Intravenous

Intravenous

Intravenous is a stealth-based shooter with a top-down view, and I love it because when stealth goes out the window, you can still pull the situation back.

Gameplay-wise, the game is very, very good. Stealth, while not mandatory, is HEAVILY recommended because the combat is absolutely brutal. Generally, the stealth will consist of you trying your damned best to avoid guards, while the combat will be spamming many claymores at your back. The game heavily rewards exploration of the maps with stuff such as gun supplies and vent shafts that can be used to cheat a level. The gameplay loop is very fun, but on the highest difficulty, the game suffers a bit due to removal of gunplay. On the highest difficulty, since everything dies in one shot, low ROF guns become a joke, while high ROF guns become ““meta””.

A masterpiece of the genre, a twist of early ’00s Splinter Cell style stealth, with a Hotline Miami-esque top down view. Shadow is your only safety when death is but a bullet away.

Punishingly difficult in stealth or full blown combat, your most lethal tools get you killed just as quick as they will your enemies, a poorly timed suppressed gunshot can bring a swarm down upon you, or frags and claymores blast shrapnel far beyond what you expect. Empty magazines, cans, and bottles make great distractions, and a Chaos Theory inspired OCP device lets you knock out lights and cameras. Dancing around your enemies in the dark is difficult, but one slip and the hunt is on, they don’t let up. The AI is smart enough to avoid a trap, opting to take cover and taunt you out.

Good things:

The only good thing about this game is music.

Bad things:

The gameplay and story just wants to be Hotline Miami but fails in every aspect. Enemies are super accurate but at the same time brain dead. With the second character you can just run past them when you destroy doors and they will not notice you and will run to the place where they last heard you. The developer did know how bad this game is and that is why he gave you 3 lives and a few seconds of invisibility and invulnerability after you are killed. Also if you get to a boss you have unlimited number of lives to just defeat that boss so you will win anyway as the boss kills you with one hit but you need many hits to defeat him and 3 lives would not be enough to defeat any boss. The game is also super bad at showing you where is the front and where is the back of the enemy if they don’t carry guns. Also the enemies move chaotically so the ones with guns have their patrol routes that they stick to but all others sometimes go somewhere sometimes just spin in place sometimes they don’t react at you destroying doors while at other times they charge you so you can never really create a strategy and you really need these 3 lives and invisibility after being killed to finish the levels.

I did not have a history with Top-Down Shooters (also known as Twin Stick Shooters) until Hotline Miami. Since then I have started to enjoy them more, especially with Nuclear Throne. I usually saw them as cheap little games that had very little to offer, but those aforementioned games and a few others (Enter The Gungeon) have put them back on the map. However, those heavy-hitters are already so good that one might find it difficult to break some new ground. And yet, Mr. Shifty comes and seduces with a mechanic that just feels perfectly at home with this viewpoint: a “blink” or “teleport” ability, that you might know from Dishonored’s Corvo, X-Men’s Nightcrawler or a few MOBAs that borrow it from WarCraft III’s Warden hero.

## Shadowlings

Shadowlings had a nice appeal for the first 15 minutes. It looked nice and felt nice. The way combat is done felt like something new. Sadly the initial appeal wears off very quickly and slowly declines into a boring grindfest. You get loads of money and XP with no real need for either of them. I kept waiting for game to become more interesting, but it never did. I even thought the final boss was just a prelude to the real boss. After an easy 1min fight you get a few lines of how you are now the leader of your clan, which btw you were the only survivor of…

Really good game, simplistic but lots of strategy involved. I'm lazy and that's all I want to type for now, but overall it's highway robbery at .99 cents. I kind of feel bad buying it that cheap. I think 5-7.50 USD would be a perfect price for this. I'll come back later or tomorrow when I'm sober and expand on what I think could be improved on a bit. All simple fixes too. Anyways, highly recommended, great 2d top strategic swordfighter game.

40% of the time you meet kids that rip your ears apart from the inside but other 60% when you meet actually normal people , you can have the best murder mystery ever. Really good game for the money , not at all repetitive unlike some other games of the same genre. I really like murder mystery in movies , books or games and this was exactly what i expected. If only the games lasted longer or there was a bigger map , perhaps other maps.

For the money , it's worth to atleast try the game.

## Portal Defect

I really wanted to like this game given its similarity to hotline miami, as well as looking really gorgeous, but there are just too many things wrong with it for this to be currently sold out of early access. Some examples being, the game being 20gb when it can be compressed down to 10gb through Compactor, it being incredibly unoptimized (my 1060,i7-7k, 16gb of ram rig struggling to push out 50-60 fps), not being able to turn off/turn down the repetitive music even though theres an option in settings(!), melee weapons feeling incredibly clunky, and falling out of the literal map. On the other hand, I will say that there are some really good aspects about the game such as the previously mentioned graphics being really pretty and some of the mechanics are kind of interesting. However in its current state I feel the dev has just rushed the gun on marketing this spaghetti code, and if he really felt that he wanted to make it great, his plan should have been making some version of this a free demo and THEN publish a polished game, instead of the current mess that it is. However, I suspect that this game has ultimately been abandoned given there havent been any updates since april of this year (and it was published of january of this year), but I suppose time will tell.

For and early access game its, fine leaning on not being a good first impression. The games music is broken and continues playing at the loudest volume possible, the loading and performance is heavily unoptimized to the point where even my 1070 and i7 seem stressed. The hit registration is confusing and inconsistent as hell when you think you should hit or be hit by a melee weapon, it doesnt land, not to mention most guns dont sound or hit the way you would think, a shotgun seems to fire as if it was a semi automatic assault rifle without any power, it feels like its shooting 5.56 or 9mm rounds. The spells have no impact and aren't explained either. If you want to go in barehanded you cant even attack. The loading of levels is just strange and laggy. Nothing really motivates me to move forward, and this first impression has been a very sour one so far. I can't recommend this game so far although it looks like it can have potential. Don't take this the wrong way but i've been keeping an eye out on this game and it look interesting, i want it to succeed but in its current state it leaves much to be desired even in early access compared to the other games i have played.

## Suit for Hire

This is the best non-turn-based John Wick simulator. Running around face shooting and doing gun fu and knife takedowns never gets old. My only complaint would be the difficulty, but for me that just makes it have more value as I play a level over and over trying to beat it. Some might get frustrated, though, at going all the way back to the beginning of each level when you die.

Each level gives you a set location and group of badguys to take out, usually on your way to some kind of objective, even though there is no story at present to give any meaning to the killing. That is fine with me, but it might urk some. They are planning to add cut scenes, though, so for now, make up your own story about how the people he's going after killed his car and stole his dog right after his sister died or something.

The combat for this game is well executed.

It rewards you with a full magazine for landing 7 back-to-back pistol shots.

Missed some of your shots? No problem, the game encourages you to mix it up with a close quarters option as a stylishly fancy way of getting more ammo for your pistol.

Performing an up close finisher on an enemy gives you a full magazine in your pistol. In order to have a chance to do a finisher you'll need to build up a meter using punches and kicks.

Punch and kick are on 2 separate buttons, this is important to take note of because kicking objects towards enemies (including grenades) is a mechanic in the game.

There are a lot of games that were inspired by 'Hyper Light Drifter' and they mostly failed as individual games for various reasons, but out of those that I played I liked this one the most. Despite the visual similarities to HLD that many people are calling a ripoff, Resolutiion clearly had a talented artist and I don't want to take anything away from him; the games might look similar but it's not a clone of HLD. Surprisingly the best part of this game was the story, the writing was just excellent and absorbed me into the universe, although the delivery of that story was somewhat questionable, mainly because I felt like the characters came and went too quickly. Still, I thought the lore for the universe was very compelling, from what I understand the humanity was taken over by technological advances and those few that remained isolated started a war against the 'progress', although It was kinda vague and confusing.
