Outstation

Outstation

Outstation is a shoot em up that takes place during a new frontier of space exploration. Nebula mining operations have spread far across the galaxy with a rising need for protection from marauders looking to steal the resources harvested.

As a mercenary in the out, you can choose from a selection of contracts which present different game modes. If you complete your contract, you get paid.

The contract stipulates you are responsible for your own ship and the well-being of the station you are employed to protect. Upgrade and personalize your ship, fortify the station, and destroy the increasing waves of marauders!

Features

  • Free-roam shoot ‘em up

  • Choose between multiple games modes (contracts)

  • Fight off masses of enemeis

  • Large-ship boss battles

  • Customize your ship to be ready for any contract - every upgrade alters your ship’s abilities!

STORY

A new form of fuel has been discovered within the clouds of various nebulas and utilized for space travel bringing a rush for dominance over the budding industry. Throughout the galaxy, a number of mining operations have sprung up to harvest and refine this new fuel.

This rush to harvest fuel has made the concept of security nearly non-existent leading to massive collaborations of corsairs that patrol the galaxy looking for potential mines to raid and ships to hijack. Once a scout has found a vulnerable target, the group will warp waves of ships to its location to overwhelm and plunder.

Seeing an opportunity to satisfy the desire for money and combat, mercenaries began to offer protection services to mining operations. These mercenary contracts operate on a pay per-kill basis; depositing payment into the mercenary’s account instantly upon destroying a combative ship and often provide a contract completion bonus.

This game is a breath of fresh air to me mainly because of its controls. It’s been a long time since I’ve played something similar and while flying around needed a little time for me to get used to, it was fun to learn and after I got used to it, became second nature.

At first you only have a traditional fast-firing but low-damage weapon, but trust me, it’s worth progressing - you’ll have a whole arsenal of weapons to choose from before you know it, and prioritize according to your situation and preferences. When you master it, you can even figure out some tricky combos that are satisfying to pull off, such as when using the boost jump and the rocket in quick succession, it’ll fly quicker than the minigun pellets. Deciding on which upgrades to spend your currencies on is a fun way to customize your things.

Surprisingly entertaining.

I play with keyboard and it is a little clunky but the fights are very enjoyable even without controller.

The story-bits do not make too much sense, the thrill of toip-down-asteroid/souls-likey fights and traps, the great music and the stylish/functional graphics make this game a worthy one.

Should be a great purchase eveb with the full price tag.

(I got 25% off)

I had 2 minor issues with the game, a tiny bug of missing text and a clear way to see which part of my ship is forward.

Mandala

Mandala

Mandala in the eastern languages means circle and they are geometric shapes inspired by nature and the world surrounding us. They unfurl from a center and spread out towards the edges, in the direction of infinity. Drawing and coloring a mandala has been a meditative activity since a long time. It lets one explore themselves through an interesting choice of shades which represent a creative stimulation.

Mandala brings forth this experience in a videogame.

Game experience

The game’s rhythm is not hectic, but it requires concentration and reflexes nonetheless: the mandala shoots slow and numerous bullets which move in a rotating fashion. The complex patterns are hard to predict and feel hypnotic. The colors and the music help creating a strong sense of immersion, aided by a steady gameplay rhythm.

Customization

The mandala’s customization is essential: you can choose between various drawings, styles, brushes, tones, themes and music that influence both gameplay and aesthetics. Each game is unique and Mandala gives you total creative freedom.

A linking story

Thin, yet enduring threads link every mandala to each other… like true friendship. Discover the story of Camilla through the pages of a diary; unveil her story by completing all the mandalas in the book.

The editor and social media

When you complete a mandala, it is possible to view your score and be rewarded with various marks, depending on how well you played. There is also an editor in which you can customize the output of your game, export the image in .png format and share it both on social media and online leaderboards.

Main features

  • Immersive, hypnotic gameplay

  • 8 mandalas to color with a pastel-styled book

  • 32 colors and 8 brushes to unleash your creativity

  • In-game editor for sharing your inspiration on social media

This is a very frustrating game. Within 20 minutes of buying the game, I had achieved a high score of over 2,300, and I had learned a couple of techniques which allow me to survive the chaos for quite some time. But after achieving the 2,300 score, it feels like the game isn’t giving me correct scores any more. I’m surviving for even longer now than I did before. I’m finding more of the red/pink explosive bombs which clear nearby enemies. I regularly double back and circle around at ground level to pick up all the green shards to increase my score. And yet after a game lasting a few minutes, the game claims I have only scored “234” or “512”. Absolutely nowhere near the scores I was getting earlier.

UPDATE: 12/30/2018 THE JUMPENING

Shotgun blast?! Pfffft what shotgun blast?! If you were using that ol’ thing for anything other than jumping I pity you. Seems Dom realized that and now there’s a jump button and the shotgun blast has been removed completely. You no longer have to aim at the ground or the pink bubbles to jump off them and your shots no longer richochet off the ground. This is much better, game seems to be much faster as far as the swarms spawn rate and it feels you get rewarded for riskier tactics. You could get pretty far in the past by just strafing diagonally and mainintaining as much vertical velocity as possible. Now the Triangle pyramid enemies that fly in straight lines spawn in these massive vertical towers so that tactic doesn’t seem to work too well any more.

This isn’t what I would define as just a game, but rather a form of art. Not only are the VISUALS absolutely outstanding, the MUSIC for every area of the game, every boss, every bit of scenery, it is wonderful and a blessing to listen to time and time again.

The MECHANICS are something else as well. Dodgerolls are clean and flawless, providing I-frames in-between rolls for hectic scenarios which there are plenty of.. believe me. Since a lot of these boss fights can have very high bullet density, the variety in DPS and play style that each of the different guns provide is stellar.

The other review (only one around at this time) is correct for the most part. This is not a game that you should spend money on (I got it in a bundle myself.)

Your “convertiplane” flies above the ground. All enemies are on the ground. All your bullets and rockets are fired in the direction the plane is facing, at a specific angle towards the ground. The “behind and above” perspective means that the only way you can do any sort of aiming is by lining up the target directly “due north” of the plane, and experimenting to see how far away you need to be for your shots to start hitting it. Thankfully the green HP bar on the targets is a big help to find out when your shots actually hit their mark.

This is not a good game. Read the other reviews for more details, but the worst parts are:

  • Controls/Maneuvering is basically non-existant. It’s simply tank controls. You can’t change speed. You can’t change altitude. You can’t even move laterally (strafe).

  • It’s impossible to aim. You can barely even see where you projectiles are firing to.

  • There’s no variety in levels.

Positives:

  • The helicopter model looks cool if you take a screenshot

This is a really awesome game!

There are some bugs, but not game breaking, and they have to be triggered intentionally.

It took me about 2.5 hours to complete (only the green portals).

It has very good voice acting and awesome sound effects.

The pixel art style also fits the game and it’s story very well.

The only thing I would change would be the bosses. With each portal their attacks get stronger, but they aren’t harder beat necessarily. Some attacks are stronger but easy to dodge. The dragon for example is very easy to defeat, compared to the bull? before, which is a little bit harder, or the knight at the beginning.

This is a nice little game.

Do be aware that it is short, around 2 hours to complete the main game, and double that to complete all the challenges.

On my first playthough, I was on the fence about liking the game but midway through the game picks up and becomes pretty fun. I really like the graphics although they do seems somewhat amaturish at time or lacking some small amount of polish that I cant put my finger on. That being said I really love the title screen art and the player sprites. The combat is pretty simple which is good for this type of game(shoot, blink, heal).
