Riff Racer - Race Your Music!

Riff Racer - Race Your Music!

Riff Racer, previously called Drive Any Track, is basically Audiosurf without the match-3 puzzles. You load up a song from your hard drive, and the game generates a unique track for you to drive through, letting you compete for high scores with anyone else who’s played the same track.

The controls and presentation are simply sublime. Racing feels like F-Zero with its high speeds and crazy jumps; you really have to pay attention to the shape of the upcoming track if you don’t want to wipe out. The smooth animation and futuristic visual style is wickedly awesome as well.

Riff Racer, what a game. To be honest, I did not expect it to be so good. This is one of those games that you put your music into and they generate a racing track, which fits the music. Even though it’s in Early Access, it does its job better than other game of the same genre.

Below the final verdict is the complete list of music that I’ve played for this review.

Pros:

  • Terrific surroundings (skyscrapers, spotlights, etc.)

  • It does a really good job at converting the music into the track you are driving on. The drops are amazing, boost pickups are synchronised with the beats and even landings fit the music!

An 80’s Love Letter That Just Falls Short

Don’t let my “Not Recommended” rating dissuade you - Neon Drive is the most intense, addicting, visually arresting rhythm game that I sadly cannot recommend outright to everyone. It’s at times like these that I wish I had a different option other than a simple “Yes/No” answer. This game is good - very good in fact - but it has problems that prevent it from being great. If you love rhythm games, challenging difficulties, or the 80’s aesthetic then you’ll probably love this game as much as I do. However, if not then don’t let this game be your introduction.

I had fun with this game but can’t recommend it due to issues that make the hard/insane difficulties far more difficult than they really need to be.

The plane level has a loop that basically doesn’t interact with the music at all, forcing you to just figure it out via trial and error.

The falling traffic section has cool music that doesn’t help you in any way. It’s just falling enough times to memorize a safe path through.

The Robot level has a series of hurdles that require the first jump made be well timed. There is no useful music for the first jump, in fact there’s a misleading series of notes that will get you killed if you use them. The following hurdles all have super useful notes to help, but this doesn’t matter if your first jumps timing is off, you’ll die on the later hurdles if it is. ((I guess it’s possible to ajdust your timing between hurdles, but that’s like, tasbot levels of reaction time. Not what rhythm games are about)) This problem exists on other levels, but it’s not as pronounced as it is in the robot level, due to its unique mechanics.

Crashday Redline Edition

Crashday Redline Edition

I’ve been reading the negative reviews. After over 1000 hours of playing Crashday, I can give you an honest review, and I will be either confirming, or busting some of the “weak points” mentioned in these negative comments.

“The cars feel like they are driving on ice.”

Not really, only if you take offroad wheels on tarmac, or sport wheels on dirt. If you want to see what driving on ice is like, there’s probably a mod for that.

“The camera is low and so close to the car that you can’t even see where you’re going”

A simple and fun game with good visuals, awesome soundtrack. Arcade style game all about topping your high score. A few cases of poorly translated English are mildly annoying.

If you click out of the game on the crash screen, and then click back in, you won’t be able to hit restart or menu, you have to exit out the game. But I love the game so far, I wish there were options to permanently enable certain bonuses and maluses, specifically pixelate.

Update: Also about half of my deaths come from stupid drivers or what I would consider unfair deaths. When a yellow car spawns right in front of me out of nowhere, not only is it hard to react that fast to it, but it’s also almost impossible even if you do react just based on the “slipperyness” of the car (which I do love that mechanic). The other is a little more questionable, the cars dont follow the road, if they come to a turn they don’t turn at all, so you have to be reminding yourself that when you are trying to make a sharper turn with AI around. Now I’m not sure whether the cars not following the road is intentional, or is just yet to be added, but if it is to be considered intentional, it doesn’t make sense why even on some straightaways, very rarely a car will be veering in one direction, often causing death of the player.

Mafia II (Classic)

Mafia II (Classic)

Mafia II is one of the best organized crime games, especially if we take realistic games with organized crime as the main theme. It’s also one of the best third-person shooter, and aged very well, even a decade later, it still feels as good as back in 2010.

Story

You play as sicilian immigrant, Vito Scaletta, whose family traveled to the USA looking for a better life, but reality turned out to be more grim and harsh than Vito’s parents imagined. Seeing how his father lives a miserable life and became a drunkard due to his hard job and poverty, Vito decided to not repeat his mistakes. His father eventually dies during the accident at the docks. He met Joe, a local bully and a cool guy, and eventually, due to lack of jobs and poverty, the two decided to become a small time criminals, thieves, essentially, during one such operation, Vito got caught, and between going to prison or helping USA with the invasion of Sicily, as a native italian speaker, he decided to go to war. And that’s only the beginning of his life path.

“I BECAME A CRIMINAL BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT TO BECOME A VICTIM”

Welcome to Empire Bay. Sunny place full of opportunities for those who can take them. Yes, I’m talking to you Vito & Joe. Yes, you too Mr. Vinci. I see you over there Alberto Clemente. Yeah, that’s right Carlo Falcone. I can keep on naming these fellas over and over again because this game was filled with gentlemen like these.

Vito Scalleta got tired of bureaucratic bullsh*t so he got shot right in the butt, that he could leave Europe and go straight back to Joe, so these two can put in the work, get up in the Mafia hierarchy, sky rocketing up in the mob family ladder so he can get what they all want - THAT GREEN THING.
