More faithful than the modern XCOM games. You can build multiple bases to your own style and needs! Multiple drop ships, not a single one and an anthill for you to save the world with. Troops are expendable like they should be! Yay!

Eagerly awaiting the sequel, and hopefully eventual Terror From the Deep spiritual successor.

Only thing letting it down is lack of final polish - quicksave works, quickload doesn’t for some reason, and there’s a few minor glitches like the camera being stuck panning in a direction after an alien turn which requires a quick reload to fix, etc. Sometimes the AI acts a little omnipotent, such as sitting in a corner in a building never moving until the moment you get close enough for it to take a fair shot at your soldiers and then dip back into cover again, even though it shouldn’t have known you were there.

Good: Mostly faithful recreation of XCOM UFO Defense but with significantly better controls and a cool Cold War setting. No class restrictions like Firaxis XCOM and fewer restrictions in general. You make your own classes. Four gun and explosive tiers.

Nice, detailed lore with the Xenopaedia. Great music overall. Overall good weapon design, with humans getting their own distinctly designed plasma weapons. Sound effects are fantastic, especially for high level weapons and explosions. They even have different sounds for the weapon reloads.

I first found out about Dwarrows by watching YouTube Lets Plays before it was even released. I bought it as soon as it came out (payed full price) and, so far, I am enjoying it just as much as I thought I would. If you play games like My Time in Portia or Ni no Kuni II, then I believe you will love Dwarrows. So what do I like about the game?

I really enjoy the slightly simplistic styling of the game. It isn’t hyper realistic, but more of a cartoony (is that a word?) feeling, that adds it’s own charm to the game play.

Oh my. Dwarrows is a little masterpiece.

Here are some notes on happiness:

  • Visual: The wood elves reminded me of Sesame Street characters – a bit of Bert and Ernie and Grover.

  • Audio: Enjoyable. :) I liked to run into a group of bluebirds just to hear them tweeting as they scattered. I liked the piped-in suspenseful mini-melodies when I was trying to solve a puzzle.

  • Travel: This game handled fast travel really well. Having three characters to port around could have been a hassle, but instead so many workarounds were provided: teleport scrolls in inventory (with options to transport one character or all three), teleport fountains at puzzles (to bring all three to help), and teleport stone rings (for one or three). Plus it was nice to have the three characters spread around the map sometimes – I often left Gloia in town to build, while the other two ran around to explore. Really well done.

Been a year that I last wrote something about this game, and considering that the updates for the game come frequently, I think it’s time to update the review as well.

Last year I called it “playable”. This year I can actually call it entertaining. What’s most entertaining, at least for me, is that the colonists are actually very human. Allow me to explain.

In most games, you have people that feel more like worker drones. They will go from place to place, build, mine, craft, sleep, get hurt, go to the medic bay, build, mine, craft… The “people” here feel actually like people. And they don’t want to be treated like worker drones. They get stressed out if all they do is build and work.

The inspirations for this game are both obvious and subtle, influencing how it looks, feels and plays, or rather how you think you should be playing it.

It swings from a low pace base builder with an enormously detailed simulation behind every little thing you see and can interact with to a frantic struggle for survival as the dangers of Maia strike the unprepared mercilessly. Prepare to be unprepared and learn by failing.
