The Penguin IQ Test

The Penguin IQ Test

A roundabout 5-6 hour indie puzzle game at the moment. You need to figure out where to place your arrows to change the path of the penguin.

There are ~ 65 levels right now with some being explanatory when a new mechanic is introduced.

Maybe there should be in a few levels a limit of arrows to make it more difficult. I personally would prefer some kind of incentive to optimize your solutions - right now it doesn’t matter how fast/good your solution is as long as it solves the puzzle.

Now with added workshop items there is more content and you could create your own levels or play for example my created levels ;)

This is a brilliant and fun game. I have not quite finished it yet as of the time of this review but I’m pretty close so I’d say this game should take about 3 hours to complete in its current state. That gives £3.10/hour, which is reasonably good value. The best part is, however, that the game is not finished. I can definitively see the story stretching on much further than it does right now, which will be good. The art style is very simple and pixelated but I personally like this. The puzzles are mostly fun using some interesting game mechanics. However, a few of the forest levels seem a little odd and after a while the mechanics get a little boring. Therefore, I feel that introducing some new arrow types, perhaps playing with the speed or having a temporary arrow that can be used twice, would be nice. I’d also like to see some further use of the bridge.

A=B

Good programming game. The concept is very simple, but the problems are complex and challenging, and with all keywords “a=b” language is actually Turing-complete, so this is fun.

I haven’t played much of the game, but I’ve beaten chapters 1 and (almost) 2, and it seems quite fun. However, you should be aware that the game doesn’t strictly stick to having A=B be the only instruction - but so far the extra mechanics seem scaled back enough that it’s still true to the spirit of the idea.

Despite that, I’m enjoying my time with the game a lot. It encourages you to think outside the box and the restricted instruction sets make it very interesting to solve problems. I do wish the main menu was a bit more inviting (give some sort of indicator of where to click first perhaps?) as it does drop you in with little fanfare, but overall I’d say it’s a good purchase at the modest price tag it has right now. Very cool and fun concept :)

Malmyr

Malmyr

I stumbled across this recently, and have been enjoying working through the campaign. I give this a thumbs up primarily because of the enthusiastic and helpful developer responses to questions I had, and I feel I got my moneys worth of entertainment value. These guys deserve some more attention for their efforts. It is a game that I “like” but don’t “love”.

Malmyr offers some quite different mechanics to what you would normally expect, though not all of those are necessarily positive things (it is very mouse clicky) and can take some getting used to. Kind of revealing is the lack of a lets play series out there - people tend to bounce off it after a few hours I think. Fundamentally the game is more of a puzzler than a true building game - space is limited and the randomly generated tiles can require some planning before you commit to building. I am hoping to finish the campaign, I am always a sucker for trying to “finish” a game. I haven’t tried the sandbox mode though I may give that a quick shot once I knock off the last two missions, we shall see. I just have too many other games that are begging for my time and this just doesn’t have that magic X factor or depth of strategy tp keep coming back to.

Malmyr is THE game you’ve been waiting for a long time! What a pleasant surprise!

Malmyr is the perfect mix of real-time strategy and puzzle game. Because in Malmyr building your city is not made as easy as in other building games. Instead, you have to ensure an always sufficient flow of raw materials through increasingly complex road systems. but malmyr always remains clear, fair and, above all, relaxing. Relaxation is the perfect word to describe malmyr. You have no time pressure, you can correct mistakes at any time without losing your progress.

Bots Are Stupid

Bots Are Stupid

A 2D game where you try to maneuver robots through different platforming levels. It sets itself apart from conventional platformers by offering an alternative, more precise way of user input. Instead of directly controlling the character’s movement, the player has to write a set of simple instructions telling his robot what to do. The bot will then follow those instructions precisely and maybe (or maybe not) finish the level.

Beginner-friendly

The commands for the robots are designed to be as simple as possible in order to make the game accessible to anyone. This means that you are not required to have any prior programming/tech knowledge to be able to “program” the bots. The game might also have an educational value by introducing players to the very basics of scripting/programming in a playful way.

Features

  • 18 uniquely challenging Platformer Levels

  • Ultra-precise control by writing instructions

  • Grappling hook, Speed boosters, Conveyor belts

  • Level Editor + Level Sharing

  • Global Leaderboards of each level’s best scripts

  • Infinite supply of bots!

Meat & Greed is a 3D side scroller puzzle platformer game set in a slaughterhouse.

By controlling cows, chickens, and other animals, the player has the ability to manipulate the environment to solve puzzles, and eventually escape the place. Intense atmosphere of horror and visual narration will help to convey criticisms of the modern meat industry beyond a supermarket shelf.

All puzzle indie game lovers, as well as environmentally cautious players will appreciate both the moral goal and the refreshing approach to movement, switching between playable characters, and narrative design of the game.

You are a robot programmer whose objective is to reach the end of each level.

Each level will have logic problems for you to solve, and it’s up to you to build a path to the end of the level, with as few programming steps as possible.

Look for efficiency each level has an optional objective, in which you should take into account the fewest steps your schedule should have.

Bullet Shot

Bullet Shot

Bullet Shot is a game where you control bullets. When the enemy shoots, you can take control over the bullet, and rotate it to target your enemies. The goal is to strategically control the number of available pauses and degrees needed to control the bullets and kill your enemies as fast as possible.

Game mechanics

The ability to control bullets and time gives unprecedented gameplay. You don’t walk around the map or shoot enemies. The limited number of pauses and degrees gives quite a challenge.

Shopping Empire Tycoon

Shopping Empire Tycoon

Kinda nice shop simulation. It isn’t very deep, but it has nice mechanics increasing over the levels. I would at some parts put it into the idle genre, as it can take some time to get achievements for some levels and you need to wait a lot then. But overall I think I can recommend it.

Also the developer answers questions very fast and it looks like every now and then there are new levels and features added to the game.
