Call of Cthulhu®: Dark Corners of the Earth

Call of Cthulhu®: Dark Corners of the Earth

OLD STYLE HORROR… Oh Yea!

Intro:

This game is based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft, author of “The Call of Cthulhu” and progenitor of the Cthulhu Mythos. It is a reimagining of Lovecraft’s 1936 novella The Shadow over Innsmouth. Set mostly in the year 1922, the story follows Jack Walters (previously a police detective) and now private detective who is trying to solve cases even when there wasn’t any evidence. On September 6, 1915, he was called by the police to investigate a decrepit manor where gunshots were heard. A group of an unknown cult (Fellowship of the Yith) lived there and it’s leader, Victor Holt, demanded the police only send Jack in exchange for their cooperation. Strangely, Jack had never met or heard of Victor Holt before. As Jack entered the manor’s compound, all hell broke loose and both the police and the cultists started shooting at one another. You take it from here. All hell is about to break loose in the game.

I am a fan of both Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s fantastic literary body having read most of his work and also the Role playing game the Call of Cthulhu (the table top one not the new one). I very much enjoyed this game despite the glitches (should you wish to play without the glitches I would suggest that you either buy this game on good old games or install the patch that can be found online, and turn down the resolution for the very last bit of the game to the lowest setting).

I have to say that don’t go into this game expecting something akin to one of Lovecraft’s stories word for word, while it deals with the same themes and even one of the same characters this game is a bit of Lovecraft salad. You get bits from The Shadow over Innsmouth, The Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow out of time, Dagon, At the Mountains of Madness and even some references to The

Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer: Survival Game

Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer: Survival Game

We are one of the first studios who decided to make a videogame based on Mark Twain’s books.

So, we took a chapter from Tom Sawyer’s Adventures book, about him escaping to an island with his friends. And decided that this will perfectly fit into a concept of a survival game. But it is not a plotless survival sandbox. As anything with our studio, our games are highly focused on unique experiences, intrinsic motivation, and player emotions. If we make a survival game - it is going to be unique and most of our time is going to be dedicated to immersing the player and creating a feeling of an authentic teenage adventure inside the player’s head.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl is slavjank at its finest. While the game has aged relatively well, one must still keep in mind that this is a game produced with shoestring budget and had a somewhat troubled development cycle. The caveats in mind, STALKER is an excellent semi-open world shooty-survival-y romp with a decent story to it. The story is told through a few cutscenes, but mostly through either someone radioning you and telling something has happened, or through a dialog box before or after a mission.

Honestly an absolute legend all around, theres always things you’ve missed or hidden spots you havent experienced after you’ve played the game leagues of times, and the lore only goes deeper from here. One of my favorite games of all time, and the beginning to a legendary series.

  • weird main menu behavior

  • steam screenshots don’t work

  • inconsistent text display:

___narrative text displayed on whole screen most of the time but also on lower thirds

___main character gregor appears in lower thirds dialog box even though he has no dialogue

  • art and animation are ok during chapter 1
  • art in chapters 2 & 3 was lackluster and didn’t match the text

Nancy Drew®: Secret of the Old Clock

Nancy Drew®: Secret of the Old Clock

Afaik, this is the only Nancy Drew game that takes place in the past (1930, to be exact). The subtitle of this game was the title of the first Nancy Drew book, which was released that year. As Nancy Drew, you stay at the Lilac Inn in Illinois at the beginning of the Great Depression.

It’s not one of my favorite Nancy Drew games. While one puzzle referred to Shakespeare, it wasn’t all that educational like most other games in the series are. One of the main things about this game is driving around the roads on a world map. You can run out of gas or get a flat tire, so you have to attend to those. You can make money by delivering telegrams. You’re told you get a flat rate for each letter plus tips, but HER Interactive played a funny Depression joke because no one ever tips.

I have been a very regular player of mystery games most of my life. The Nancy Drew Franchise certainly are not at the top of mystery games I’ve played in my life, but i always enjoy them regardless of the quality compared to mystery games that are slightly more evolved when lookin at things like characters and exploration opportunities throughout the world.

Nancy drew is basic point and click with occasional typing needed.

The story is great, the puzzles are hard enough to make you spend some time trying to figure them out and they certainly push you to think out of the box sometimes.

Sword Daughter

I guess this is one where I wished steam had a number or star rating rather than a good/bad option. I bought it some time ago, didn’t particularly like it so put it down for a while and picked it up again recently but found more of the same. Overall I’m coming down on the negative side of neutral with regards to it being a game book written in the 80’s. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen but it has some significant problems with the story.

Firstly some of the graphics are nice. They’re in a consistant style that suits the game book. I didn’t find the music that intrusive (although I turned it right down after a while and it got repetative) and the sound effects are ok.

The first line of this story really should have been: Once Upon a Time. Had it started this way I doubt there would have been so many comments/complaints about character development and short storylines. Truthfully what fairy tale really does have in-depth character development or that much of a plot?

Storyline: Tyrna, a young woman (a maiden) has been trained by her father all her life to be a warrior. On the way to the Warrior Games (a tournament to basically earn the right to be called a warrior) the caravan is attacked by orcs. She is knocked unconscious fighting orcs and because of this is the only remaining survivor of the massacre her father dies in. Gavin, a half-elf/half-human ranger (on patrol) comes upon the carnage and revives her before the orcs return or wild animals find her. Of course it is love at first sight, what fairy tale does not have love at first sight. The adventure and mild romance (mostly of the happily ever type) begins here.

REVIEW

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is a very pleasantly surprising puzzle game, with a high standard of quality and a humorous undertone. Any fans of the puzzler-adventure genre should easily find this game enjoyable. Once you start playing you will likely find yourself engrossed by the experience.

‘The Testament of Sherlock Holmes’ is based on an entirely fictional plot not borrowed from any of Arthur Conan Doyle’s works. The length of the game is a good 25 hours, and one gets to solve lots of puzzles and search every nook and corner for clues. Dr. Watson acts as a valuable accomplice for Holmes and often one will control Watson rather than Holmes.

One feature that I really liked about the game is the graphics. They are very good, although not as good as some of the Tomb Raider games. The game takes place in some very odd yet beautiful settings. Another feature that is praiseworthy is the variety and ingenuity of the puzzles that the developers have created. The ‘Deduction Menu’ can be extremely challenging because one must reach the correct conclusion for each of the clues to reach the correct final conclusion. The music is for the most part dark and spooky, but fits well into the game.
