Syrian Warfare

Syrian Warfare

«What kind of Arab would I be if I didn’t have a RPG buried in my yard…?»

  • Random guy in first mission after being asked to help defending the village

Wheew, what a ride. Definitely my personal surprise RTS of 2017 so far!

Syrian Warfare is a classic Real Time Strategy game brought to you by tiny Russian developer Cats Who Play. Since some members of the team also worked at GFI before, you could say the game is an unofficial sequel or spin-off to the 2008 RTS Warfare. Judging from videos or screenshots (and even the title font) the similarity is evident.

Syrian Warfare is a modern-day real-time tactics game with some excellent core gameplay, a surprisingly well-made campaign and complex, detailed mechanics that will be familiar to those who have played Men of War, another Russian-developed strategy game series, albiet with a significantly more user-friendly interface.

–——-

I had heard of the game last year but didn’t purchase it until now. I had recently been playing the Modern Combat mod for Company of Heroes which got me going back to playing some older modern day RTS/RTT games. I replayed a bit of World in Conflict (which was still as good as I remembered it.) but couldn’t quite maintain my interest in Act of Aggression. Given my experience with the latter I felt that I wouldn’t have much luck going back to the Wargame series since I had never been able to maintain interest in any of the series.

I played through the campaign of this game twice before owning it on Steam, hence my hours in game

This game is 100% worth the price for WWII buffs and plane fans, don’t expect a sim like the I-L2 series however, but if you just want a fast paced arcade game with a goofy American commander cheering you on and making lame one liners….this is the game for you.

I always like seeing the Pacific Front in World War II games, the Midway story is one of my favourites to follow so this game was a treat

I like it so far (I´m at mission 7), missions are challenging enough. I´ve flown a fighter, flying boat, and manned an anti-aircraft gun on a carrier. (oh, and a gun on a bomber)

You can change the view, FPS or TPS. And you have to keep sharp on the objective. If you start shooting only fighters instead of the bombers in a defensive mission, you will fail.

The only thing I don´t like is the soundtrack. It´s always the same lame song over and over. In a genre (WWII) that´s full of epic music all over (if you ever played any Medal of Honor game on a PS1, you know what I´m talking about). Also, the voice over of the narrator is bad as well. The intonation / acting is super over the top. And they should have put a radio sound effect filter on the voice. Nevertheless, I´m having fun with this game.

So I left this review simmering for far too long - and I have been admittedly fraudulent in not giving an update. However, I will say that I’m glad I waited as long as I did, because there is literally not enough good things to say. Am I writing a review for a completed game? Absolutely not. However, I’m reviewing a game that at its current state is 100% playable and enjoyable.

I’ll begin by correcting the claims from my prior review - the economy is now stable and effective, the gameplay is devoid of all major bugs, with the minor ones being easily self correctable with no negative impact to the progression. For an assembly style game, the aesthetic feels great, the engine is not taxing on the computer, and the overall assembly process feels great with plenty of room for individual optimization and creativity.

As much as I’ve played this game, after all said and done, I just wish it had more content to keep you invested, but it is in Alpha and this is one to keep an eye on if you like this style of game as the developers release patches and content consistently. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game for the first 20 hours or so but it became extremely repetitive once you optimized certain production lines and did all the research possible.

The bones of this are good, the graphics are great, and there’s something extremely satisfying about tweaking a manufacturing line until it’s optimized, then further adding other producting lines and having certain machines do the work of both lines so you can eliminate waste (i.e, having 2 lines use the same sewer/zipper, etc.

Well soldier, seems like you’re that guy. You drew the short straw and now you are to be stationed in the Abtos Covert outpost, a place commonly known for being quiet. But the moment it actually happens, the rest of the platoon is whispering: “Haven’t you heard the stories?”, “…heard someone disappeared there…".The stories about that place are innumerable. Human sacrifices, shadows running in the trees and souls still lost that sing a dreary song. When you ask your superior, he just laughs it off…

ANIME WAR — Modern Campaign

ANIME WAR — Modern Campaign

Anime war is a game that was very clearly made in a bit of a rush, with not much original content, yet with these things in mind, it manages to create much more gripping experience then many games do throughout hours of gameplay. It’s unique twist on a classic military shooter creates a much needed shake up in an overused, beaten to death genre.

Compared to most sniper focused games, the game is fast paced. It forgoes the many slow and meticulous aspects of your average long-range-barrelled-rifle-assassination game. This is signified succinctly by one mechanic, when you ADS (Aim-Down-Sights) you initially simply look over your characters shoulder, rather than scoping in; to scope in you must press the middle mouse button, and if you release the right mouse button and press it again it will go back to the shoulder view. This is an intellectually astounding way of explaining the gameplay speed to the player. Another thing that makes it so interesting to play is that, if you hammer the grenade button like a nail (a hammer is a tool used to impress nails (a pointy peace of metal used to attach two things such as wood or similar together) deep into something) then you will throw multiple a second, and there is an infinite supply of them. Some may call this a bug, but I say it is a masterful feature, which allows strategies of infinite complexity. Overall the gameplay is masterfully assembled, and it is clear Konichiwa games knows what they are doing.

Like stealth games? Try this.

–-

You play a vengeful spirit that’s been allowed to return. It plays out as an isometric puzzle game that requires a tactical approach. The only way you can fight is to possess the bodies of your enemies, but you have limited spirit energy to maintain either possession or a ghost form that lets you move through objects. If you get spotted in your fragile reanimated human body, you die quickly.

This was the first teaser demo and they’ve also released a longer demo with a few more missions (and additional story). The full game launches July 2021.

Feels awesome. Can’t wait to see more.

Perhaps more camera controls like (zooming/panning) wouldn’t hurt.

What I really hope to see in the final release is fast saves/load anytime and insanely hard levels.

Really great works folks!

The game is cool and bright, and it costs a little, about the graphics I want to say that it is a mixture of “counter strike” and “serious sem”. There is not enough multiplayer or at least a split screen. I hope they will add I will play with friends.

This game is just broken carbage.

It took 1000 of my blue gems because of the dumb air strike thing showing up randonly on screen and i clicked it on accident. The hell, all the work was for nothing…

And why do you have to be in game to regenerate energy at all. Or why do the receive 60 energy a day by certain hours give me a network failed error message, my internet is working. Was this on a server before and now its sold as being an offline game, but the online features are left in the game. Thats worth nothing if it doesnt work right.

IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN A NUTSHELL:

WHAT TO EXPECT: WW2 themed turn-based wargame. ‘Beer and pretzel’ play style. Attritional combat model. Chess-like battles. Unit class levelling and combat abilities. Tactical combat states. Tiny hex-grid maps. Good-looking combat models. No core force. Dynamically purchased order of battle. Some annoying bugs. GUI obfuscated game rules/mechanics. Incomplete scenario implementation. Active dev. Single-player only.

ACHIEVEMENTS: NONE.

Blitzkrieg Anthology

Blitzkrieg Anthology

I bought this game in 2003 just after it’s release, now in 2014 I find myself still playing it just as much. A few things to know about this game:

THERE ARE NO BASES - There is something awfully appealing about having a certain ammount of units and being told to capture an area without reinforcements.

The Campaign is fairly repetitive after a while. Essentially you will end up doing similar convoy missions, town clearing missions, defend the gun emplacement missions etc to get upgraded tanks and artillery.

Real player with 94.4 hrs in game

Bottomline:

Probably the best real time tactics ww2 game ibe ever played, certainly the best in the blitzkrieg series imo.

There is no base building, resource gathering, increasing production, or managing whole wars & armies here. Just good old military tactics.

I played this game for 100s of hours years ago, and even though i have my original disk (somewhere) i bought it again on steam.

Graphics are a little dated of course, but still looks good enough. The best part of this game is its gameplay, not its looks so if what you are looking for is flashy shinny explosions, there are better options out there. But if youre after a challenging, realistic and extremely fun gameplay, with complete historical accuracy, this is certainly what you are looking for.
