Absolutely love the balance of tension. It’s definitely exploring things left untouched in other re-interpretations of this classic, feels like the ultimate version of the brickbreaker genre.

omg, the hexagonal enemies are amazing for all the rebounding goodness, but the little orange rounds are complete nonsense.

Drawkanoid: Satisfyingly Chaotic

The premise of “Breakout but you draw your paddle” sounds interesting in theory and is actually really interesting in practice. The visuals do the game a huge service, especially when you manage to get an insane combo. It’s a nice game to come back to every so often and (unlike say “Super Hexagon") becomes more a game of endurance and in the moment decision making rather than one of reflex.

I’d recommend it! it’s like… the price of a lunch… and you get to keep it too. Definitely gonna play some more of it!

I have been attempting to defend against the enemy since i was a boy in 1943 at The Battle of Midway. I spent my teens on the front line with team thunder force in shiny M.U.S.H armour. Several years later, I helped one of the most powerful men in the small island nation of Horai, Tenro Horai, to discovered an incredible magical power deep within the ground that gave him god-like strength, More recently I have helped smaller army’s defend against Vortex attacks and Beat Hazzards. I was always told things would get harder with age it seems they were correct. This is a fantastic little shooter with a promising future as long as we can form a devoted army to help defend against the wave of enemies.

Introduction

ExtraGalactica is an arcade shooter or non-scrolling shoot’em up in Early access. For now it only has a procedurally generated Infinite Mode where you have to protect a nearby planet named Celestro by surviving wave after wave of enemies including bosses and mini-bosses while not letting enemies escape. I was given a Steam key after the developer showed his game at a shmup discord channel but it would have gone on my wishlist for a future purchase otherwise because this is the type of game I enjoy.

It is a bit difficult to find truly great twin stick arcade shooters on PC. There are quite a few of them around, but my search has been to find something as close to the PSN great Super Stardust HD as possible. A truly amazing twin stick shooter that many of us even got for free after the infamous ApocalyPS3 where PSN got hacked a few years back. Our reward was free games for not being able to login for a month! I ended up with Super Stardust HD, Little Big Planet, and inFamous as mine so I did well, but Super Stardust HD was the big surprise of the lot and I have been searching for a similar twin stick shooter ever since.

Who doesn’t love Arcade-Games?

Waves is a typical example for one of these. You have to eliminate the opposing balls as a ball. Sounds boring but this is not the case at all.

The Fun-part starts simply by the fact that there are several gamemodes. I personally just play three of them because they are the best in my opinion.

1)Story/Concept :

| Single Player | Shooter | Arcade |

| Bullet Hell | Side Scroller | No Campaign |

Endocrisis is a pure Side Scroller-Shoot’em Up (Shmup) inspired by some classics of this genre like Darius,Gradius or R-type!While it doesn’t feature a true campaign, the main goal of the game is to beat the stages that the game offers, until you unlock the final battle in order to beat the game.Every stage is being described as an emotion.Emotions like Anxiety,Fear,Panic are some few examples. You have to beat these stages,in order to reach the final battle with “THE MIND”-which is your mind ,that wants to control you and convince you to…not follow your emotions!

The mechanics of Endocrisis range from single runs similar to Steredenn (A channel favorite) to frantic bullet absorption that feels like the Ikaruga polarity switching (Another channel favorite). There is also an interesting resource management component that revolves around your available life which depletes based on the number of bullets you shoot, as well as raises based on the enemy bullets you absorb. Essentially, if you love auto-fire in Shoot’em ups, you will need to learn to conserve in certain stages. These mechanics bound with the Neon color palette and slick enemy designs collide in an interesting game that is even more impressive when you look at the fact this is the developer’s first published title.

//N.P.P.D. RUSH//- The milk of Ultraviolet

You know what makes NPPD Rush great? It doesn’t explain anything. What many will identify as negative aspects of the game, some will find to be perfect for the vibe the developers intended.

The game is confusing. The gameplay and core mechanics are not described, or taught to you through ‘learning levels’ like so many other titles. The teletype text and short ‘scenes’ don’t give the player much more than nebulous hints, but encourage an imaginative player to read a great deal of the story between the lines. The crazy colour scheme, soundtrack and HUD make the game difficult to follow, and it will take you a number of playthroughs to figure out even the core mechanics.

Indie game, N.P.P.D RUSH - The milk of Ultraviolet, tries it’s best to bring retro arcade style goodness to the Steam storefront with it’s top down shooter gameplay and maze like level exploration, but unfortunately it falls short in a number of areas. Even with the low cost of entry and the fact that it is currently on sale for 20% off as a new release, N.P.P.D does little to innovate in a genre that has been inspired by a plethora of other indie games as of late. The look and feel are straight out of the mid-to-late 80’s, but the gameplay unfortunately doesn’t live up to the expectations or the intuitive mechanics we’ve come to enjoy from other modern classics such as Retro City Rampage or Hotline Miami. If you’re feeling nostalgic then you’d be better off saving your money for one of those two titles rather than picking up N.P.P.D RUSH in it’s current form. The gameplay sounds interesting on paper, but is only interesting for brief periods of time and coffee break style playthrus. In fact it’s very hard to categorize or compare the gameplay when it feels like a combination of less complete versions of more popular games and arcade gameplay styles.

Circuit Breakers

Circuit Breakers

This game was reviewed using a code sent by the developer/publisher.

Circuit Breakers is an arcade retro shooter, developed by Triverske, releasing in November 2015. There isn’t really a story to this game, it’s completely focused on the gameplay, as I would expect from an arcade title, so don’t go into this expecting a deep thriller backstory.

The gameplay concept is very simple; you pick which character you want to play as at the start of the game, these are based on what weapon you use, such as machine gun, shotgun, rocket launcher and laser, these classes have their own strength and weaknesses, but are not apparent from the start. The objective in the game is to kill all the enemies in a room and then progress to the next, every ten rooms you complete you will have to take on a boss. Probably my favourite feature in Circuit Breakers, is that you are able to upgrade your weapon to a stronger one of the same type, simply by killing enemies and finding more “ammo” pickups, and once you run out of ammo, you just drop down to the previous gun you were using, it sounds complicated but it actually plays out very smoothly and adds a nice level of excitement to your runs. The game play is very fast paced as you can sometimes get hundreds of enemies on the screen at once, the enemies are for the most part very easy to mow through but some can take a good pounding before finally being beaten.

4.0 Update!

The most recent update reveals this game is not going to ever improve, and has been abandoned by the devs. None of the deficiencies outlined in my review have been corrected. The Energium system is still broken AF, and the game is completely bland and buggy. Circuit Breakers is a game I watched eagerly, waiting for improvement which never came and never will. Avoid - and do not buy even at heavily reduced price - the game is not good and never will be.

Nex Machina

Nex Machina

Having never played a twin-stick shooter in my life, Nex Machina posed quite an enigma. But one thing was clear to me - shoot things before they shoot you. And so I did, and immediately fell in love with the flow of the game.

I need a hero!

There isn’t much to say about the story. It’s your typical humans invent AI, AI sees they are idiots and decides it’s time for spring cleaning on Earth, so a decked-out hero is sent to stop it.

But who cares about the story when you literally fight a robot version of Donkey Kong. It’s all about the gameplay my dude, as that’s what stole the show; The swift, extremely tight and responsive controls, fun and challenging boss battles, varied enemy design, and just the overall flow of the game. All of it is simply outstanding.

Real player with 38.3 hrs in game

I’m writing from just 15h of playing it, but I believe I can say what this game is about. It want to give us game “that used to be”. Coming from over 20y old studio Housemarque that made too many PlayStation arcade exclusive games and teaming up with one of the biggest names from days of the arcade, Eugene Jarvis who made in 80’s for Williams Electronics games like Defenders and Robotron 2084. And what this is is Robotron for 2017.

Gameplay

Controlling is basic twin stick shooter. Other then that there are just 2 more buttons - special weapon and dash which are quite self explanatory. Shooting is rapid and constant, so while aiming direction might seam most important stuff to worry about, your positioning and maneuver are what makes you win..
