Billion Beat

Billion Beat

I love this game, the world is always in need of more Punch-Out-likes and this scratches every itch it has, and the music is insanely good.

Only thing that could drive people away is how gross the characters look but they grow on you after a while.

The combat is a lot more ‘groovy’ than Punch-Out, more rhythmesque, if you will. Feels more like dancing than it does straight up beating the shit out of someone.

Billion Beat is great. The visuals and music are on point. The gameplay follows the Punch-Out formula perfectly: time your punches and dodge or counter theirs. If you make a mistake, your character will take a bit to recover and that is more than enough time for your opponent to mess you up, so learn from coach Baby T and DON’T JUST MASH THE BUTTONS!

There’s also a bunch of stuff to keep things fresh like “hype moves”, items and even progression. Successfully landing a regular punch rewards you with a bit of energy and you need that energy to dish out the heavy punishment, so you quickly start to get into this flow of dodging and countering to build up your energy until you can finally let your hands fly.

A very interesting Walking game with an equally interesting soundtrack. The game is similar to games from consoles from the 2000s. But this is only a plus-the game causes a lot of nostalgia. Despite the genre of “indie”, this game can kill several of your hours.

We will play as a karate player who will have to fight a large number of opponents exceeding his strength, but we will have at our disposal additional weapons, such as rebar or knives. In addition to the usual throws, jumps, grabs, our hero has a combo punch with which you can scatter opponents in a circle.

The game will please the drawn graphics and cool soundtrack.

I played this with a friend via remote play and enjoyed it a lot. There are some major bugs at the moment that hampered the play, namely with controller detection. Glitches such as the volume control reverting back to full volume in the middle of a match, sudden death rounds not allowing anyone to take damage, or being able to bring up the main menu during arcade mode and blocking up the screen, these are a few examples.

This game fills a niche that I really like and is cheaply priced. If you do not like unfinished early access games, then you should wait for more development, but I’ve gotten the game to be able to provide more feedback to the developers. I can give this game a modest recommendation for now.

Fisticubes - One Button Boxing!

Fisticubes - One Button Boxing!

[I’ve edited my review since the game brought new updates. All small edit notes are like this]

Think “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots”, but instead of robots, it’s cubes who bounce around in a retro Nintendo 64-like world. It’s a game with strong arcade roots - you don’t have long cutscenes, no stories, you just get told how to play and jump in. It also reminds me of mini-game classics like Mario Party, a popular franchise back then which birthed many titles on the N64. If you want quick, mindless fun, it’s one of those games. If you’re at home with a friend and you’re bored, you can avoid a dull evening with Fisticubes.

Punch Club

Punch Club

Ah… Punch-club. A once in a life time time opportunity to become town’s boxing champion with nothing to back you but your fists… and your elbows, feet, magic amulets and Chinese Master Splinter’s wise teachings.

The game is a strange mixture between a “point and click” and a fighting management game that works better than it sounds! You start as a young wanna-be martial artist in a retro environment and through training and fighting other people in legal and illegal fights you try to become the number one. Two things obviously make this game unique. First, its wacky story, filled with nostalgia moments and movie/game references that most people will immediately recognize, and its mechanics.

Punch Club is branded as a tycoon management game with simulation and RPG mechanics. While that is not neccesarily a lie or a shady way of representing what the game really is, I personally view is as a casual coach simulation game. You are both the main protagonist’s personal trainer when it comes to fitness and training, and coach when it comes to selecting which skills should he use in combat or learn as he improves. It is your task to guide him in his quest to become a world-renowned fighter and discover who killed his father and why.

Garbage: Hobo Prophecy

Garbage: Hobo Prophecy

Can’t recommend the game, based on the demo…

You start out with RIDICULOUSLY little resources, and then you’re supposed to survive and scrounge together a living by traveling to different areas/zones to collect more resources. The problem is that my hobo died of cold before I could get warmth (since your hunger/warmth/hygiene/energy is constantly draining from the start of the game). This makes the game a constant juggle of your hobo(s)’s resources and your hobo camp is raided by other hobos every couple of minutes. I think that the game could be playable, if there were more resources to be gotten or if there was a reliable way to generate resources, but currently there isn’t. Now, that would make the game playable, but it still wouldn’t be enjoyable imo. Quite a lot of stuff needs to be done before this game becomes enjoyable, nevermind playable. So in its current state, I can’t recommend the game, but I’ll try the full version of the game down the line and see if that is at least good enough to be recommended.

I’ve had a chance to test this game on my friends account and I can to say one thing for a fact - this game is difficult.

One thing is watching how someone plays it, but the real deal is playing it. Very soon you realise it shares some similarities with heroes of might and magic 3, where few silly decisions can cost your life in future.

The game keeps punishing you for every mistake you do, nor training too much, neither trying to quickly go through the quests will do the trick. I love the way this game tingles your anxiety when the winter comes and you realise that your main issue is not the food anymore. Stacking up supplies might help you pass through the winter which reminded me a great strategy game - Northgard.
