Brass: Birmingham

Brass: Birmingham

I love Brass Birmingham (The Boardgame) and reviewing an Early Access game is somewhat unfair - I based my review on both that it is Early Access and the actual gameplay experience.

1. The AI gameplay is rubbish right now and is far from developed - far too easy (even on the expert level) and predictable - Maybe it is good for beginners to learn the mechanics of the game (I can’t really know since i’ve played 20 + times)

2. The Tutorial was good for an intermediate player that has’nt played for a while but for a total beginner I would draw the conclusion that it is far from enough to actually get to know the game.

Most reviews here seem to be written for single games.

Below are the questions my friend and I asked when we tried to play an online game last night, in chronological order.

Why do you have to sign up for an account for Brass when you already have a Steam account?

Why doesn’t the tab button on my keyboard work as usual when signing up?

Why is there no option to invite your friends, instead they would have to scroll through all available games, to find the name of your game? (good luck if you use the default name Brass)

This a is great Table Top Tower Defense VR game…the best I have ever played! The Developers are very helpful as well, so we will look for more games from Dilly Frame in the future. I got hung up on 21 Wave, but the developers showed me the reason, and I was able to complete the game afterward. They still fix bugs in the game when you reveal them to the Developers. This game appears to be bug-free now, so it can be completed without issues.

Also, there is a lot of depth to this game, and it is well worth the full asking price. You can expect several hours of enjoyment before actually completing the game. Replay is also fantastic, because you have several achievements that you can go back to unlock. Superb game, guys! Keep them coming.

The Captain is Dead

The Captain is Dead

Fantastic. I’d never played the physical board game, but this was so much fun I went out and bought a copy.

Sure, I’m not a fan of the art style, and the fires on the ship are maybe a bit confusing - since they are purely aesthetic and don’t actually indicate problems, yet when you see fire you tend to assume there are problems. But these are minor points.

In The Captain is Dead, you play an intrepid crew of as many as 6 struggling to fend off ever-encroaching oblivion as your spaceship disintegrates around you. After each crew member takes their turn, another disaster strikes. Maybe the ship’s teleporter overloads, maybe an alien spacecraft attacks, or maybe a hostile raiding party beams in. If your shields go below 0%, you’re dead. If 13 invaders beam onto the ship, you’re dead. And if you spend so many resources avoiding those things that you can’t fix your ship’s jump core in time … guess what, you’re dead.

First of all, let me just say that I own the original board game copies of the TCID and its second episode (Lockdown), so you could say that I’m already a fan of the franchise. This is also the very first review I’ve written outside of an educational capacity, so I hope that you all find it helpful.

I. OVERVIEW

The Captain is Dead pits you (and a team of your buddies if you so choose) against an unknown alien enemy that attacks your ship for reasons unknown. Unfortunately for you, your captain, who could probably get you out of this situation with little to no trouble at all, has died (hence the title). You could escape by making a jump into light speed, but your jump core (or hyper drive) is on the fritz, and you don’t have R2-D2 to help you reactivate it. Therefore, it is now up to you to utilize the talents of the remaining crew to make all necessary repairs to the jump core, while mitigating disaster by fending off alien intruders and preventing the destruction of your oh-so-delicate ship.

To Battle!: Hell’s Crusade

To Battle!: Hell’s Crusade

I thoroughly enjoyed this game - and yes, the humor is sophomoric and the voice acting is tongue-in-cheek, but it just works for me. It’s an old-school general’s type game from the SSI era and as everyone else has already said, in line with the modern Fantasy General.

More importantly, I think the strategic design is really well thought out - the units each have their niche but aren’t hobbled by hyper-specialization. And while the maps are static, and prior map-knowledge is extremely advantageous, it also opens up the pursuit of battle perfection.

Disclaimer: I’ve been a beta tester and I know the developers personally. But….

Here’s my review:

I’ve played HC now for probably several hundred hours (most of that was in beta). The campaigns aren’t suuuuper long, but somehow I just enjoy playing them over and over because it always goes a little different each time I do. Like I can beat all of the missions now, but I cant ever do it as well as I want to. So I just keep trying! lol

The tactical campaign is more kind of old school in that you’ll probably have to restart missions. I do anyway. It’s kind of like chess cause you really have to plan ahead. The adventure campaign starts out easier so it may be better for your first playthrough, but about half way through it starts getting pretty challenging.

Review for Fritz Chess 17 Steam Edition (english and french)

1. English

With Fritz 17, in addition to the Fritz 17 engine, you get a completely new chess engine that was created with the help of a neural network based on the AlphaZero approach. There are also new exciting functions for creating and practicing opening repertoire. Based on LCZero technology, a neural network was trained with Grand Master games for over a year. The developers named the result Fat Fritz, which, however, needs a very powerful NVidea graphics card to achieve the full game strength.

UPDATED

Changed to positive since, I have to admit, slowly finding out content is there, just hidden behind a really unclear and buggy - for me - interface!

First I have to click “NO” on every prompt it pops up when I launch some of the modules or menus items (at least this is what’s happening on my system…), then it seems, so far, everything runs, their website connection too - playchess - only thing you are logged in as guest with sort of limited privilege, which is fair, tbh.

The Easy Game is what actually it says…easy with limited functionality…Then, if you want to access the full features, you can only via launching a game from the database or running the classic menu and then working from there ( as pointed out by Knusperzwieback in a reply to my review!)

Siberian Dawn

Siberian Dawn

The game is good but the interface is not very intuitive making the game hard to play. The developer is still working on the game so they are still hoped that this will be addressed in a coming update.

I’d very much like to see this game and designer succeed. I discovered Siberian Dawn through the Ios release thread on BGG and decided to give the free trial a go. After a few runthroughs I spent the couple of dollars for the extra missions. It’s well worth it. Designer is helpful and quick to answer questions and is working diligently on the manual and updating and revising content. If you like deep, meaty deck builders look no further. It’s got that Legendary Encounters vibe where one is constantly surprised at how thematic the mechanisms come across essentially through just a bunch of cards. Complex, difficult, rewarding, in that order. Get some.

Fun and challenging. What seems like a simple basic strategy game gets satisfyingly complex pretty quickly without becoming overwhelming with too much going.

Real player with 8.7 hrs in game

First impressions are good.

The game starts very simply, but the complexity increases pretty quickly.

The core of the game is a hex map, with little towns. Towns gain income by owning the hexes adjacent to them. This can be bumped up by building a tower in one of those, though this is not something you can do right away.

You can build units, and they increase in strength as you combine them. They have an upkeep cost however, and you not only have to keep enough money to support them, but they are supported by the town that built them, so you have to keep a supply line open as well.

Memoir ‘44 Online

Memoir ‘44 Online

This is a Pay-4-Play game with 50 free tokens, which amounts to a demo period. After the free tokens are gone, you are paying them or you are done. Oh, and if they say you lose connection before you even make your first move, those tokens you spent to play that map are gone. There is no such thing as owning this game. This is an arcade game where you need to keep pumping in the quarters to pay from now to eternity. At least Candy Crush lets you come back after a cooloff period if you don’t want to pay for immediate continue.

Real player with 27.2 hrs in game

This is an excellent digital version of an excellent board game. It’s an enjoyable reproduction of a tabletop game that’s well executed with one glaring exception- the payment model. You can freely play two maps, but the vast majority of the game requires an in game currency that, apart from some granted when you start playing, can only be acquired by spending real money. There is no option to unlock certain maps or simply buy a full version. If you want to play again and again, which you will, you have to keep paying money.
