Panzer Strategy

Panzer Strategy

There is a very good reason why Grand Funk Railroad and Kylie Minogue released a song called locomotion in the 70’s and 80’s (respectively). It was because it made a hell of a lot of money for Gerry Goffin and Carole King and the singer Little Eva in the 60’s. It became an instant hit. It became an instant classic. It became the benchmark. So every man and his dog did a cover in the hope it would do the same for them. I mention the first two artists because at least all the others had some musical claim to fame befor trying to cash in.

In short, if you are new to this genre of turn-based WW2 strategy games, I recommend trying the game Order of Battle first! Panzer Strategy is in my opinion too opaque in its rules and too unfinished for inexperienced players to get past the learning curve. On the other hand if you are already familiar with this genre then I wholeheartedly recommend trying this game. It’s got a demanding learning curve, but once you are past the rough bits, the game introduces much great new gameplay mechanics. I hope you get to enjoy them too and that you join the community to help the developers mature this game into a beauty.

LUXO Buddies

LUXO Buddies

Fun fact: NEARLY what it promises to be. One of the most classic games? check.

Which we all know and love? Doublecheck.

Assortment of exciting new features? I seem to be blind, can´t find them.

But who will care for features (choose your portrait wisely, guys and gals out there, as you can´t seem to change it… same is true for your player name) when the fun is real - at least when one loves this good old card game as much as I do.

Enough review, I need to go back to Multiplayer Lobby and play some more =D

I could never match up with friends in multiplayer. The multiplayer seems fake - it just sets you up with bots.

The Elm Game

The Elm Game

An abstract board game for two players - human or AI - that is easy to learn yet hard to master, played on a tree stump with beautiful procedurally generated backgrounds.

CPU PLAYER

There are three CPU players to choose from. Or ignore them and play against another fellow human. You can also sit back and watch the computer play against itself (helpful for learning the game).

  • The Fly is the easiest AI, meant for casual players or beginners.

  • The Beetle is a more advanced AI for people who want a challenge.

  • The Snail is the hardest AI, meant for highly professional players.

FEATURES

  • Local multiplayer / Remote play together

  • Single-player vs. computer with three difficulty levels

  • Steam achievements

  • Simple controls suited for mouse, controller and touch input

  • Quick reference describing the rules, controls and some tips for beginners

  • Randomly generated backgrounds

  • Runs on low end hardware

GAMEPLAY

The players Black and White take turns. Each turn a player chooses to either place a stone on any free point of the board or to change the color of any trapped stone. A stone is trapped if two or three stones of different color lie next to it. The game ends when there is no free point left and whoever has the most stones on the board wins.

Hop Skip and Thump

Hop Skip and Thump

Playful Thump sprites chase Hop and Skip in a tricky, turn-based strategy game.

You play this turn-based, puzzle-like strategy game as a rabbit named “Hop”. Your AI opponent is “Skip”. The object of the game is to jump around on the game board, score points, and beat Skip. Also on the board are playful AI creatures called “Thump".

Some Thump move about randomly while others actively try to block your moves. And beware the red ones. If they touch you, you are thumped and lose a turn.

Super charming and relaxing, but deceptively tricky. Lots of hidden strategies and ‘gotcha’ moments. Fun for the whole family.

Lock ‘n Load Tactical Digital: Core Game

Lock ‘n Load Tactical Digital: Core Game

TL:DR - LnLT is amazingly flexible, easy and cheap to try out, and really fun. The only reason NOT to try it is that you already know you don’t like hex-map war games.

===

If you’re one those people who have been waiting forever for a computer version of Advance Squad Leader, or if you’re someone who just appreciates a solid tactical war game, Lock ‘n Load Tactical Digital is for you. It is certainly not as complicated as ASL, but the LnLT system is amazingly flexible and quickly translates into a fun and repayable experience.

This is an excellent digital version of a great squad level wargame, played with counters, chits and hex boards and dice.

If you pine for the days of Squad Leader fun, this might scratch your itch.

The mechanics are slightly different to most other tactical games - basically you and your opponent take it in turns activating a squad/vehicle/hex/stack. This makes for interesting decision making, because you can’t move everything forward at once while your opponent just watches.

Rules are not super-complex, but they’re not dead simple either. There’s enough complexity to keep grogs happy, while being streamlined enough to not get into having to read or understand multiple sub-clauses. In any case the game handles all the rules and results of fire/assault etc for you. You get to just have FUN.

Militia

Militia

I was on the fence about buying this because I wasn’t sure that it could keep me engaged for very long. I was pleasantly surprised to find that underneath the minimalist presentation there is a game with a surprising amount of depth that has the potential to suck you in for hours on end. I found myself saying “just one more level” until 3 AM. It’s also great if you just have a couple minutes to play.

The leveling system is a great way to measure your skill, keep the game at just the right dificulty, and raise the stakes of a single player game. It feels like climbing the mmr ladder in Dota. The puzzles are procedurally generated, so the replay potential is really limitless.

My warrior took an arrow to the knee - now my mage is wielding his battle axe…

It’s simple - simple genius.

The comparising with chess is close even though it is not 1 after 1 but 1 faction after the other. The movement patterns are simpler with their limited range but those attack patterns, swap spells and refresh abilities of your units combined with the amount of enemies vs your 3 ones makes you think - or lose. This part makes Militia much more like a table top or the fight part of a classic RPG…with 1 HP units…

Brass: Birmingham

Brass: Birmingham

I love Brass Birmingham (The Boardgame) and reviewing an Early Access game is somewhat unfair - I based my review on both that it is Early Access and the actual gameplay experience.

1. The AI gameplay is rubbish right now and is far from developed - far too easy (even on the expert level) and predictable - Maybe it is good for beginners to learn the mechanics of the game (I can’t really know since i’ve played 20 + times)

2. The Tutorial was good for an intermediate player that has’nt played for a while but for a total beginner I would draw the conclusion that it is far from enough to actually get to know the game.

Most reviews here seem to be written for single games.

Below are the questions my friend and I asked when we tried to play an online game last night, in chronological order.

Why do you have to sign up for an account for Brass when you already have a Steam account?

Why doesn’t the tab button on my keyboard work as usual when signing up?

Why is there no option to invite your friends, instead they would have to scroll through all available games, to find the name of your game? (good luck if you use the default name Brass)

Heroes of Zaruban

Heroes of Zaruban

This is an adaptation of a board game for two players.

The game takes place on one playing field. In turn with the enemy, you make moves with your cards or use objects. To win the game, you need to destroy the main card (Place of Power) of the enemy. There are no pre-prepared decks here - all cards and items are selected in turn from the general list. Already at the stage of choosing and placing cards, you can get a significant advantage over the enemy by blocking or taking the cards he needs.

All cards in the game (Heroes and Places of Power) have basic characteristics (attack, defense, health) and 2-3 unique skills. Items play a supporting role. They can both enhance the basic parameters of your cards, and inflict direct damage to enemy cards.

For a comfortable game, it is better to start playing with a friend, gradually learning the abilities of different cards and objects, their strengths and weaknesses. There are currently 35 Hero cards in the game, 6 Power Place cards and about 50 items.

Parkalien: a ludo in the space

Fun ludo game with a twist. Silly characters and simple to navigate and enjoy. Traps turn this game more into a Mario Kart like experience in which you start by having fun and end up losing all of your friends. Thumbs up from me!

It is a very good ludo, it is very entertaining, especially with friends and it is very dynamic. I fully recommend it.
