Noitu Love 2: Devolution

Noitu Love 2: Devolution

Noitu Love 2: Devolution is an absolutely smashing (pun-intended) hidden action/indie gem. It features some fantastic mouse controlled gameplay with tons of robots to smash up and plenty of firepower to do so. To be blunt, every single bit of this game is absolutely fabulous…. the boss battles are challenging but fair, the pixel-art style is gorgeous, the level design is awesome, and the music… is great!

Really, what better could you possibly ask for out of a $5 game? Granted, it’s not all that long with the base story, but I found myself completing the game many times with the variety of unlockable characters available to you and the multiple difficulty settings. Too easy? That’s okay, the game is more than happy to crank up the difficulty for you… no matter how experienced you are, there’s always something fun and challenging for you here. Beat your previous score on the levels, shoot for an A ranking, or even just something as self-imposed as trying to go through the game without taking any damage.

A short, yet powerful little game. It keeps you interested during its entire duration. Things never get boring, since you are constantly getting new content during the entire game. There is no grind, no padding, just action. Not to say that the game doesn’t tone it down a little once in a while, it masterfully keeps the interest curve well balanced. You won’t get fatigued by too much action too long, yet at the same time there is no risk of getting bored. Some parts may be simple traversal, but even then you are assaulted by enemies just often enough not to feel safe.

Plasma Puncher

It had everything to be a great game but unfortunately CHEAPNESS destroys this game

So much annoying, bad or just unfun stuff:

 • horrible hitboxes

 • enemies spawning INSTANTLY inside you and hitting you while invulnerable

 • 2 enemies spawning instantly in your surrounding and blocking your character

 • lack of sound queues (bomby spawned in the middle of a pack? guess you’re dead)

 • lack of clear mechanics (what the fuck is that ovni mini boss)

 • some enemies are just frustrating to deal with, specially those with invulnerability and the ability to damage you at the same time

Zeno Clash

Zeno Clash

xeno- prefix. from Ancient Greek ξένος (ksénos, “alien”) a. Having to do with foreigners, as in xenophilia, or more commonly, xenophobia. b. From a foreign place, as in xenolith.

clash noun. onomatopoeic a. A skirmish, a hostile encounter. b. Opposition, contradiction, such as between differing or contending interests, views, purposes etc.

In my imagination, the development of Xeno– sorry, Zeno Clash – started when folks at Ace Team got together, got high, and got onto the subject of ancient mythologies (Roman, Greek, Norse, etc.) and how weird they all were. I mean, if you want crazy characters and crazier stories, you need look no further than some of the gods and goddesses traipsing around back in the day. Athena, birthed fully formed out of the sweaty forehead of Zeus; Pan, the goat-god of wanton sex; Artemis, goddess of the hunt, who for some reason was depicted in various interpretations as being literally covered with breasts; Medusa, she of the stylish snake perm and stony gaze, being some kind of metaphor for psychosexual wackiness (I’m pretty sure we can blame Freud for that); Jeff, the God of Biscuits; and even some nutter who told people to eat some bread and drink some wine and pretend it was his flesh and his blood… I mean, ew, dude. I’m sure we have enough problems without adding cannibalism to it. So anyway, the developers were shooting the breeze about Gods and Golden Fleece and rivers of blood and whatever until one guy, as I imagine it, stood up and went, “Yeah… but like, what if… Dude! What if there were, like, aliens, right? And they were weird, like totally, heh, but then, like, THEY also had myths and shit! I mean… dude…”

Over the years I occasionally return to this game to replay it for a bit (or sometimes, in its entirety), on one hand because the gameplay is genuinely fun, and on the other, because the world design slaps hard.

Running on the Source Engine, it runs buttery smooth and doesn’t need any sort of config editing or patching to make it support high refresh rates and high resolutions.

Saying this, you might expect some big budget title with huge production quality, but the reality is that it’s still very much a small indie game. The voice acting ranges from charmingly hammed up to okay to “literally random person we sat into the studio”, because that’s essentially what they did. No seriously, check the voice credits, most of it is just the development team and everyone is doing double or triple-duty. The character with probably the most lines, the protagonist, thankfully is voiced by a professional voice over guy.

Intrepid Izzy

Intrepid Izzy

Intrepid Izzy is a great game that has the old school charm with new age design, graphics, and personality. This game reminds me of the “New Super Mario” games on Wii or Switch. There is that nostalgic feeling while playing these games but also a fresh and relevant game play for 2020.

Playing Intrepid Izzy, you have the freedom to move around and re-enter stages. This is part of the games charm, as you acquire new suites while going to different levels. These suites give Izzy powers, such as fly/glide or climbing walls. As Izzy progresses through the game, she can go back to previous stages to find additional key items.

This is a case study on how important sounddesign is in a game. Visually the game is top notch but then you have 15 sec looping music and bad stock sound effects that really distract from the experience.

I do recommend the game but only with the music turned off.

Dust: An Elysian Tail

Dust: An Elysian Tail

Imagine if Disney joined forces with Rankin/Bass (producers of 1977’s The Hobbit , 1982’s The Last Unicorn and various cartoons like ThunderCats and SilverHawks ) and made a beat ‘em up RPG. Now imagine that instead of all that, one guy made a game that pretty much equals what you’d get otherwise. He didn’t have the relentless marketing or the massive capital of Disney, etc., yet he still sold 1 mil plus copies of Dust, and why? ‘Cause it ain’t bad, ain’t bad at all.

A furry artist learns that hand-drawing an animated movie is really hard, so he switches gears and makes a game instead. The result became one of the original poster children for indie gaming!

Dust: An Elysian Tail is a hack-and-slash Metroidvania with a few RPG elements. You play as Dust, a furry Samurai who wakes up with amnesia and is promptly ambushed by a talking sword named Ahrah and a flying rodent named Fidget (who, while slightly cuter than Navi, is roughly just as annoying). What follows is a 10-hour saga of Dust constantly being emo about not knowing who he is, taking occasional breaks to bicker with Fidget, and stopping to run sidequests for NPCs. Through it all, his talking sword urges him to keep moving forward – while annoyingly not telling him what kind of a quest he’s on, and forcing him to make his own judgements about all the moral dilemmas he encounters. The story has something to do with a war between the furry “warmbloods” and scaley “moonbloods”. Now, I must give the game some credit: I did not see where this story was going until near the very end! Dust’s character concept is pretty awesome and unexpected, and the game will keep you guessing about his true nature until it’s ready to show you.

Remember Me

Remember Me

The year is 2084. The location is in Neo-Paris, France in a cyberpunk world. You can see the Eiffel Tower and other landmarks in the distance, but you can interact with them or enter them. This is the setting for Remember Me, an original game that illustrates how technological advances can harm people.

You play Nilin, a memory hunter with amnesia. You are sent by a revolutionary group to take down a corporation, Memorize, that can sell, trade, or erase memories. In this dystopian world you get a Euro feel when walking by open-air cafés and when distinctly colored robots are standing near you. You are trying to recover whatever memories Nilin has lost from one episode to the next. The world looks beautiful, but there is strong evidence of significant poverty and the oppressor having significant power over the oppressed.

I do recommend this game, but not for everybody, and perhaps not even for most people. Read further through the review to see if you might find it worthwhile or not.

First, the story and enviornment, since this is really the interesting part of the game.

Part of the dystopian premise here is standard fare: environmental problems push a vast portion of the world’s population into squalor, with the instability spreading to the first world, leading to civil unrest, war, and eventually a civil war that fractures Europe. The interesting science-fiction twist is a technology that allows people to extract, move and share memories. The game doesn’t look in to this in the kind of depth a good science fiction novel would, but rather uses this mainly as a structure to support the plot. While the writing and acting has quite a few awkward moments, the overall story certainly avoids being a straight “good vs. evil” tale, instead being considerably more interesting. As Nilin, part of a plot to bring down an ostensibly evil corporation taking over the world, you’ll find that things swiftly become uncomfortably unclear. Your very first memory remix involves bringing someone over to your side by convincing her that the corporation killed her husband, which I doubt anybody with a conscience could feel comfortable with if they take the story even moderately seriously. As you proceed, you’ll find yourself wondering on a regular basis who the good guys really are, or even if there are any. While there are a few characters who fit into the “evil villain” mold, all the rest have plausible reasons for what they do, and nobody comes out purely good or bad. This gives the story a pleasing depth that most games don’t have, and does a lot to make up for failings in the gaming elements.

it’s good, legit i bought it because i thought the developer put a bunch of time into the game to make it look good, but then when i bought it, it was great and when i beat the game 100% (just now) i wanted a second one but there isn’t so i was kinda disappointing, but if they ever make a second one i’d get it happily which i want them to do.

Hey there! If you enjoy short and sweet reviews, follow my curator page here! I am an independent Curator providing reviews and insights to the games that need the spotlight! Thank you! :)

I got the chance to play Street Hero back when it was introduced as a demo for the Steam Game Festival and I thought it showed tremendous promise. Especially if you consider that this is the first game released by DD Games , a Game Studio from Vietnam managed by one authentic Hero! A one man band!
