Breakneck City

Breakneck City

One of the reasons I love Steam is I keep finding games I didn’t know I need. I feel that developers loved the Dynamite Deka series and wanted to create a similar game but in a Double Dragon mold. The gameplay handles well with a controller and the boss fights have real character. One sword wielding foe tosses one of his blades in air to free up his hand and spit a fireball across the screen. Small touches like this indicate a love for the genre.

A fantastic throwback to 3D beat ‘em ups, a genre that is woefully undeserved given that we mainly throwbacks to 2D beat ‘ems ups that are inspired by the likes of Final Fight or Streets of Rage rather than games following the Dynamite Deka or Spikeout lineage.

Combat is pretty simple, there’s no Devil May Cry style move list, but the fundamentally solid basic attacks and a great feeling dash combine with top notch level design, clever environmental interactions, dynamic enemy types make for a really fun time.

I spent two whole dollars on this and I would have rather set both dollar bills on fire and shoved them up my butthole than have played this game for a single minute. The scenery is generic and unchanging, the combat simplistic (you only have one move), the enemy AI makes no sense. And to top it all off,

! when you reach the final boss, you get a screen that says “you failed to get revenge and have died” and then the game ends. The audacity of the developer to charge any amount of money for this at all should be a crime.

Make monsters clash with each others to win. Cool arcade gameplay with horror aesthetics and 4 distinct campaign (game-modes). But sadly it’s gets old fast.

So you’ve read the description and now you’re down here in the comments trying to figure out what’s it all about. Click the video above to see some of the gameplay, mechanic and hear my thoughts on the game.

Appetite for Detestation is a 3D beat’em up set in the Victorian era where you get to play as the monster reeking havoc on the citizens in order to satiate your blood thirst. After reading that description I am sure you are, like I was, hype to jump into the game and get to slaying. Well, let’s talk about the positives of the game first. The music is probably the best part of the game. It’s eerie, inviting and sets the mood for a monster of the time. The environments are also well designed; plenty of destructive pieces and platforming to be had in each level.

this is just plain bad. at one point i managed to remove the absolutely brain dead AI from the ring, and nothing would get them to respawn short of restarting the entire game. Frequently your hits will damage you instead of the AI. As far as I can tell, your commands are limited to WASD movement and the key to engage your weapon. The game tells you to press ‘c’ to use your weapon, but it seems it’s actually ‘e’ but it doesn’t work all the time, so maybe that’s incorrect? ‘C’ does nothing. There’s no menu option to view key bindings so good luck with that. There are 3 total vehicles you can use, 1 of which (throwup bot?) doesn’t actually engage when you are under the opponent, rendering its only weapon useless. There is only one arena, and the hazards don’t actually damage you or the AI. Obviously, no multiplayer. No progression or customization. The game costs $13 and you’ll play it for 10 minutes. Avoid this game. My goodness, this was a bad one.

AKIBA’S TRIP: Hellbound & Debriefed

After a little over 80 hours, I’ve finally got the platinum badge. Now, I would like to mention that platinum isn’t the same as 100% I am not even close to getting 100%, there’s still so much clothes and weapons and nicknames and other stuff to collect. I just managed to get all of the Steam achievements, but that’s good enough for me! And now that I’ve gotten platinum, I figured I might as well write a review.

So as you already know, this game was originally released in 2011 for the PSP, and now in 2021 they decided to release a PC HD remake. Now, I’ve never played the original PSP game, but I am certain that they have made good improvements, and it’s also a very nice port.

Don’t ask for HIS measurements!

Onto a more serious review. I wish there was a neutral recommendation but, since there isn’t, I cannot recommend this game at full price.

To preface this review, I played the original version and the plus version on a psp years ago.

I love that Aquire has translated this game into English and ported it to pc. It makes it easier preserve such a great series.

However, if you are coming in from Undead & Undressed, you may be disappointed.

While it does say HD update, the graphics does not look great when it is up-scaled to 1080p and above. Also, the voice recordings sound compressed. This is to be expected when you port a psp game to pc.

So far it’s been extremely fun, who knew punching sheep would be so weirdly cathartic?

Sound design is funny, I especially like the music that plays during the level.

very amazing game with lots of epic content!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Real player with 0.7 hrs in game

Bad game, ai jump on you but don’t attack. Combat is very bad, movement also the same. No story or purpose, what are you supposed to be doing in this game? “Chimes PvP is dynamic, if you want to fight hand to hand go for it! Or do you want to do tricks like bashing the enemy into something, pulling out your sword and shoving the enemy into the great abyss.” Hand to hand is litterally the characters waving their arms, the swords are the same thing. Fixes the game needs: Better AI, no taking damage when running, better fighting and more purpose to keep players playing and doing things, especially single player.

Really fun and challenging mini-game using some of the Epic Games Paragon Assets I’m familiar with - the bosses in levels 2 and 3 were particularly enjoyable to navigate around.

Destroy the city as a P.O’d elephant?

Didn’t know I needed this, but I sure as heck did.

The games store page already sums up the gameplay quite well: 3min to score 300 points, people give 1pt while cars give 10. Level 2 and 3 have indestructible enemies to avoid while making your carnage quota.

The game isn’t overly difficult,I won with several retries in about half an hour.

Once you figure out where the cars are, it gets a lot easier.

Stomping around while people run screaming is very satisfying, although a nitpick is your hitbox,it seems to be just your feet that destroy things, while your tusks do nothing.
