Cavesweeper

Cavesweeper

Been a fan of BankBank’s work from way back, some of the wildest games Ive ever played have pored out of this bountiful creative mind. Sally forth me if you wrong, but the Indie scene as we know it would basically not exist if not for BankBank…

As for the game itself, I find it to be a maddeningly enticing combination of the Minesweeper template with some of the greatest storytelling endeavors of the early computer RPG scene… Wizardry 4, Ultima 4, Ultima 7 and Wizardry 6, 7 and 8 have all left their indelible marks upon this curious little sojourn. Quests Galore in this game, a day without Cavesweeper is like a year without rain.

Cavesweeper is a weird combination logic puzzle / RPG battle game that hits this weird sweet spot in my brain. The logic puzzle is exactly the sort of Minesweeper-like constraint-solving mechanic that I can just sit and play with endlessly. But as the game progresses, the puzzle’s difficulty is ratcheted up such that it can’t be completely solved by logic alone, and you have to make tactical decisions about what risks you’re willing to take to gain information. I don’t get sucked into a lot of games, but once I start a Cavesweeper run I gotta see it through. I was pretty sad when Apple broke the iPhone version after an upgrade, so I was super excited to learn it had made its way to the PC.

One Deck Dungeon

One Deck Dungeon

One Deck Dungeon is a lot of fun! You play an adventurer who decends into a dungeon made up of randomly drawn cards that you must overcome (or run away from). Fighting and disabling traps is resolved via dice rolls which are mitigated by your Skills. The number of dice is determined by your equipment. It’s a very clever and pretty game.

However, 13 hours in, I just stomped all the Fearless (hardest) mode dungeons with my Healing Spec Paladin. I mean, it wasn’t even close, even when she got completely unlucky. (for proof, feel free to check the screenshots on my profile) Perhaps Healadins are just overpowered once you know what’s going on.

One deck dungeon is a very faithful interpretation of the board game, and this translates into a very fun, albeit slightly repetitive experience.

At its heart, one deck dungeon is a simple dice game where you roll dice of 4 different colours in an attempt to overcome enemy encounters by using the dice to fill in the boxes on the enemy card. Dice can only be used to fill boxes of the same colour as the die and if the number on the die is higher than the value on the box. Any unfilled boxes then apply penalties in the form of damage or wasted time at the end of the round. At the end of each encounter you can then choose an additional die for future encounters, a skill which can be used to manipulate your dice in various ways, or experience towards your character level. This process then repeats until you eventually reach the boss or perish in the attempt.

“Build me a lair… And it better be devious!”

The evil mastermind is in need of a lair suited to his devious demeanor. Can you come up with a fiendishly creative design to bury your competition?

Each room type comes with a unique effect that is boosted when the room is placed next to supporting room types. Try to come up with an optimal design that unleashes the full potential of your rooms!

Your opponent shouldn’t have started building so close to you… Teach them a lesson by planting a room full of dynamite next to their control room! Or maybe you should shoot at them with a cannon instead?

“No, no, NO! This will not do. We need to have a puppy jail! What do you mean “why”? Because we’re EVIL, duh!"

The evil mastermind knows exactly what he wants… And usually, it’s the complete opposite of what he wanted 5 minutes ago. If the boss wants his bedroom next to a snake pit, it’s best to follow along.

A member of my party steps on a landmine, i deactivate it and the land mine joins my team, if the turn ends and there is not another unit over the land mine, it explodes dealing 70% of health to the entire team (basically a instant game over), and the same if it gets destroyed. One of my party members gets mad at the land mine and attacks it, killing the land mine and the entire team.

Fun single player dice-based board game.

RNG can be brutal if you get unlucky, very strong early enemies can present unbeatable obstacles. Fortunately that doesn’t happen too often. Also food, which lets you reroll your dice, is scarce early on. These two factors may combine to make it seem more frustrating than it is.

You can mitigate these a few ways: you can tweak your starting character’s dice so they have more balanced results, you can rush your first 2 quests to get 2 more people (for more dice to roll), and you can spend a few early turns on a food-rich square to stock up. You can still end up totally screwed, in which case just chalk it up to bad luck and restart.

Allright, this game is surprisingly great!

Its price may even be too low, although music and maybe graphics are not that great (but who cares about the latter when the gameplay is great)

The game is based around luck with dice. You can be against this kind of game, but in this game, I believe it works. I have played 2 games now and I even won the 2nd already. I must have had lots of luck or… In any case, I will certainly play again, I had great fun with this game and I got my money’s worth!

P.s. I bought this game after seeing that the developers added a release for Linux in less than two weeks after just one person asked for it. These devs are great and should be supported!

Tharsis

Tharsis

Elder Sign and Alien Frontiers' ugly baby

Tharsis is basically a cheap, space-themed copy of Elder Sign . I’m not giving this thumbs-down because it’s difficult and sometimes you’ll lose just because of bad luck. I liked Elder Sign enough to buy each one of its overpriced expansions (on the iPad version), because although Elder Sign does a piss poor job of explaining how the game works, it’s actually FUN and gives you enough control over the chaos to be satisfying. In contrast, Tharsis feels more like the Iraqi version of Wheel of Fortune: https://youtu.be/Cz8cSpRmowM?t=1m1s

I love board games, I don’t hate dice, I usually like a good strategy challenge, and I think space & Mars are cool - So I can recommend this to people like me when it is on sale for at least half off. YOU SHOULD KNOW: I’d ignore reviews before August 2016 because a patch was added with a better tutorial, bug fixes, and some missions - All of which were significant additions to the game (at least for me). If you expect something more than a turn based board game, you’re gonna have a bad time. Also, I strongly encourage doing the Training missions before or after beating Easy as well as picking crew abilites that best main reasons for losing a game - Without these I could’ve rage quit before beating Normal mode. Now for a full breakdown that I haven’t seen anyone else give like this, followed by exactly what turns consist of:

A Token War

A Token War

A good game to mellow out to, but also one that will challenge you, especially in the later levels. Excellent art and soundtrack make it feel like a handcrafted wooden board game. Gameplay is something of a cross between Hearthstone and XCOM. I would recommend this game to any fan of turn-based tactical or deck-building games, or a casual gamer looking for a board game-like experience.

Really fun and challenging game! The roguelike aspect + genuinely difficult strategic levels mean that first time you get knocked back to a checkpoint it can be a blow to your ego, but that’s nothing compared to how good it feels to get past the battle you got stuck on.

The details of the game are great too, the cheeky descriptions make me actually chuckle and I love the cute token drawings. The audio is another highlight - the sound effects perfectly match the tokens and the music is engaging and fun to listen to even when you’re on your third or fourth attempt at a section.
