Path of Giants

Path of Giants

Path of Giants is a perfectly adequate puzzle game. You play as three bundled-up explorers searching a snowy, mountainous area for the lost treasure of the giants. It quickly becomes clear that there are no giants to speak of (save as large, frozen things in the background); rather, this is a pure puzzle game, with no enemies in it whatsoever.

The goal is to get each of the three explorers to a little appropriately colored platform on the far side of the level, and the game pretty much everything it can do with a very limited number of mechanics.

Path of Giants is a lovely puzzle game that is well-crafted and quite fun. Take control of three explorers and help them navigate their paths through the 12 main-story levels in their quest for a lost treasure. There is 1 bonus level after that and what appears to be 4 seasonal levels too. The game has a mobile version for Android and iOS, but I did not try that one and I do not know if there’s a difference.

Frustrating.

This game started out promising.

Relaxing music, not too difficult maze, nice animation of a running cat, …

I liked the game instantly and felt like it would be a nice way to relax.

But the further I got in the game, the more I felt like the goal of the creators was to irritate us.

The “difficulty” of the mazes was the increasing length and the smaller size. Everything became smaller so it’s not a game for people with bad eyesight! And the mazes were super easy but just really long. The music also became more irritating. Sounds that don’t fit together and “singing”?

Overall exactly what I expected, with a few issues -

The fact that it gets smaller with each stage wouldn’t bother me had they kept to a light colored background and tiles - a black cat would show up fine in contrast. I was able to see fine in all the stages, it just was more annoying on those.

I really, really wish the LoFi didn’t have any speaking to them. It made me jump multiple times, and just pulled me out of the relaxing mood. It’s only in a few of them, but I personally didn’t enjoy it.

Spring Bonus

This is the second casual coffee-break friendly match-3 I’ve played from Grey Alien, and I’m going to say this is an improvement over Holiday Bonus Gold. Besides there being a lot more variety in your screen-to-screen goals (you may have to match a certain number of a particular tiles, allow some unmatchable tiles to drop down the bottom, break some frozen tiles or a combination), the easy access to the Timed mode gives the game a lot more urgency. I’m usually not a fan of hurried puzzle games, but until level 98 (curse you level 98…), I had no problems beating the allotted times for each round. Cheerful music, though the art does look a bit Hallmark card-ish. Looking forward to rounding out the trilogy with Spooky Bonus next.

Enjoyable cute Match-3 with good game length (played through all 100 levels). Nice for relaxing :)

Soundtrack gets annoying after a while, though you can disable it.

There are no Steam cards, Steam backgrounds or achievements for it though.

Intrepid Izzy

Intrepid Izzy

Intrepid Izzy is a great game that has the old school charm with new age design, graphics, and personality. This game reminds me of the “New Super Mario” games on Wii or Switch. There is that nostalgic feeling while playing these games but also a fresh and relevant game play for 2020.

Playing Intrepid Izzy, you have the freedom to move around and re-enter stages. This is part of the games charm, as you acquire new suites while going to different levels. These suites give Izzy powers, such as fly/glide or climbing walls. As Izzy progresses through the game, she can go back to previous stages to find additional key items.

This is a case study on how important sounddesign is in a game. Visually the game is top notch but then you have 15 sec looping music and bad stock sound effects that really distract from the experience.

I do recommend the game but only with the music turned off.

Dooria

This is a great game for someone who has some time on their hands and likes to figure things out. Each section of the game has its own rules, which provides for a good deal of variety. It has a pleasant atmosphere throughout and is contemplative as opposed to action-packed. A lot of bang for the buck at $16.

If you want to get your ass handed to you by a gentle sweet game with calming music and the meanest puzzles I’ve seen in a while, by all means try this game out. This really itched a part of my lizard brain I that I had been missing from other puzzle games.

Downsides are: 1) It can be frustrating and tricky to figure out all of the rules at first (due to some differing door varieties and etc) and 2) it’s not easy to figure out the “plot” of what all doors to open and how close you are to being finished…. but overall definitely persevere if you’re a puzzle junkie like myself.

Hidden Paws

Hidden Paws

This is a game that you play at your own speed, in your own time and you can spend as much or as little time with it as you want. Navigate each island using your mouse to move in three dimensions when you find a cat, click on it and be rewarded with a little stream of pink hearts. These cats are clever though, and will hide in logs, under a barrel lid, behind a tree or (less surprisingly) in a cardboard box. But they are not mean cats and will call out to you when you get near to their hiding place. The balls of wool need to be found on their own though.

Hidden Paws is an adorable 3D hidden object game, in the style of Where’s Waldo , except with cats.

Throughout the 16 levels, you’ll be challenged to find various numbers of yarn balls and kitties which are very well hidden in buckets, boxes, behind window blinds, under benches, in the car trunks, inside plant pots etc - they’re basically everywhere. You’ll need to click literally everything to find them all, and boy, that’s going to be a lot of clicking and exploring. Every object responds to the clicks with a specific sound and this makes the game very interactive and fun to play. To mention are also the cute little hearts that a cat makes after it’s “discovered” or the adorable meow-ing noises which signals the presence of a cat nearby.

Special note : This Key was provided by the developer, and not for reviewing purposes but to see how the game runs on my PC laptop, I have an Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 1TB(5400rpm)HDD, NVIDIA OPTIMUS GeForce GT740m video card with in my lovely GIGABYTE laptop, and to be honest I did not think my laptop could even run this game.. SO therefore My Review is solely my choice, and NOT because of a " free key" OK. I just want to make this clear to all who read my review and rate it at will.

Bottle feels more like a bonus chapter of Drizzlepath: Genie rather than a standalone game, although playing Genie before Bottle is not at all required. For those that have previously played Genie, the setting will feel very familiar - you’ll be wandering on a similar path, even with a similar cave, only this time everything is covered in snow. Although the main feelings that the game generates remain: the calm, the stillness, the introspection, meditation, relaxation, there are quite a few notable differences from Genie.

Röki

Röki

Röki does everything right and was a real pleasure for me to play. It has an amazing story line with beautiful visuals and sound design and intriguing characters. The game mechanics are exceptionally well executed. Let’s go through these items from end to beginning.

The game is played with a controller which I found incredible since the game is a point-and-click adventure at its core: In order to progress through the story, which is pretty much linear, you have to find/combine certain items. In my opinion, the controller integration works outstandingly well and, in fact, removes the one thing that has me troubled with modern p&c adventures: having played my first p&c game about thirty years ago, the contraints of indirectly moving your avatar through mouse clicks feels “old” and tedious to me by now. Using a controller feels so much more natural and allowed for me to empathise with the game avatar in a much deeper way while still keeping all the other characteristics of a p&c title, mainly progressing through the story in a non-violent way by solving one mini-quest at a time.

Step into a magical world of Scandinavian folklore and experience a heartwarming story of a family lost and regained carefully handcrafted by the Polygon Treehouse that will not fail to tug at your heartstrings. Before starting the game, stay on the main menu awhile and just listen.

The visuals are straight out of a fairytale, bold, clear, charming and sweet, but there’s just a slight undercurrent of dread and uneasiness painted in there to make it lean towards the vibe of the original versions of Grimm brother’s popular folk tales, just packed into more child friendly interpretations. The ambience sets itself as magical straight from the start, as the two siblings, Tove and Lars walk home. And it just builds on that first brush with fantasy, combining excellent ambient sounds and a haunting, beatiful soundtrack, becoming really mesmerizing to look at and listen to as it progresses. Characters don’t talk, it’s not needed, but do make sounds at each sentence and it fits the fairytale style. But at times, the sounds seemed just slightly excessive, never to the point of annoying though, but they could still be toned down a little.
