R-Type Dimensions EX
Teominious’s Gaming Greats Part 1: R-Type Dimensions EX
While I cannot speak as to how common it is for one to remember things that happened at age-just-above-two, I can say with 100% confidence that this series has been with me for as long as I can remember. Specifically, I walked into the living room of our small, Flagstaff Arizonan apartment, roving about as toddlers do. That day, though, something different, and new caught my eye; sitting on the sofa was a new game, a PSOne jewel case with uniquely-fonted letters on a black background simply reading “R-Types”.

These are the arcade originals, with an optional remaster mode that can be switched to and from on the fly at the touch of a button.

DANMAKAI: Red Forbidden Fruit
Cute little STG that feels like a nice and huge love letter to Touhou (especially PC-98’s vibes). I will write my pros and cons with the expectation that the reader is at least somewhat fond of Touhou.
Pros:
-
4 difficulties, 6 stages with an extra stage. Very Touhou-style
-
Mechanic is simple enough to understand. The tutorial video helps.
-
The difficulty is generally digestible. You can go ham on resources once you master the mechanic, but isn’t that true of most STGs and Touhou games anyway…

A hilariously unbalanced game with a bomb mechanic that can be spammed to hell and back. Once the player has figured out how, where, and when to bomb graze, its difficulty becomes trivial, and the game becomes a fun novelty. A veteran shmup player should be able to clear Lunatic in under 10 credits.
While there is little challenge to be found in the main game, there’s plenty of extra content to keep yourself busy with. There also seems to be a hidden condition for what I think is a TLB or something equivalent, but I’m too lazy to confirm it.

Pretty Girls Breakout!
How do we make Breakout more fun and innovative?
I know, let’s add a bunch of annoying features and throw a whole bunch of shit at the player so they’re just constantly mashing the swing button and can’t properly aim. Everyone loves when you take the skill out of game and make it so it’s pure luck. Also, no paddle. You have to swing a bat at the ball.
I’ll admit, Zoo games are not that… deep. Lots of them are cookie cutter and share UI and characters so if you seen one you’ve kind of seen them all, but the games are usually so classic that you can’t really muck them up. Casio card games, various forms of Mahjong, some random puzzles games. Simple games that are cheap that you usually buy because you like the genre and you figure why not add some cute anime girls to them for the heck of it. Pretty Girls Breakout felt more annoying than fun and I actually do kind of like Zoo games. Even the ones I don’t like I kind of just see as innocent fun, but… I just didn’t like this.

Action breakout + unique gameplay + challenging = One of the best in the genre. Use the light saber to hit left or right to change the ball angle. Collect power ups, reflect shots, unlock costumes.

Fairy Fire - Defender of the Fairies
Shoot your way through a side scrolling dungeon filled with evil creatures and pick up fairies to escort them to safety. I must say, there is nothing more satisfying than killing with a flame thrower!

For this price, you get a fast paced side-scoller (just like the description says) which is really well done.
It makes fun, the upgrades do make sense and are well-balanced, some types of enemies need a different way of approach in order to defeat them, which increases the difficulty of this game.
If you´re looking for a challenge, get this game. If not, still get this game!
