Homesick

Homesick

What is it?

Homesick is a narrative-style indie game that sits somewhere between The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Dear Esther (but with considerably more ‘game’ than the latter). Your objective is no more than to find out what happened, why you are there and how to escape by a small amount of puzzle-solving and decyphering of cryptic code to reveal what happened. Homesick is a short game and mostly entails you unlocking access to various areas that form one floor of an abandoned apartment block and eventually piecing together the story before finding your escape.

(Based on a review code I got from the developers.)

I have to say that this is one of the best games I’ve played in a long time: it’s definitely the best new game I’ve played this year. Playing it filled me with a vague sense of trepidation, but also an overwhelming need to explore and to find out where I was, why I was there and what my purpose was in that place, if I even had one. The puzzles rely on real world logic, so they’re quite straightforward and uncomplicated, and I didn’t wish they presented a bigger challenge, because to me, it doesn’t seem like Homesick is the kind of game that focuses on brain challenges: it’s all about exploration, and the puzzles (and their solutions) are just a way of helping you better explore the place around you. The way most of them leave a mark on the environment was amazing to witness: it feels so satisfying to solve something and watch its result bloom around you, an explosion of colour in a landscape almost entirely devoid of all colours that aren’t blinding white or washed out grey. The atmosphere in Homesick is exceptional, too, thanks largely to the soundtrack that impressed the pants off of me. It would be an entirely different game without it, which is easy to realise when you’re solving one of the puzzles that requires almost complete silence, and you realise how much you miss the music.

This puzzle game is so very impressive, I LOVE it! The puzzles are simple and hard at the same time. If you fail on a door, you will have to restart with a possible chance of the puzzle changing on you. So no path will be the same. The map is huge! So don’t expect to just go through just doors. Lots to explore and discover. The graphics are amazing for this type of game and I look forward to trying to solver every puzzle! A+

Why a space before a comma?

Don’t you just hate this random space before a comma? Why is it there? It’s really bugging me, I just want to squash it. The good news is that’s the only thing bugging me about this game. Lynn , The Girl Drawn On Puzzles is a beautiful and smart puzzle game that will challenge your ‘little gray cells’ while feasting your eyes and ears. It will also tell you a touching, poignant story about the mythical Nine-tailed Fox who dared to be human and a human girl who dared to set foot into this mythical realm.

Tetragon

Tetragon

Moderately complex puzzles, some had to wrestle with more than an hour. As is usually the case, then the thought comes “so that’s what you should have done” and everything seems obvious. The plot: more than a tick, as it develops throughout the game, rather than just setting a goal at the beginning. This is undoubtedly a plus for any puzzle game. Graphics: nice drawn graphics, angular in places, but overall fits the concept of the game. I love the combination of cool and warm colors, for which the developers a plus. Duration: The game took me about 5-6 hours, but I got stuck in one place for about 40 minutes. Results: good relaxing puzzle game with a story, I recommend it

Tetragon is a nice puzzle game you can play to relax. It is simple, yet satisfying. It is, however, a little too short. I started playing it with a controller, but later I realized playing with mouse and keyboard is much better (it even prevents some bugs). The game is challenging, but not in a way that will frustrate you. I definitely recommend this game if you like solving puzzles. I would give this game 8 out of 10.

The Long Gate

The Long Gate

The first thing you notice about this game is the grandeur and mystery of its environment, and it doesn’t ever let up; as I moved through the different sections of the game I marveled at the design of the machinery and rooms. The soundtrack provides an excellent backdrop to levels that are variously organic, mechanical, dark, and alien. The puzzles themselves are unlike anything I’ve seen in a game before. Built on the simple (and very much real) principles of electricity, the puzzles quickly take you from clicking on/off switches to troubleshooting gigantic electromechanical computers. Sometimes the goal is clear, other times not so much. This forced me to experiment and learn the principles before I could really solve anything complicated. The learning curve steps up quite a bit at some points, but not unreasonably so. A very satisfying challenge with plenty of those “oh I get it now” dopamine hits. Highly recommended.

Ok, so I’ve just finished the game for the first time (replaying soon because I still need that sweet, sweet 100% engineer mode achievement!) but I wanted to get my immediate feedback at 14.4hrs in onto paper :P

Firstly, a bit of my background. I’m a researcher in Computational Chemistry, and have a keen interest in quantum computing and electronics. I mention this as I think I’m not your typical audience, as not every gamer will have my experience with these kinds of things.

Onto the review! Spoilers abound from here on out so don’t read on if you care about those!

The Sojourn

The Sojourn

Although I enjoy a mental challenge, The Soujourn has finally worn me out. Gameplay can be summarized as ‘solve puzzle’ and then ‘move to next puzzle.’ Although the scenery is lovely and the sound track enjoyable, the repetitive nature of the challenges is exhausting. This is compounded by the fact that there is no reward for solving a puzzle. Instead, you just move along to the next one.

The story begins with following beings of light into an environment that unfolds before you. At first, it is delightful and I had a real sense of discovery and wonder. Each area has an average of 5 puzzles. 5 ‘scroll challenges’ are added to these as you enter the second phase. From this point, each area then has around 10 puzzles. Multiply this by numerous areas and the number of conundrums is a bit daunting.

The Sojourn, a high quality puzzle game with some interesting and well made mechanics that just feels off somehow.

The positive:

I love the mechanics, the dark world, the introduction of new elements is very fair and slow to get you used to it before hitting you with harder stuff. There’s about 5 core ones and all are original, any more than the amount they have would be too much for my mind to handle.

The ability to cheese puzzles is great in this, and both a blessing and a curse. Because the mechanics are not as “solid” as other games, you get a chance to pull some stuff the developer did not intend to solve the puzzle. How often this happened I’m not sure, but some puzzles I definitely felt that I had skipped some things via this. I do not want to call them glitches since they are so uncommon and they do fall within the rules of the game, but they are common enough to break the monotony of the levels. There’s a lot of places you can just barely squeeze some of the visual based mechanics through, some of it is intentional, some definitely isn’t but it feels fair. This reminds me of the Talos Principle in that way, and it’s definitely a good thing. The only real complaint about this is that during the first time playing, it could lead you to believe that some of the objects are red herrings, how many or if any actually are, I still don’t know.

Game Of Puzzles: Slavic Mythology

Game Of Puzzles: Slavic Mythology

A very easy, relaxing game with beautiful artwork. The main draw for me was its educational jumping off point to look into the folklore creatures more thoroughly elsewhere. The game play is a simple jigsaw puzzle block mover, and I got through it all in less than an hour on my first play through. I’ve gone back to it a few times when I’ve been stressed and just wanted a pretty game where I had no possible way of failing.

I think the game would be good for kids.
