Fury of Dracula: Digital Edition

Fury of Dracula: Digital Edition

I hadn’t played this game since the 1st edition that came out in the 80s. Back then three Hunters chased a nearly-impotent Dracula around the map, eventually slaying him. Nearly every time, anyway. Dracula had hidden movement behind a screen, and left some rumors in his wake, but the damnable hunter cards would give him away at horrible times, and if you encountered him he would get caught during the day more than half the time (you rolled a die, but the hunters had more cards) - a vampire during the day is as feeble in combat as you would think. We called it “The Frustration of Dracula.” He was fun to play, but it was very difficult to win with him. Still, I have fond memories.

While no game is ever going to translate perfectly from the board to digital I have to tip my hat to Nomad games for taking on Fury of Dracula, not just for doing it, but doing a very capable job.

*When you read negative reviews about the lack of 1 vs 4 during initial roll out of the game, I have to point out that this was clearly posted on the store page well in advance and in the discussions. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone and it’s a poor excuse to give a thumbs down. It was perfectly clear and the developers have repeatedly stated why they released it as 1 vs 1 and 1 vs AI initially, along with their plans to work on and release 1 vs 4. Understandably, the developers want to get it right, so we just need to be patient. Their professionalism and consistent feedback to our inquiries leads me to believe they will get it done.

Jgsw

This is genuinely the best jigsaw program I’ve had the pleasure to use. I’ve been searching for a long time for a jigsaw puzzle program that has it all: custom jigsaws, high piece counts, multiplayer puzzling, and a single up-front price, and after all this time, I found JGSW. While there are a few small bugs having to do with physics (the pieces have physics!) over a network, just about everything else is perfect. Very well done, Sean!

This is the best iteration of a puzzle game I’ve played yet. Plus it lets you use whatever image you want with no issues! The pieces feel pretty darn solid to rotate and place and move. Every once in a while the puzzle will get overexcited about a particularly important snap and “bounce” up, but usually the piece physics are just fine. More people need to try this one, honestly. No regrets. And not only is it fun on your own, but it has multiplayer!

TL;DR: If you love doing jigsaw puzzles and want a digital version, it’s this one. You won’t be disappointed.

Dots n Lines

Dots n Lines

Dots n Lines (Dots and Boxes) game is a classic and old school game brought you by Lighthouse Studio Europe.

The game starts with an empty grid of dots. Usually two players take turns adding a single horizontal or vertical line between two unjoined adjacent dots.

A player who completes the fourth side of a 1×1 box earns one point and takes another turn. (A point is typically recorded by placing a mark that identifies the player in the box, such as an initial.)

The game ends when no more lines can be placed. The winner is the player with the most points.

Monster Jaunt

Monster Jaunt

This game has that classic Nintendo couch party vibe. I’ve played it with a few different groups of people, and it seems to work well with both frequent and casual gamers. The minigames have a good amount of variety to them, and there’s enough minigames to give it a plenty of replayability. One particularly nice touch is the adorable art of the hybrid creatures in the game. I’ve fallen in love with the panda/andaconda hybrid"pandaconda" and the fiery otter “magmotter”.

Favorite minigame:

I would heartily recommend Monster Jaunt for anyone looking for a new party game.

The mini games give you a variety of challenges that mostly focus on skill and not pure chance. The board game is engaging and yet lightweight enough to be understood at a glance. Nearly the entire game allows for simultaneous play, so you don’t lose engagement while someone else it taking their turn. The Remote Play Together integration works wonderfully, as expected. Being able to play a local game across the country with little detriment is a huge bonus feature for a game like this.

Sophie’s Dice

Sophie’s Dice

SUPERB dice tool. The best I’ve ever used, and believe me, I’ve used a LOT. It might seem weird at first, especially if you’re coming from Tabletop Simulator, but believe me. Give it a chance and play around with the customization tools and you won’t be sorry.

Features like expressions (being able to automatically explode dice, exclude dice from a total based on context such as when rolling for D&D stats, and more are now essentials for me), automatic grouping and rotation of dice after the roll, and various ways to count dice have really made this my one and only dice roller.

I use Sophie’s Dice as a dice roller for my Tabletop Roleplaying game group. Absolutely love it. Plenty of options, beautiful design options. Most importantly, the dice roller is extremely fair.

Version 1.1

Love the new design options, particularly the Magic material type. They added a “realistic rolling” function that makes dice act more like their more physical counterparts. I’ll never use that feature (I’m all about that randomness), but I’m glad they give that option. They also make it clear when it’s being used, so you can’t be sneaky during game sessions.

Sumerian Blood: Gilgamesh against the Gods

Sumerian Blood: Gilgamesh against the Gods

Oh hey Archon, longtime no see. No, really, this game is indeed an Archon, and seems like it would have easily fit in back in the early EA days, alongside Adept and Mail Order Monsters.

Sumerian Blood almost feels like a prequel to Archon. The various units are nicely diverse, the combat’s fun, and it’s easy enough to aim and control. You’ve got various units that fling spikes, bouncing arrows, homing balls, or just throw themselves explosively at enemies, so combat’s going to stay fresh for awhile.

Pretty fun. Somewhat janky combat, but that’s part of the appeal. I’d love to see a sequel with more options / game customization and tighter controls.

Castles & Catapults

Castles & Catapults

Re-live this classic medieval strategy game, Castles & Catapults, which combines the turn-based planning of a board game with the action and excitement of a real-time strategy game.

Players must construct and defend their own castles while amassing an army to attack their opponent with. Each “day” in the game is divided into three phases, with players taking turns spending money on their castle or their army in the first, amassing their forces in the second phase, and then going into the final, real-time combat phase. Castles & Catapults is packed with the best in medieval warfare–building castles, storming walls, demolishing armies, and, of course, battling dragons.

Chess Mega Bundle

Chess Mega Bundle

Chess finally has its own 200-in-1 multicart. Atomic, 960, double 960, Horde, three-player and four-player chess - if you can name a chess variant, it’s probably in here.

The design is functional but very bare - you can pick different board and piece designs, but it’s missing a couple of niceties present in other chess clients. In particular, there’s no move list or analysis board, which is disappointing (if understandable – I don’t envy the person who has to figure out algebraic notation for a circular board). The sound effects are also missing alerts for captures or checks.

Real player with 1.5 hrs in game

I have to things to say about this game.

Good point - It does have many Chess variants and many of them are played online at various Chess sites.

Bad point - The GUI for this game is in serious need of work if this game is to compete with similar programs already on the market that also offer many variants and in some cases are free. The GUI in my opinion does not look professional, especially when compared to other computer programs. If the GUI were dramatically updated I would consider changing my evaluation of this program.

People have always been interested in challenging the mind with mind games and exercise the brain with brain training games. Our brain is a muscle and just like every other muscle. It needs exercise to develop and keep fit!

Try in two playing modes to break the code:
