first 8 hours of playing on the hardest difficulty so far. Smooth movement with air controll using the mouse, running feels similar to classic doom (taking a short time to reach full speed), satisfying meaty gun sounds and very good feedback with lots of gore, build variety that actually changes gameplay, bullet time, stylish awesome visuals, amazing soundtrack, atmosphere, very good enemy and level design, exploration with rewarding secrets to find, weapon swapping combos combined with positioning during combat.
