ExSpire

ExSpire

ExSpire is a bullet hell dungeon crawler where time is a currency. Explore what makes you tick, manage your seconds, and climb The Spire to undercover its secrets. Create an adventurer, roll your stats, and fight your way up by surviving the tests and challenges trapped within levels of this dangerous tower.

The Spire: A fresh and new experience every time. Explore vast dungeons full of challenging encounters, dilemmas, and situations designed to pressure you to use your time efficiently. Every level is procedurally generated and designed to gradually increase in difficulty and react depending on how much time you spend. Despite the rewards that await, every adventurer inevitably falls to The Spire. Will you be able to climb to the top?

Time As A Currency: Everything from the items you buy, people you meet, the doors you open, and even the time you use deciding just how to spend your time, all bring you closer to your doom. Killing the enemies that inhabit The Spire will surrender their seconds to you, allowing you to continue your climb. As hard as you might try, eventually the timer will hit zero, how long can you survive?

Bosses, Enemies, Items, Encounters: Choosing what you do with your time is just as important as how much you spend. Throughout The Spire, you’ll encounter challenging enemies, interesting items, and moral encounters, all of which will tax your precious seconds. Only those who choose well and quickly can survive, and eventually challenge the bosses inhabiting The Spire.

Beautiful, driving, originally produced OST: The entire soundtrack is produced by talented EDM producers in Seattle. Listen to powerful electronic music to accompany you on your climb of The Spire.

Ghost Grab 3000

Ghost Grab 3000

Ghost Grab is a great arcade title, about catching and popping ghosts after the apocalypse. What starts with a simple grab and dodge mechanic quickly becomes a fast paced, bullet dodge game, where the players must use emps, nukes and dashes to wrangle a horde of spirits. Really fun, quick game. Much more forgiving than Switch N Shoot for beginners, too.

Game Review from 30 Minutes of Play

Reminding myself if I should revisit and if you should purchase.

ELEVATOR PITCH: Bullethell Megaman

LIKED: Easy to learn, hard to master gameplay. Love the pixel art and chip-tune throwback.

DISLIKED: Starting levels can get tedious causing some early mistakes in what would be perfect play.

I tried to incorporate excessively used monetization models as mechanics in the game. So you use DLCs (Downloadable Content) to upgrade yourself, you have to get random improvements from Lootboxes, paid with virtual currency. As ammunition, you use your banknotes and there are a bunch of Live Services to subscribe to, in order to gain boosts (for a price of course). No worries though, there are no real microtransactions in the game. In addition to the mechanics just mentioned, I added other additional systems to make for a replayable, engaging and fun game.

Description

In the full version, there are two different game modes available. There is a story mode, where you can make your way through a storyline. Your choices matter, as there are multiple pathways and endings. The second mode is the Custom Game mode, where you can set your prefered settings and difficulty and try to achieve better and better high scores. In this demo version, you can only play the custom game without setting your own preferences.

The enemies you face are Lootboxes with different attacks at their disposal. As you shoot your way through hordes of Lootboxes you earn DCs (Different Currencies – the in-game currency), which you can use to buy random rewards through Lootboxes. Those rewards are temporary improvements for this run only. During your playthrough, you also find so-called DLC fragments. You can use those to permanently upgrade different perks at the Centre (starting point of the level).

The upgrades include things like your movement speed, your fire rate, the amount of ammunition you can carry, etc. But with DLC fragments you can also unlock a new weapon and the ability to dual wield.

What else

Also at some point, you will unlock the possibility to build up different combo points (there are several combos available at the end, for example, killing only red Lootboxes in a row, earns you bonus DCs. Or killing only one type of Lootboxes earns you bonus DC, etc…) You finish your combos with a melee attack, where you blink to an enemy and destroy it simultaneously. The enemies are randomly created, and you can also control how many enemies you want to face at a given time. More enemies mean you the possible rewards are exponentially higher but at the same time the risk of dying increases.

The level itself is theoretically infinite and procedurally generated. But you have to stay in the vicinity of the Centre, as you need to come back to it for ammunition and upgrades (a little arrow points you the way though). You are also on a clock because there is a limited time until the invincible, deadly W-box starts to chase you. Once it reaches you, this run is over. But at least you keep all permanent upgrades for the next run.

Game Features:

  • First Person Shooter with a simple but recognisable art style

  • Story mode with different paths and endings

  • Custom Game mode lets you hunt for ever-higher high scores

  • Enemies are hostile Lootboxes with different attacks

  • Upgrade yourself through permanent upgrades

  • Kills, Combo-kills and Melee strikes earn you temporary improvements

  • Replayable, procedurally generated level with randomized layout and enemies

  • You control the risk to reward ration for every battle

Skyward Descent

Skyward Descent

A really compelling game, I started it up to see what the deal was and immediately lost half an hour to it.

The game is very easy to pick up and play, and for the most part the gameplay is easy to understand. There are a few things that are frustrating to me playing this game, though.

After defeating a boss, if you haven’t taken any damage, you get an option to shuffle around some of your stats. I’ve gotten options like “+30 HP & -30 HP” multiple times, which is incredibly frustrating because it makes one of your options useless. There is another power up called “Lucky Items” that is supposed to give you more stat boosts in the game, but I never noticed any difference when I got it.

I mean its an alright game when it’s on sale anyway but the main reason I got it is because I wanted to collect the trading cards to make the badges that this game had. The game itself does in fact keep me entertained though I really wish it still had its badges…

Sorry although the game itself is alright I’m really upset that it doesn’t have its badges anymore…

-Maybe bring the badges back for this game??

You occasionally get lots of drops on the first few stages which really helps and got me to the end. This is a pretty basic game but it has a bad b movie charm about it, enough to keep me entertained.

Null Vector

Null Vector

I can’t say enough good things about this game. On the surface, Null Vector is a simple dual-stick shooter, but dig a little deeper and there’s so much more. The gameplay is smooth and very well balanced, the retro soundtrack and visuals make for an exciting experience, and the unforgiving enemy AI is just difficult enough to give you a challenge without making the game impossible. And with all the crazy modifiers, as well as Hell Mode, you are sure to have a good challenge no matter your skill level.

Real player with 24.3 hrs in game

A bite sized twin-stick that keeps things simple, straightforward, and quick. Eight way movement and firing if you’re on keyboard (game doesn’t read mouse) akin to a true original arcade twin-stick, which happens to be my preferred way to play. Honestly, I could see this doing reasonably well in a cabinet.

There’s exactly one thing that isn’t particularly clear in the game (Nanobots). One. Everything else you’ll just about figure out within 4 seconds of having it or getting shot at by it. The classic “one enemy does one thing” holds here, and there aren’t any “go run around shooting every wall” type of obscure hidden things.
