Chess Knights: Shinobi

Edit: Updated playthrough with ALL the normal levels here: https://youtu.be/Zr-5X2c3k8Y

Great game but god dang is it difficult not sure if it was the alcohol or the fact my chess I.Q. is 42 but it was a fun little brain boggler killing the Generals was extremely satisfying after trying not to get spanked by some simp rooks/bishops. Not sure how to get all the achievements since I hid in a bush and didn’t get the hide in a bush achievement (got faito achievement at later date which has been included in video thanks to user carmylle on steam) but if you need help on any of the levels. my play through with all levels here: https://youtu.be/xhNwdCEFKZo

Really great minimalist puzzle game. The recent update tripled the content of an already great game, definitely worth the price here. Knights are my least favorite chess piece, but playing them as a ninja may have changed my view of them.

The difficulty scales wonderfully right up until the last level which is very very hard, but just enough to where you feel accomplished when you beat it. The only negative I have here is you can’t pan the camera, only zoom and rotate. Other than that this is a standout of the minimalist puzzle genre.

Review

+ Merits:

The PC definitive version of the game witnessed the removal of microtransactions, minor graphical improvements, and the touch screen is now replaced with the mouse. The game’s puzzles are smart and can be a bit challenging if the player seeks to complete the bonus objectives in each level. There is a wide variety of tactics to be considered while playing each board game, as each board has a unique theme with different tools and routes.

(I got this game for free from a friend)

Isn’t it strange when you come across a mobile game that doesn’t actually suck… but is instead fun and challenging? That’s what my experience with Hitman GO was like.

I vividly remember playing Hitman: Absolution a few years ago and feeling like the guy from this Youtube clip: $https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31g0YE61PLQ (you’ll have to copy and paste the url without the $ at the start because embedded Youtube videos tend to freeze the Steam client). Ok, it wasn’t that bad. But while both Hitman: Absolution and Hitman GO are not true Hitman games… the latter’s better for it. Unlike Hitman: Absolution, Hitman GO is a solid title that confidently knows what it wants to be and because of this it can stand strong on its own two feet.

Bright Paw

Bright Paw

“Bright Paw” is a relaxing, very easy puzzle adventure with an adorable cat protagonist, cute stylized graphics, and an interesting story that unfortunately doesn’t really find closure.

You play as Theo, a cat whose owner has just been murdered. While trying to find the killer, you discover an entire secret facility full of robots, lasers, and other traps. The story is narrated via whimsical voice-overs, as well as texts that describe collectibles which you keep finding. The narrator also comments on your actions, similar to the narrators of “Bastion” or “The Stanley Parable”.

An adorable little 2.5d to top-down puzzler game that has you going through different levels and has limited environmental interaction, but going from a simple home invasion to, well, you have to find out, is like an early draft for something from the X-Files or a Cat rendition of an episode of LOST.

Game-play involves choosing a limited amount of cards that specify what action you want to perform at that time to traverse obstacles and explore the ever-widening story that makes me think of the show “Lost”, where it throws out a avalanche of ideas and design, but only explains a handful. /You thought it was a simple plane crash, didn’t you?/

Death Coming/死神来了

Death Coming/死神来了

Wow. Apparently the game was released by accident and just happened to come across my queue this morning. So I took a chance and tried it out, not realizing just how “new” it was.

The concept is great. You are assisting the grim reaper and you have to kill as many people as possible. Each level has three specific targets that are harder to kill and must be lured or tricked in order to get them to come out. The challenge comes from two areas. First, some traps are one time or limited use. So if you don’t have people lined up just right, or have every single person in the same area that this trap can hit, then you can’t get a perfect score (by killing everyone). The second challenge comes in the form of angels. The more you kill, the more angels show up. If they see you messing with anything, you loose a heart. Loose all three, and you restart the level.

A fun little puzzle game, Death Coming tasks you as a helper of the Grim Reaper himself and helping him harvest as many souls as you can in your quest to get your reward of another chance in life. To do this you must explore a varietyof different situations, from the casual neighborhood, a factory, to even a mysterious tropical island, exploring various ways to kill not only the random NPCs but also your special marked targets (that offer a special ending if you get them all).

All in colorful pixel graphics with a lot of funny little situations and animations, simple but serviceable quriky music that fits the premise, making for a very pleasant game.

HITMAN™ 2

HITMAN™ 2

After 700 hours of playing I’m still enjoying this game.

The storyline of the game (not including Hitman 1 DLC missions) will give you at least 180 hours of gameplay (360 hours including Hitman 1 DLC missions; Sniper missions and Patient Zero DLC ) if you go for all the challenges.

Spoiler alert: the Mumbai challenge “Feed the Birds” is bugged so you cannot achieve 100% game completion (I find this extremely annoying) :|

I do actually like this game, and I’m probably gonna buy Hitman III instantly when it launches on steam next year, but IO Interactive’s anti-consumer policies is preventing me from recommending this game.

Cons:

•Always online DRM system for a singleplayer game, if your internet disconnects for a second, it tells you either to try to reconnect, or switch to offline mode, which brings us to the next point.

•Your progress in offline mode is null, void, inexistent, since the game only tracks and saves your progress only when you’re online.

Features:

  • A simple cohesive story keeping the puzzles tied up together.

Each city tells its own tales, introducing new characters with interesting backstories.

It is a game with essentially a linear story structure. But on few occasions, a companion character asks you to make a choice, which will later prove to be important.

  • Roster of engaging puzzles using the mechanics in new and unexpected ways.

Each city introduces a new puzzle mechanic. And every puzzle builds itself on top of the previous ones, increasing the challenge and also keeping it fresh.

Hitman: Blood Money

Hitman: Blood Money

Classic Hitman! There’s a reason people say this is the best Hitman game so far, and I totally agree.

I used to play this game in my early teens, and bought it again so I could have it on Steam (yeah, it is THAT good).

The missions are well thought-out, and take place on very unique locations. Each level is completely different from the other, and you never get the “I think I’ve done this before” feeling, because this game completely ditches the “Just go there and kill that guy” mechanic. The methods you choose to kill your target (or targets) really do feel unique, and the same thing will never work twice. You have to analyze your surroundings, the relationship between your targets and think about what will happen if you do X (this is one of the few games I ever played where the mission briefing REALLY is worth reading, because it gives you very important insight on the targets).

Real player with 74.6 hrs in game

To start off, this game is awesome, and surprisingly good considering its age. I’ve never played a Hitman game before this one, it was cheap and had higher reviews than the other older games in the series, and I would now definitely consider myself a fan of the series.

This game is a “social stealth” game, meaning that you hide in plain sight, utilizing disguises, subterfuge, and clever tricks of your environment to take down your targets, and walk away nonchalantly from either the chaos (if you like a more comedic high profile approach), everyone’s lack of awareness that any killing happened at all (if you want to be a ninja), or from everyone’s shock that a chandelier “accidentally” fell on the party host’s face RIGHT when his wife blew up from a faulty BBQ propane tank (the best, most difficult, and rewarding way to do things).

Shadow Tactics: Aiko’s Choice

Shadow Tactics: Aiko’s Choice

It’s like they were short on their Q4 financials and some bean counter said, “Hey, how can get a quick cash infusion before Dec. 31?” And then someone said, “I think there’s a bit leftover on the Shadow Tactics cutting room floor we can wrap up in a bow and sell for cash grab so we can all get our Christmas bonuses.”

This DLC is just way too short. No new characters or abilities. And all the achievements are super easy. There’s no achievements for doing the missions on hard difficulty. No achievements for getting all the badges. It’s like this was all just quickly picked up off the floor and thrown together.

Real player with 20.9 hrs in game

Not much to say here, it’s more of the brilliant Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, for which you can see my review here . It’s made in the exact same engine, so all the pros and cons of my original review stand.

The 3 short interlude missions, with no badges, allow for a more relaxed pace to deliver story and plot in. This adds character and is very welcomed. The maps are most huge and, as usual, richly detailed (except the second, which takes place on an archipelago with smaller sandy islands that tend to look mostly the same).
