Chateau Garden

Chateau Garden

I love the concept of this game, I really wish it had worked! I got it to work twice, but usually it just goes into “input not supported” and I can’t even ctrl, alt, del it. I hope this gets fixed or improved upon one day. I would love to play this game for real.

This is a fun matching game with a cute story. The best part is that for most of the levels there is no pressure for speed. Along the way you earn coins to decorate a garden. The decorating is a fun reward for earning the coins while completing levels. There are a total of 80 levels and some interesting boosts along the way. This is a delightful way to spend some time.

Dark Gnome

Dark Gnome

This is almost a decent F2P. With a little more love, and a lot more respect for the player, it might even have been good.

The pixel aesthetic is fine. The progression is decent in some areas, though rather linear. I managed to keep the music on for a day or two, and the sounds are decent…

The main problem is the grind. There are no passive gains, and within a few days, the rewards quickly become few and far between. I understand that grind and diminishing returns is mandatory for this kind of game, but here it quickly becomes absurd, and there is a general aversion to good math.

this is a really good game

the music and artstyle are great, the characters and enemies look fun and i love the creativity of some elements.

while the game does contain microtransactions, they don’t ruin the game as with some patience they can be completely ignored. i saw people complaining about the “constant advertising” of the microtransactions but all it is is a pop-up after opening the game or a textbox in a corner of the screen which rarely appear and don’t get in your way.

(pointing out exaggerated reviews): i saw a review from someone with 0.2hr’s (12min) in total who compared this to a mobile game because of they way it plays and the microtransactions. while the game does look like it would work on mobile, this is a PC game and thats what the devs want it to be. they also mentioned how you have to pay money or wait an hour and a half to play, which coming from someone who played for 12 minutes i can assume that they bearly finished fighting Charles and are still in the tutorial. the only wait times they could encounter would be from the medic or resting periods but you need like level 3 or 4 and its only like 30 seconds. wait times only get in the way later on with higher levels and health of your gnomes. (also this is an RPG, of course things have to take a while)

Pax Nova

Pax Nova

To be honest, this game really didn’t cross my radar until a couple of weeks ago when I saw an article on it and the combined planetary + space layers made me think of Emperor of the Fading Suns. It was on sale for launch and I picked it up. I was a bit soured to the experience initially due to bugs and some UI problems but it seemed like the devs were working on patches so I held off reviewing it. Since there’s been an update I figured I’d go ahead with the review.

Since I posted this review, there’s be a ton of tweaks, bug fixes, and content pushed out by the devs so I’m updating the review to reflect the current state. While there are still some bugs present, the devs have crushed so many of the major ones that I’ve moved the entry to the “Meh” section

I’ve been sitting on that review for a longer while, but I feel like with latest updates I can finally recommend it, just not for everyone.

You know that sentence, “wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle”? Well, Pax Nova is like that. Just not in the negative way, in my opinion. It’s a casual, simple Empire Builder/4X, that lets you just sit back and relax, something to occupy part of your brain not with a challenge, but heightened activity. Basically a sudoku of strategy games.

Each playthrough there will be multiple planets to explore, each with own map of different size, different strategic resources and with one of few different tilesets (though devs managed to utilize lighting to make two planets with single tileset to look quite different), and above that is vast space, enough for your starships to take turns of travel, despite systems touching elbows with each other. All of those have enviromental dangers, resource nodes for mining and anomalies to explore, all the stuff you expect from a game like that.

Stash

Stash

This game is unbelievably dry. There’s a serviceable tactical combat system but strategy and positioning don’t really seem that important. You can pin an enemy between yourself and a piece of terrain and that reduces their damage. You can flank and surround enemies also. But even with all this, it’s just rudimentary tactics. It doesn’t really do much to excite me. Also, the special abilities and spells are functional but not exciting.

The stash in camp starts with 20 slots for your character and 1 slot shared with your characters. It costs 7000 Medallions to add ONE slot to the shared stash. Adding a slot to your individual character’s stash is also one slot at a time but you can use in game materials and Triads, the money that drops from monsters and shopkeepers. Everything is similarly monetized, “do you want more than ONE crafting skill per character?” “That will be 5000 Medallions please.” The coins are priced at this moment at 4000 Medallions for $5 USD. These space upgrades and character upgrades seem to be too expensive. Giving a character just one crafting skill seems to be a little too strict.

This isn’t really a review so much as an extended comment on someone else’s review, but I thought that this would help clear up some misunderstandings about a game that took me a little while to get into, but that I’ve completely fallen in love with, and will continue to play for the forseeable future.

The original review can be seen here: http://steamcommunity.com/id/metsushiro/recommended/466660/

As a recently joined player that got past the first hour or so of this game, I’d like to point a few things out to you. I’m not saying you’re wrong to be disappointed in the first little bit of the game, because you’re probably used to how games throw everything at you all at once and force you into a handholdy tutorial in which you learn maybe a tenth of what they show you because it’s throwing so much in your face. This game’s main feature is that it doesn’t do that. It’s intentional.

Fantamal

Fantamal

HECK YEAH - I got an offer letter for college! It’s not Harvard or anything, but it’s still something…

HUH!?? This place is NOT like what I’d imagined! My professor just gave me a couple of quick lectures - like some kind of in-game tutorial for noobs - and then ran off! Leaving ME to take care of his creepy-looking animals. Actually… I’m not even sure if these are even animals at all? Professor called them ‘Fantamals’. Am I in some kind of Farm-sim Valley?

WHAT?! Someone stepped up to me while I was out shopping, and is challenging me to a Fantamal fight! He keeps his one in a weird bottle…

That’s right - Professor gave me one of those bottles too when he gave me the Fantamal. Guess I should’ve paid attention during that tutorial instead of just clicking through…

Ok then - I Got It! Let’s Fight!

Variables 2

Variables 2

V2 is a top tier tower defense game. The flow is that you start with a couple of 3x3 grids and elevator and a random raised 5 piece block. Arrange those and put your core at one end and the creep gate at the other. Place your choice of tower and then after each round you get more basic tower options. After a set number of waves you must place an additional creep gate. The gates are movable, but the core and towers are not. On advanced levels you can trade in 2 or 3 specific base towers for an advanced tower that should help you progress. Mods are random and can transform the right tower into a beast.

Genesia Legacy: Ultimate Domain

Genesia Legacy: Ultimate Domain

A very original game ! I didn’t find a style close to this Genesia Legacy.

You build your city, from nothing, in a pure natural landscape. And nature is not so friendly! You have to assign farmers, woodcutters, gather water, in order to survive, and grow.

You have also research trees to evolve, and, for example, resist to diseases, build vehicles, trade, …

But, the game is difficult, in the sense of “punitive” : you make a strategic mistake, and your village will die from disease, or starve in winter, etc…

Real player with 27.3 hrs in game

If you’re looking for the original Ultimate Domain (US) / Genesia (EU), then steer clear of this game. I paid $19.99 for it and tried to give it a fair shake after discovering it’s not much like the original. Sadly that is when I learned that if you play more than 2 hours on a game you are automatically disqualified by Steam from receiving a refund. Note to self, don’t give games a fair shake if you don’t love them after 20 minutes anymore. Perhaps the developer will one day turn this into a game worthwhile, but at it’s current condition, it’s not worth more than $1.99, and that’s being generous.
