Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn

WARNING: Not For The Easily Offended

Lacking a “Saints of Rage” spinoff from Saints Row, Shaq Fu is the next best thing. It’s the Duke Nukem Forever of beat ‘em ups. By this, I mean a homage to the juvenile 90s: An Arcade game filled with all the crude humor that came with the decade.

This should be enough for you to either want to give this game a whirl in the name of nostalgia or shriek for torches and pitchforks.

Still here? Ok, then I can continue.

The game is a glorious self-aware parody with a ridiculous premise filled with hilarious banter, the kind that would result from a drunk Feng Shui game in the dead of the night. They took the worst game of the 16bit era and turned it into the best self-parody of the year. The voice acting is decent and sufficient to convey the comedy, but the real gold is Shaquille, who takes the ridiculous premise and runs with it, doing his part with gusto and making the experience into something memorable. I’m a fan now.

I backed this game in 2014 on Indiegogo and they promised many features that did not make it to the final game, such as local and online multiplayer and more than one playable character. They also failed to deliver on the promise that this was going to be an actual fighting game instead of a beat ‘em up, so they sold us the game under false pretenses. So far, all that has materialized is some mundane Barack Obama DLC campaign which isn’t even viewable on Steam.

Regarding the game, it’s a functional but very repetitive single player beat ‘em up, akin to Streets of Rage, but not as fun. The combat works okay for what it is but the game runs out of ideas very quickly and the levels just become tedious to get through before long. You’ll know when you’ve seen all the enemies the game has to offer once you’re running through a ridiculously long gauntlet of the exact same enemies in the final level.

THE QUIET MAN™

THE QUIET MAN™

I honestly didn’t think there would be a game that I’d hate more than Crying is not Enough , but The Quiet Man did it. It broke me. It broke me as a gamer and as a human being. I just…I can’t even understand how a game this bad got made. Who greenlit this? How did thousands of dollars get poured into something so incredibly insulting to deaf people and gamers alike? Almost every single design decision that went into this absolute dumpster fire of a brawler was BAD. There’s absolutely nothing redeeming about any of it. ANY OF IT!!

I get what they were trying to do but it’s… not quite there.

The game is essentially a late night B-movie with some playable scenes. Then they want you to experience the feeling of being deaf while this goes on because the main character is deaf. The thing is: these two things aren’t mixed very well. First off, the main character (Dane) seems capable of communicating, so he can at least hear a little or read lips. In fact, he even speaks and the other characters understand him. Several times already I watched him have a back and forth dialogue. However, we are not given subtitles even during these scenes. Everyone that knows him talks to him casually and he seems to be picking it all up, so we’re not experiencing the world through him… he’s doing a much better job than we are. Also, there are cut scenes we are given to watch without Dane around, so why can’t we even hear those? So it’s not so much experiencing a deaf main character but more so that we as the observing audience are deaf and trying to watch a movie not intended for deaf people. If such was actually the case, we’d do what I imagine any deaf person watching a movie would do… turn the subtitles on. I tried to do this and was even prompted at the beginning that they would provide subtitles when necessary, but I haven’t seen a single one since the first guy ranting in the first scene and no combination of making little neon signs light up in the settings menu has changed that. So apparently the only dialogue I needed to hear was some lowlife describing how a non-story female was once catcalled.

On the whole, it’s not a bad game. Good combat system, there are four main characters to play as. The presence of bosses is nice. And the cherry on the cake is a very rich storyline, with side quests that depend on your choice. Recommended for purchase !

Cool game in which you need to fight drunks, complete tasks and complete the story. The game has many locations, skill leveling of the character and many different chips.

A very decent game for a sane price. Recommend.

Had a great time playing this with friends.

The controller support is really rough around the edges though and it’s difficult getting different controllers to work.

This game is not OK, it is bad. All sounds in game (music, jumps, sound of your death) are very annoing (but not gachi sounds of course). 1/2 of levels are VERY boring. Bosses are very boring, too. The last level had made so bad, that I deleted game. This game is not rofl-able, it is too good for that (but it is too bad to play it serios). I don’t want to play this game for free, and paying even 300$ hm hm… 1,5$ for it is silly

Guacamelee! Gold Edition

Guacamelee! Gold Edition

This game is a love song to Super Metroid played by a nerdy mariachi band.

Instead of an arm cannon, you use your fists. Instead of a morph ball, you turn into a chicken. Instead of color-coded doors to be opened with the appropriate weapon, there are colored blocks to be smashed with your varied slam attacks. You even gain your powers by destroying precious Chozo statues (more on that later.)

The best part of this game, hands down, is the combat. The multitude of useful attacks at your disposal, combined with the responsive dodging mechanic and the fun and powerful grapples means that the combo system is both useful and rewarding. Battles in this game just resonate with me as being really fun, as you can bash some skeletons around, throw them into other skeletons, and just keep it going as the numbers on your screen go up and up and you get a bigger money reward when the fight is finished. It’s just really fun, and the enemies are well designed to let you take advantage of combos and such if you’re good.

-Quick Review-

Guacamelee! Gold Edition is an action, adventure, 2D, indie platformer that has strong Spanish/Mexican themes. Not only that, but there are hilarious cross-game-references. The game play is fun, fast paced, and dynamic. I greatly enjoyed this game, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys indie adventure-type games.

-Detailed breakdown review-

Story: You are Juan, you are trying to save el presidente’s daughter (whom everyone tells you that you’ve had a crush on since you were little. Everyone knows but me?) The villain Calaca has taken her and Juan must master his powers as a Lunchador to save not only el presidente’s daughter, but to also save both the world of the living and the dead.

  • Old-school Beat ‘em up brawler as the core mechanic. You can learn a new move by smacking each enemy type accordingly.

  • Silly and funny Traps: Baked fish missile, Toothpaste turret, Watermelon bazooka… and much more! Over 15 types of gadgets are ready to be unlocked by you!

  • Break neighbors’ houses to collect resources. Use them to set traps or build a new room.

  • You can have Susumu make power-up items for you. But be careful! When he’s goofing off, give him some loving punishment.

  • Young jobless guy who is avoiding social interactions and shutting himself inside his room all day.

  • In Japan, people like him are called Hikikomori(shut-in), which has become a big social problem.

  • Enemies are trying to reach out to Susumu because they are worried about him, or want to mock him, or just to see him in the wild…

  • When enemies reach Susumu, the game is over. I cannot explain what exactly will happen there, but I can relate to Susumu so badly because I’m also a Hikikomori. I’m making this game solo just trying to reflect my own situation with this game…

Super Friends Party

Super Friends Party

Super friends party is, simply put, a modern masterpiece. The game explores themes such as mental disabilities in the form of the minigames. Each game represents a certain theme. For, example, Mexico Simulator, takes a deep and realistic dive into what the country of Mexico is really like. The first person shooters are art forms in themselves. Playing these minigames helped me not only explore the game, but helped me develop special skills that I use to this day. This game isn’t just a game, but an experience. The only downside is that once you play it, there is nothing on this Earth that is better, Super Friends Party is the absolute peak of human creation.

Real player with 3.4 hrs in game

This game is incredibly well-made. Firstly, the character design is absolutely amazing, because of the variety in shapes and sizes the characters have, representing all members of society. This masterpiece also features some of the most creative mini-games I’ve ever seen. The graphics are absolutely breathtaking, they are superior to all other games out right now. Lastly, the soundtrack of this game is incredibly diverse and features a wide variety of songs, whenever I hear this music I’ll recognize it for sure, just like the music in Minecraft. The maps in the games are freakishly realistic. For example, I was playing “Castle Shootup” and it felt like I was in an actual castle shooting people. Don’t have any friends to play with? Well this game features some of the most masterfully made bots in any game I’ve ever played. The bots are very human-like, and you can actually become friends with them. They talk to you, and are extremely kind and funny.
