it is hard to review Trine 1, with Trine 2 and Trine 4 - much better and polished games - being around, but reviewing the game solely on the following games' experience isn’t fair, so let’s check game’s its own merits but keep in mind that the latter installments are far superior than Trine 1. if you are stingy on money, then look for Trine 2 or Trine 4 instead

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince
Playing Trine 4 right after Finishing T1,2 and 3.. The revert and a step back to Trine 2 design rejuvenate my faith for the game.
First of all, the concerning about Trine 4 continuing what they did in Trine 3 is gone. Trine 3 never existed in Trine 4 universe other than the inherrited assets and ideas (which also ruined Trine 4 in a way).
The Devs start a new story in Trine 4 with nothing related to Trine 3. Trine 3 never existed. You don’t get to see the ending of Trine 3, but you also don’t have to worry about getting half a game continued from a previous badly made one. This here is a full game of its own.

easy 100% - achievements order you to either finish a level or collect all obtainables. plenty of guides, plus it isn’t hard to find them on your own. DLC doesn’t contain any achievements, so you may skip it and still get 100% (unlike in Trine 2)
Trine 2 or Trine 4?
any of them will be good. Trine 4 has better graphics, polished HUD and better UX; Trine 2 has a better puzzle-combat flow. in other words one game nailed the presentation, another got gameplay right - but either of them will be a nice choice. I prefer Trine 2, tho

among all Trine games that one has the hardest achievements. some of them are annoyingly difficult, like beating the whole game on hard difficulty with hardcore settings on (basically, you get killed from 1-2 hits and no checkpoints). another set of achievements, like “beat the whole level using only character X”, is tricky and require good timing/precision. not the hardest deal ever, but still more challenging than you would expect from this game. also, some achievements require DLC (“Goblin Menace”), but it became a part of game (merged into) a long time ago, so you no longer need to buy it separately, which is awesome (just buy “Trine 2: Complete Story”)

Steady
A simple, yet brutally difficult game of patience and precision wrapped in a beautiful, minimal visual style. The 50 levels will undoubtedly be plenty of content to overcome, but the game also features a Star ranking system to add another layer of challenge to complete levels within time limits.

Backworlds
This is a very good puzzle platformer with quality content, more then enough puzzles and a good soundtrack.
When I started playing this game I was bored, the puzzles were too easy and I wanted to stop playing it. I was 8 hrs into this game when I relized this game had potential and after finishing every single puzzle (only 5 % completed all the puzzles) I am happy to say that this game was worth my time and money. In this game you are free to go almost wherever you want so you can start any puzzle at any time except some locked doors and bosses. The main mechanic is a paint brush and you control it with your mouse, you will have to use it constantly because you will solve every puzzle using it. The harder levels are really what made me like this game so much, if you get to the levels where you have to use all mechanics learned through out the game you are in luck because they are some of the best created levels in a puzzle platformer I played in a long time. I am sure I solved some levels in my way and I am sure that was the intention of developers.

Very good puzzle metroidvania. Every world has a new mechanic tied to the secondary world you access via painting a part of the screen.
It’s a shame this isn’t more widely known.

A Juggler’s Tale
Some comparisons have been made to games like “Little Nightmares”, and at first, that seemed far fetched, but it actually turned out to be kinda true: even though this game isn’t nearly as horror-themed, there are several scenes which are moody and scary and also involve chase sequences.
The story itself is presented as an actual story, with the narrator doing a great job setting the tone and also, sometimes, explaining what to do if the player ever gets stuck. The mechanics and riddles might not be that innovative to players who are familiar with these kinds of games, but for newcomers, there are several tricky parts. I especially struggled with some of the scenarios, but managed to solve them without needing to look anything up online. So, if I can do it, pretty much everyone can do it. There are even some nice conceptual twists thrown in, with drastic turns you might not expect. It has an undeniable meta-quality to it, and the game takes good advantage of that.

A very entertaining and beautiful puzzle adventure game, but solutions are a little obvious and game time could be longer.
A Juggler’s Tale is a charming fairy tale adventure with puzzle and platform elements.
Abby, is being held hostage. Confined in a cage, she is only released to perform circus tricks for scraps of food. The ring master is mean and domineering, and her life is tedious and unfulfilled.
All she wants to do is break free from her prison and see the world.

Maquette
A good game, but not worth $20.
I haven’t kept up with this game much after the initial announcement but after seeing how cool it looked I decided to blind buy it.
What I didn’t realize is that this isn’t really a puzzle game so much as the game is a medium to tell a love story.
That’s fine because other games like Edith Finch/Story About My Uncle have done this great, but my god I have not felt this disappointed in a long time.
I expected some loose story to go with this game about wacky mindbending puzzles and I got the complete opposite.

I was super excited for this game, and immediately purchased and downloaded it as soon as it was possible on Steam. I grew up with games that used to be called “adventure games” but today are generally labelled “walking simulators”. ‘Myst’ was the first computer game I played and ended up being hugely influential on my gaming tastes along with its sequel ‘Riven’ and then the forgotten classic ‘Obsidian’.
So obviously a game like ‘Maquette’ immediately piqued my interest and I waited and watched for any updates on it that I could find, especially after finishing ‘The Witness’, I needed something to fill that adventure/walking/puzzle game void that was left.

DEEMO -Reborn-
DEEMO -Reborn- is a musical, beautiful & charming experience, in which it combines
rhythmic arcade-ish gameplay (hitting keys at the right time, in the same essence as OSU!mania/DJMax etc)
& solving clever and semi-demanding riddles/puzzles, so that you can unlock more songs to play, more areas to explore
& to progress the story further.
The Story is quite mystical & very emotional, with many but short cutscenes and a few dialogues that explains what’s going on. Voice over is only in Japanese (with english subtitles ofc)

I’m honestly so split with this port of the game. I feel like it’s a lot easier to play with keyboard, which is both good and bad. I’m glad it makes it more accessible to others, but now this is just like the NS port all over again. If you play on this version people are more likely to think you aren’t as skilled because now you can just hold SPACE and don’t have to wiggle joysticks.
Plus the fact that VK songs, Cytus 1 & 2, Egoist, AND Rayark 3 packs aren’t available is extremely disappointing. Because of the loss of almost 20 songs, the game feels a lot more empty and I’m just more tempted to boot my PS4 up to play Alone with you or Parousia.

Omno
I am legally required to mention the game Journey in any review of Omno. So here it is: Journey. The creative collapsed civilisation. The novel flowing ways of getting around. The faultless graphics. The breathtaking bugless scenery, the bizarre life-forms. Omno is not as good as Journey, of course, but nothing is.
You figure out things about the collapsed civilisation. You solve puzzles and complete sequences of jumps. The puzzles aren’t very difficult, and I never shouted “Well, how was I meant to guess that ?!” at the screen. The jumps are mostly a case of figuring out what keys to press and when. None of them require pixel-perfect positioning. You can’t die. If you manage to get into an unsafe position you are just warped back to the most recent savepoint, with progress intact.

Omno
A relaxing and a reflective journey through a lost civilization. An interesting array of creatures, the sumptuous soundtrack, and the colorful aesthetics make the trip worth the effort.
Omno is a single player, third person, exploration and puzzle adventure.
As a staff bearer it is your duty to discover and retrace your ancestors’ footsteps. Travel through an ancient world filled with creatures who respond to your command and release a life force you can harness and power. Collect enough resources to carry on your journey, along the way learning more about the past and the lost civilization which lays broken before you.

Chimeras: Cherished Serpent Collector’s Edition
This is the first game I’ve played in the series. I don’t know if it is the beginning, middle or the ending, but what I can say for sure is that not a single HOPA game I’ve played so far tackles with the basilik. An ancient creature; this being is said to be half rooster, half dragon. Just like a manticore; it is made of different body parts belonging to two up to four animals. Here, in this game, you must defeat two basiliks. As a cryptozoologist, you must put your knowledge at work in order to save the people of Serpent Hill.
