Waltz of the Wizard: Natural Magic

Waltz of the Wizard: Natural Magic

This is, by far, my favorite VR game- and I have a LOT of VR games- so this review is going to be long, but I feel like, even though this game is popular, it still isn’t getting the praise it deserves.

The VR market is, in my opinion, oversaturated with zombie shooters and fighting games. There are a few RPGs, but they don’t really let you do anything off the path they set out for you. They’re like rail shooters in an RPG format. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed games like Mage’s Tale and Asgard’s Wrath, but they lacked the thing I look forward to most in VR, free will. It blows my mind how lacking the VR market is in games where you can just do whatever the hell you want, it’s the perfect platform for experiencing life in fantastic ways. For this reason, I see Waltz of the Wizard as VR’s golden child. It may be “short” as far as having a to-do list, but no other game I’ve played has been so immersive. I get to be me, but me as a wizard, doing whatever I want to do, exploring and discovering without worrying about anyone trying to keep me tied to a story line where I’m only allowed to discover things when they say I can.

This game is mostly just a tech demo, and there is a free version out there you can play with instead. This one is very cheap, and it is the tech demo that sold my family on VR. My dad said “Its fun, 400$ Well spent son.”

We named the skull Bob, I don’t know his real name nor do I care, my first thought was of the Dresden Files talking skull, so that’s what we called him.

The games concept is pretty simple, you are a wizard, likely one that has lived for a long time, with a fully stocked pile of ingredients and a cauldron bubbling away on the desk, if you show Bob an item he will explain what it is, in a dark and spooky reverb voice.

Ato

Ato

Ato is an excellent metroidvania, and one of the best I’ve found in a long time. The game opens with very simple movement, but quickly builds upon it with several abilities that make for fast, flexible gameplay.

The main draw to the game is the countless unique boss fights scattered across the map. Combat is designed around using your abilities to interrupt and counter enemy attacks, and the result is fights that are fast, snappy, and extremely satisfying when you finally launch the boss into the air.

Ato is a great metroidvania which focuses primarily on 1v1 samurai-esque duels. The story is short, simple, and entirely visual, but works well regardless. The map is well sized, with collectibles and boss fights filling a majority of the area. Each region of the world is easily distinguished by its flora and strong use of colors. The combat is fast-paced, fun, and tends to be fair in almost every single fight. You can get by on reflexes or, if you want to go a layer deeper, you can use well-timed attacks to stagger enemies and get in heavy damage. It was very rewarding to use my previous experiences from my first playthrough to punish bosses on harder difficulties (when mindless reflexes alone were no longer enough); doing this made most fights play completely differently. All of these factors together sell the experience and make this game worth the price, especially when on sell.

Blood Spear

Blood Spear

No game in the steam catalog can compare to Blood Spear. Having thousands of hours in other steam games, i have decided that this game reigns superior above all. No one should pass up playing this game. A Breathtaking experience, honestly, the convoluted story at the beginning begins to piece itself together as you play. The game play flows well and with non linear areas, you can play the game the way you want to play it. The music is phenomenal, and is comparable to soundtracks of other great triple A games. The idea of a ranged combat is so fresh and different in a convoluted genre of sword hack and slash games. This game CANNOT be compared to the souls games, they are the yin and yang of souls likes. Dark souls being bleak, cold, dark, and repetitive, while Blood Spear is fast pased, high octane, intuitive, as these new ideas are added to the legacy of these games. I hope that this inspires other great Spear-Like games and is a genre i will be keeping up with for years to come.

When a game is soo good that being free seems wrong

  • Third-person Hack and slash

  • Short

  • Great atmosphere

  • Inventive combat mechanics

  • Easy to learn, room for skilled-play

So, if you are still here… Let’s get down to it:

@Chris:

Nobody said it was easy, it’s such a shame for us to part…

Blood Spear is often called a student project… hence why it is so short and free, but make no mistake, winning first prize at ISART Digital Montreal 2021 is no small feat, and calling this a student project is a grave understatement. Picking obvious queues from the likes of Dark Souls, Soul Reaver and more, you get a third-person hack and slash campaign that won’t overstay its welcome, with an easy to learn throwing mechanic (charge and quick-fire) backed up with two inventive skills that add strategy and healing abilities, this compact package leaves you wanting more.

Breath

Breath

Breath is not an easy game, but it is not a long game too.

Start as a simple life-form and evolve your way by defeating the bosses in any order you wish. One ability gained from one boss can help you to defeat another one.

Can you beat the game without deaths? How fast can you beat it? Try yourself in “1 Life Mode” and “SpeedRun Mode”! Compete against your own time or set a custom time to try to be the fastest in the world!

Play multiple times trying different routes and, as you play, unlock new abilities to start the game with, adding layers of complexity.

Don’t forget to try to find all the hidden spider webs.

If you ever feel lost on how to play, pause the game (esc or start) and a button map will show up.

Feylin

Feylin

I like the art and I think that it has potential to be pretty good. I am unsure how to accomplish it but the mouse being the indicator of where you swing your sword isn’t that good when you’re constantly moving around. A different control scheme would certainly help. A little more content would be nice but for the price it was a pretty decent framework for a game. I would also recommend more sounds for when enemies are hit and different ways to attack. Great start for a game but definitely needs work.

What started as what I thought would be a dumb meme of a game turned out to be a really fun experience. I really enjoyed what I played, and really hope the devs continue to update this more. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but with some polish and some gameplay tweaks, it could be a real AMAZING game. Hope to see it grow! Much love!

EDIT 29-DEC:

How are we supposed to get past level 4 without any anti-tank ordnance?

https://youtu.be/8_elbjpSdak

ORIGINAL:

Atmospheric is a very accurate tag for Rokka because gameplay gets surprisingly more difficult as the daylight fades. The atmospheric effect (the real natural phenomenon) plays a big role as you try to determine enemy positions as they emerge from the treeline. This is a great machine gun emplacement simulator and you should give it a shot.

Gameplay is pretty straightforward except I would suggest aiming with the crosshair instead of aiming down sight. Also, the distortion from the heat of the barrel added a whole other level of difficulty but I was able to mitigate it by timing my reloads well because the barrel cools off after reloads.
