STELLATUM

STELLATUM

Good game, I very much enjoyed it.

As I see some reviews, I feel I should write something that ‘overcomes’ them all - well, I cant do that. But… This is finished game, balanced and polished. Long enough - maybe 14 hours to end story mode. Some levels are harder than others, not overwhelming, so game difficulty (adjustable: easy, normal, hard)is fine.

It brought me memories of Xenon II Megablast - my favorite shmup of all time - you have to even collect little balls from dead enemies, except story mode can’t be played through on one session (thankfully) and the music is not as good and…

I actually do recommend Stellatum, but it comes with an awfully long list of qualifiers to that and a lot of issues, so this is marked not recommended for those who are looking for the problems with the game as there may very well be dealbreakers in here for you. I could not in good conscience recommend it to just anyone who likes space shooters. If you don’t mind the things I’m about to mention though, then I can fully recommend it.

So first off, other negative reviews have stated that the component parts you need to craft items are really random. This is true, you will often be missing key pieces. As you get into later levels, more pieces drop, but more are needed, so this doesn’t help much. Fortunately, there is also a universal item drop that every enemy drops which lets you craft any component part you need. This isn’t mentioned anywhere in the tutorial and it’s not especially obvious on the crafting screen you can do this, but it means playing through each level once will typically give you enough parts to build anything you need, but you may need to craft specific parts at times.

June 4th, 2020: this is an update of my initial review from May, 26th, 2020.

After having played the game in 3 distinct sessions for a total of 14 hours-ish, I unfortunately feel like I can’t recommend this game ON STEAM.

The game itself (for 95% of it) is GREAT.

Unfortunately, the game is really broken on Steam and the developer doesn’t seem to be able to fix it to run a stable version that everybody can run and play….

Either the game doesn’t start altogether or it starts painfully but then crashes hours into it and is a hassle to restart.

Gamers as old as I am might remember the Amiga classic “Alien Breed” where up to two players at once infiltrated a base full of aliens, shooting their way through to collect key cards and upgrades to be able to progress further. Of course, “Alien Breed” wasn’t a twin-stick shooter - twin sticks weren’t a thing back then - but there’s a lot “Space Revenge” does similarly.

While “Space Revenge” doesn’t quite get the atmosphere of the classic right - especially not in the musical department - many other boxes are ticked. The combat? Difficult. It’s one man against many, and health packs are in short supply. Despite the corridors of the base looking rather spacious they quickly become rather small once several enemies spawn more or less on top of you. Add a heavy enemy into the mix and the whole ordeal becomes deadly very quickly. This isn’t a game to rush through, you’ll have to move slowly and aim carefully to succeed.

Laser Disco Defenders

Laser Disco Defenders

Great game - colourful and fun retro-laser shootout. Nice and difficult, too - yet as the levels are procedurally generated you don’t get bored!

LDD’s most unique dynamic is that your shots (and enemy shots) never dissappear and stay lethally bouncing around the game so you end up spending a lot of time dodging your own laser beams… it lends itsself to a lot of interesting strategies - do you just fire off a couple and be patient and wait for them to blast the enemy (boring) or do you go in guns blazing and get out before you can be hit by the ricochets? It’s up to you!

DISCLAIMER: I received this product for no cost for the purpose of reviewing. However, this does not affect my views and opinions of the game.

Laser Disco Defenders is a 2D twin-stick shooter with bullet-hell elements. You play as one of many “disco defenders”, each with their own benefits and disadvantages. You navigate your defender through each stage destroying all of the enemies in order to progress to the next area. You have to dodge enemy fire, as well as your OWN shots which is where a lot of the skill comes into play.

Huge Enemy - Worldbreakers

Huge Enemy - Worldbreakers

just bought this game, im really enjoying playing it, Awesome shoot em up with incredible Graphics & super cool bosses, lots of levels to keep you entertained, i must admit it gets proper hard especially stage 3 its more enemy hell than bullet hell, love the mega weapons that i have available, and great weapons in general, lots of practise needed for this game because it is a challenge and there is some neat touches being able to manouvre your ship in and out of the background to avoid enemy fire and other threatening obstacles, also you can regenerate your shields from the bosses which his very useful and gives you a good chance at defeating them..Overall i love this game and so glad i purchased it, Amazing work guys & both thumbs up from me :)

Mixed feelings on this unusual but spectacular side scrolling shooter & bullet hell.

PROS

  • Graphics are incredible. Really. Beautiful. Peculiar. Stylish. Trust me, you’ll have a hard time finding something as unique as this. Reds, blacks, glowing stripes, electric plasma, fireworks-in-the-night effects (probably firework aestethics is one of the main sources here), heavy rain, levels and levels of parallax scrolling, luxury spaceships prOn, giant mech robots. This game has it all. And swarms, many many swarms.

Visuals are crisp and clear, game design is very intentional. Sense of space in this game is a bit more open that traditional decent clones, and level designs offer unique combat encounter which will always challenge the player while offering opportunities to innovate tactically. If you are not a fan of the neon aesthetic or feel like the graphics are too simplistic, don’t let that dissuade you. Heck of a lot of fun to play with a HOSAS setup.

Shoot your way through a neon maze filled with hostile drones and battle robot bosses with cool weapons. It’s highly addictive and after each completed stage I was thinking one more! Catchy music too.
