Leaf on Wind

Leaf on Wind

A relaxing game though not without its challenges. The scenery helps create a cathartic atmosphere while you breeze about piecing together some pretty poetry. Good for a casual gamer to chill out to.

It’s a Flower clone of sorts. Expected it to be before I bought it though. Except this time instead of flower petals, it’s a single leaf.

Your aim in this game is to go around collecting glowing square thingies in order to make up a poem in each level. Kinda expected something MORE akin to Flower, but I’ll take it. Still a decently chill game to play. The OST is also nice.

That SAID however, after you finish the first 6 levels, to play more of the game, you need do those 6 levels AGAIN but without touching anything. Just feels more like a chore than anything. I gave up at the “repeated” third level, because the wind is just ridiculous and works against you and it’s annoying (and the controls don’t help either, since they aren’t the most fluid thing ever (though not “bad” either)). No offense, but it just takes away from the “relaxing” factor and feels like forced replayability. I’m not a fan of that. Will either push myself to see the rest of the game at some point soon or refund the game, haven’t really decided yet. But yeah, I’m very in the middle with this one tbh.

Sentris

Sentris

Sentris is definitely worth looking into if you have any interest in creating music. It reminds me of my days playing with software such as FruityLoops, but puts its own unique spin on things. I’ve enjoyed playing through the provided songs and am starting to create my own unique setups (as well as attempting to emulate some more widely-known music too).

“What is Sentris in 2 Minutes?” Video:

Overall the game is a lot of fun, and quite a versatile tool once you get to grips with it. That said, there are a few features I would love to see implemented going forward. Primarily these are just additional expansions for added versatility when creating songs. It would be great to be able to select notes outside the standard scale that I choose, and to apply effects (such as reverb or echo) to specific instruments during remix.

I played an early version of this game at PAX last year and could not get my head around it. I dropped blocks haphazardly in to a wheel, not understanding what I was supposed to be doing and not enjoying the sounds I was creating. I walked away feeling embarrassed that I had failed to ‘get’ Sentris.

The tutorial in the release version immediately got me on the right track and removed my doubts about this game. Within five minutes I was creating funky loops that went beyond the tunes the game was feeding me and I felt the thrill of composition that I know the designer was aiming to inspire. There is a real satisfaction in building loops layer by layer and it is especially cool to see how the sound evolves as later layers start to push earlier ones out of the loop. The way the progression of songs helps you learn what the game has to offer in terms of depth is almost perfectly executed, the only thing that I struggled a little to figure out was how to change octaves in freestyle mode (you have to climb or descend the scale to reach the octave you want to play in).

I PET THE DOG OMG OMG OMG I DID IT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

This game made me scream so badly my roommate had to come make sure I wasn’t being murdered.

I really love the different designs and areas. I only played through it once so far and got the bad ending but I definitely want to play it again to see if I can get the other endings. The level and sound design is brilliant, in my opinion. The game really knows how to invoke anxiety and fear into the player. There’s the anticipation for a scare lurking around for the majority of the game. I enjoyed all the puzzles as many of them felt very unique and there was certainly a feeling of relief upon completing specific ones and entering essentially a safe zone.

AntVentor

AntVentor

Short version: 71%

AntVentor is a short, cute, and nice-looking adventure, following the Anamita school of wordless storytelling and handcrafted abstract visuals, with an enthusiastic team behind it.

Long version:

AntVentor cannot deny that it took a massive dose of inspiration from Anamita’s Botanicula, down to the same theme of following the life of a very humanlike bug (an ant, in this case), who tries to escape his role in society to follow his dreams. Similarly, it relies entirely on visual storytelling, even including the hint system.

Real player with 5.1 hrs in game

I want to like this point-and-click adventure/puzzle game, but it sure makes it hard. First, the positives: It looks great, with crisp and detailed imagery, and cute ant characters. It reminds me of the excellent style achieved for the game Samorost 3.

Here’s what I DON’T like:

(1) The point-and-click mechanics are clunky. The pointer hand changes when you can do certain things, but often the hand only changes if you’re on the exact spot where you can do something. It leads you to miss puzzle solutions even when you’re on the right track and trying to click the thing that would give you the solution. It also shows you a “walking” hand (fingers moving) for areas where you can’t actually walk.
