Cat’s Cradle

Cat’s Cradle

“Cat’s Cradle” is splendid. The movement is fluid, the levels and bosses are moderately challenging, the soundtrack fits the stylistics, and the visuals are simple, but gorgeous.

It’s sort of like Streets of Rage, I think. Never played that game, but I’m familiar with it’s type: a sort of 2.5D brawler where you shuffle along a mostly 2D plane, but can slowly shift axis. Your attacks mostly only hit along the same axis, though there’s some wiggle room, thankfully. Animations are good, mostly, but combat can start to feel pretty tedious at times, especially since you can’t run from encounters at all, so if you’re struggling to beat a mid-boss, as I was, you have to fight every enemy leading up to them over and over again. Get’s pretty grating. Furthermore, because a lot of evasion depends on positioning, and the basic movement is really slow, it can get quite hard to evade when there are a lot of enemies on screen. You have a spear twirl that can clear out people right next to you, but if it doesn’t connect, you’re basically certain to get counter-attacked in the brief window you’re locked in after the spin. And if you get knocked down with enemies nearby, you’d be better off just laying there because you’re likely to get utterly crushed the second you stand before given any chance to defend yourself. Just a bit of a grind. Not the worst game, but not really something I can get into.

A lot like the good old Castlevania games with difficult platforming and all. If you get good with the shmoovement you can pretty much fly across levels and the combat is a lot of fun.

My main complaint is how slowly Rayne turns around. I can’t tell you how many times I try to turn around and shoot only for the turning animation to be canceled and shoot off screen. PLEASE devs reduce time to turn around by half and combat would feel great. Also adding the Japanese main menu art as an option would really put a chef’s kiss on the entire package.

They Bleed Pixels - Satisfaction that comes at a price

If you check on Steam it actually comes at pretty low price. But obviously I was not talking about money. I was talking about time (which equals money) but let talk more about why I came to such a conclusion.

So if you have read my previous review you probably guessed that I like this game because it is a 2D platformer. And yes I like platformers and I was collecting them in the past when I had time to play any games. Naturally I came across this game and loved it at first sight. And why not? I watched the trailer and I saw fast paced action, lots of different moves and attacks. I loved this simplistic but beautiful art style. It also said it was inspired H.P Lovecraft which told me absolutely nothing at first but after searching online I know all I needed. Another thing that got me really excited was the number of achievements to unlock. And my friends know that I’m a achievement-junkie. But I should have read what those achievements are about. From the tags I new it wasn’t going to be easy and I was quite ready for that. So I grabbed my controller, fired up the game and focused on my TV screen…

They Bleed Pixels is a challenging wall jump platformer, with a satisfying unique premise, quality combat and engaging mechanics.

You control a presumably troubled student at the Lafcadio Academy for troubled girls. She stumbles across a magical book that makes you have wild dreams involving a few strangely horrific creatures, several bloody spikes, and an ever present number of saws. The book also has glowing bits and pages that not only are missing, but found inside said dreams. Take heed of any such events that occur in reality, as these are not normal behaviors for books or their pages.

Skautfold: Into the Fray

Skautfold: Into the Fray

Skautfold has been a series of slightly rough gems, and Into the Fray is no exception.

I really do feel the need to emphasis how much I love the world and story Steve Gal has been developing. It has expanded game by game from one mansion besieged by the eldritch Fog to a world under threat of being overwhelmed, without losing its focus on an interesting core cast of characters. That is a difficult feat, and one worthy of commending.

As is developing games in such a variety of genres and having them all turn out at least good. First a fairly straightforward 2D action game, then an action-platformer with Metroidvania elements, and now this - a top-down shooter with the bullet-spamming, circle-strafing energy of a 90s first-person shooter.

Brutal Legend

Brutal Legend

My rating: 7+/10

Based on: one 100% complete SP campaign on Brütal difficulty + MP boosting with a partner and solo grinding

Check out my other reviews

TL;DR: An homage to heavy metal and a peculiar, if mediocre blend of a 3rd person hack-and-slash with a sandbox world and RTS-lite mechanics. Excelling in art direction and soundtrack, but bogged down by the gameplay design choices and console controls, it can make you hum, finger drum and fist pump in a mosh-pit-like excitement or bang your head in gloomy frustration. Fun enough to play on your own, but the MP is pretty much dead without friends. Brutal, perhaps, metal, definitely, but not enough to rock my world.

Brütal Legend, a game about Jack Black being Jack Black in a fantasy world full of metal. Metal as in, the musical genre, and the element as well (since there are many metal-based things on this world!). Now, for a more serious introduction, Brütal Legend is an action-adventure game (of the hack and slash variety) mixed in with some slight RTS elements. While at first it might seem like an odd combination, actually makes a pretty entertaining game.

The story follows Eddie Riggs, a roadie for a metal band who, after a terrible accident, gets transported to a fantasy world inspired by heavy metal, with fantastic creatures, and an evil overlord attempting to dominate it. Along the way, Eddie discovers not only that he gets awesome powers through music, but meets up with many interesting characters, some of them based on real-life heavy metal legends (and even voiced by them). Even though I wouldn’t call metal one of my favourite genres, this game certainly manages to create an amazing world from it (and it actually made me enjoy metal a lot more!). Anyway, the main goal is to put a stop to Lord Doviculus' plans, who wishes to enslave humanity and dominate the world.
