Neverdark

Neverdark

_On December 24th, 2030 a global blackout occurred. In an instant the world lost access to electricity, and suddenly so many things that we had taken for granted were gone; the Internet, global communications, electronic devices… all gone.

War emerged as governments fell and society collapsed in upon itself. Guns, medicine and food became the new currencies while survival and protection became the sole necessities. Conflicts continued for years as ordinary people battled against famine, disease, the elements, and other humans.

A new world rose from the ashes of the old one. Each survivor enclave had a different idea on how to shape their new society: bands of raiders, religious cults, biker gangs, idealistic democratic communes and organisations built around charismatic leaders. Cities were once again battlegrounds, but it was no longer for survival, it was now for domination._

Neverdark is a pausable RTS game which throws you into a post-apocalyptic world. Following a global blackout, society has collapsed, and it will be your goal to rebuild it.

You lead a group of survivors, and you will need to contend with other factions over the control of the city. Invest resources and expand your influence to take over the city, street by street. Neverdark is as much about politics and social evolution as it is about combat.

In Neverdark you play in a fallen and ruined city. It is in desperate need of being rebuilt, and it will be your task to adapt it to the harsh conditions with makeshift infrastructure. Each map takes the shape of a real, existing city: Paris, New York and Tokyo. You will find yourself leading your citizens and expanding across familiar streets, taking over existing buildings and repurposing them. Perhaps you might want to use the Louvre Museum as the seat of your Black Market, or it might be a good idea to grow your crops on Rooftop Farms in Brooklyn. Building placement needs to be strategic and thoughtful. Where they’re placed, and the consequences of that choice, rests entirely in your hands.

A new type of society has emerged – one without a central government. Your goal is to react to dynamic, random events which force you to decide between doing what is ethically right and what is politically advantageous. New laws must be passed, and edicts must be enforced if civilisation is to evolve and adapt to ever-changing conditions.

One way or another you need to deal with other groups competing for control of the city. Both you and your enemies have powerful and influential agents at your disposal. You will need to send those agents, known in-game as specialists, across the city to perform political and military tasks. A Political Agitator in a neighborhood where two factions are fighting for dominance may help sway the locals into supporting you. But should that fail, and you find the enemy has gotten there first, a good long-range ‘motivator’ with a rifle could be equally effective. Inevitably the streets must turn crimson with bloodshed, and it will be your duty to lead your crew of specialists in tactical, turn-based combat missions.

Rogue Summoner

Rogue Summoner

Fun game, not for everyone and often quite unforgiving but something fresh and new.

It’s a combination of a Roguelike and a creature game, which is unusual in itself, but rather than command them, they act based on pre decided abilities and behaviours and where you place them, though you are shown a lot of what might happen on a turn. There is some trial and error as you learn the creatures abilities, but it’s very satisfying when it all comes together. And the guide iIve just made tells you what all the creatures do so there is that.

FRONTRUNNERS

FRONTRUNNERS

A new cult spreads viciously, far and wide through social media platforms, rituals are performed to summon Entities to your dimension, they call themselves the Children Of Nyx. a shady private military known as FRONTRUNNERS clear areas of the entities and collect important intel on the cult to stop the spread and prevent further damage, you are a FRONTRUNNER.

Weapon Customization / Roguelite Elements

Purchase weapons, upgrade them with sights, foregrips and suppressors, and enter several maps to complete both primary and secondary objectives, completing objectives garners you more and more money, but dying will cause the loss of your guns and items.

Diverse And Special Enemy Types

During your flight, you will discover different forms of enemies, with specialties, but none compare to the boss enemies, who will stalk from the shadows, and are the most deadly you will find, stay observant, cover each other’s backs, or die together.

Customization That Matters

What you carry on you matters, how many magazines do you want to bring, how many grenades/flashes do you want to bring, what medical equipment to bring, etc. There are many decisions to be made, everything affects your weight, thus affecting your sprinting speed, and turning speed. However better packs and training your body can increase your carrying capacity. Also, you can share gear with your friends, so one person can carry medical supplies etc.

Medical System

Your body can only take so many hits, once you go down, you’re not out of the fight, you will be downed until healed by a teammate, or on the hardcore mode you’re able to bleed out. If you’re hit, there is a chance you will start bleeding, bleeding will lower you to 20hp, where you are one hit. However there are ways to still be in the fight better, First Aid Kits allow you to either heal yourself while downed or pick your friends up quicker. Bandages allow you to heal a small amount of HP and stop bleeding out. Medical Kits allow you to heal large amounts of HP and become fully healed.

CO-OP

Team up with friends through Steam invites to complete your contracts, no splitting money, everyone gets the full amount, having a team will allow you to cooperatively move through the maps, if you cooperate, you will have a much better chance of survival. Playing with a squad will also allow you to revive each other, meaning you can avoid losing your weapons.

Starship Troopers - Terran Command

Starship Troopers - Terran Command

Starship Troopers - Terran Command is a thrilling real-time strategy game set in the Starship Troopers movies universe. Take command of the Mobile Infantry and do your part in the war against the Arachnid threat. Build, develop and control your armies to strike an effective balance between tactical superiority and strength in numbers. Ensure that human civilization, not insect, dominates the galaxy now and always!

Story Campaign

The population of the harsh desert planet Kwalasha needs our help. Their daily lives of hard work in the mining industries has been disturbed by a new danger that they cannot face alone: the Arachnid.

The Mobile Infantry will swiftly move in, take back control over the planet and smash everything that has more than two legs. Take part of this exciting military campaign, meet unique characters, see amazing locations and experience the heroic war against the Bug - all presented live on FED NET!

Tactics & Numbers

While the Arachnids can rely on virtually limitless numbers, the Mobile Infantry must develop effective tactics to overcome this imbalance. Deploy your units at strategic locations to cover vital choke points and gain superior firepower through tactical use of elevation levels. Be wary, however, that battle mechanics such as True Line of Sight and True Line of Fire also allow Bugs to lay ambushes around every corner, as they are well known for their use of surprise attacks and deception.

Units & Abilities

An expansive range of unique units, weapons, and special abilities are at the disposal of M.I. commanders. Infantry squads armed with Morita Assault Rifles and MX-90 Fragmentation Grenades form the mainstay of your forces. Rocket Troopers deliver deadly payloads with pin-point accuracy while Engineers are vital to shore up defensive positions with MG turrets, barricades, and minefields. As a campaign progresses, technological breakthroughs unlock the true potential of the Federation’s arsenal with E-Pulse rifles, TAC Fighter airstrikes, heavily armed Marauder mechs, and many more developments optimized for spraying Bug ichor across the battlefield.

Key features

  • An immersive storyline campaign featuring unique missions, characters and a lot of Starship Troopers flavor

  • Dozens of unique unit types, each with their own special abilities.

  • Terrain elevation, True Line of Sight & True Line of Fire provide deep tactical gameplay.

  • Manage a fleet of dropships, expand your base infrastructure and capture strategic positions to strengthen your forces and unlock new weaponry

  • Heroics, explosions, gore, and Bugs. Lots of Bugs.

Close Combat: Last Stand Arnhem

Close Combat: Last Stand Arnhem

TL;DR:

A fun nostalgia trip for those who enjoyed the Squad Leader board game series, or the original Close Combat games. However, it still possesses many of the same flaws from the originals with few original elements, and $40 dollars for a slight remaster of a 22 year old game is absurd. Buy it on sale.

I grew up playing Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far (for brevity, CC:ABTF), and I loved it. Close Combat: Last Stand Arnhem is an incredibly faithful recreation of A Bridge Too Far: literally. This is both a positive and negative; the best aspects of CC: ABTF, such as it’s grueling difficulty and necessary mastery of basic military tactics are beautifully preserved, as are the worst elements from the 1997 game. Needless to say, I was excited to see that the game had been remade, even if it was given an absurd, $40 price tag. Happily, I was not disappointed.

Started playing Avalon Hill Advanced Squad Leader in late 70’s early 80’s, so I’m an old Grognard. Have the first Close Combat game and all the other ones in the series. So my opinion may be biased. This is a slow moving, very tactical type of Infantry combat. What works in real life works in this game. You better make sure your advancing troops have an over watch and you are suppressing the enemy or you will get cut up good. The realism factor is high. A 60mm mortar or heavy MG will not take out a Tiger, but will do some damage on personnel carriers. Line of Sight is tricky. Not everyone in the squad can see the enemy, so placement of units is vital. Of course the opposite is true. If you can see the enemy he can see you. It is a game of timing. Know when to expose yourself and when to hide. Know when to rush the position and when to stay covered. Although human realism is also factored into your units. If a unit is getting pounded pretty good some soldiers will head for the hills or surrender. And they sure won’t get out of that ditch and rush the position. But as with war and realism and based off of the ASL model you must keep your Platoon and HQ leaders close to your infantry units. And sometimes a hero will rise up and save the day. It’s random and no scenario plays the same way twice. All the soldiers have names and gain experience as the campaign plays out. Was being real careful with some units and gaining experience thru a campaign when they got trapped by three Panthers and just destroyed. They were screaming to get them out and cries of Medic were ringing in my headphones. I swear I had tears in eyes in the absolute frustration of listening to their pleas not being able to do anything but watch. I could only imagine what that had to be like in real life. Watching your friends get slaughtered. But I think that is one of the reasons that a game like this resonates with a true wargamer. To become emotionally involved with digital and fictional characters is a high endorsement for any game. Spoiler alert: I cried in Red Dead Redemption II when Arthur’s horse died in the end too. Yeah I’m an old sap.

Epicinium

Really fun strategy game with an environmental twist. This premise has you doubting between going all-in for the win and playing more conservatively to preserve the environment. I played beta for the past two years and the final version is even more polished! Server issues on launch day aside, great game and I certainly recommend it.

Extra fun when playing with friends, the AI is a decent matchup for beginners but can be predictable at times.

Update: Even better with the map editor and workshop update. You can now play with your friends on maps that you created yourself.

I would rate this:

Overall - 7/10

Strategy - 10/10

Graphics - 7/10

Originality - 9/10

Replay ability - 4/10

This game is great fun and it seemingly has the perfect balance of R.N.G. and strategy. I have never found myself in a spot where bad R.N.G. couldn’t have been avoided. Playing with friends is great if you can, but the AI are a good challenge. (The AI NeuralNewt on hard can put up a great fight.) This game isn’t really complete yet, I heard of some additions and maybe a campaign being added later on but the game as it is is fantastic- in concept. As I said don’t let its retro graphics fool you. It can drag out and be a bit and become, well, less nuanced to state it simply, and after playing it for a while, both through playing many rounds and/or long games.

Chess Evolved Online

Chess Evolved Online

The developer is clearly insane, and there are numerous horrific flaws that I assume will never be fixed ever. The good news is that it takes a while for the true gravity of those flaws to start affecting you, and until then you can enjoy this game a lot.

Here is a small sampling of some of the terrors of the past, although they may be gone*, they surely portend of more great sorrow in the future:

1. Turn one checkmate was once possible. Yes it is as bad as it sounds. Although it could be staved off by simply covering ever square within a 3 square radius of your king.

Real player with 752.7 hrs in game

Chess Evolved Online is an extremely frustrating game to play, and not for the right reasons. While it has an incredibly compelling base for a game and that is fun for a long time, you eventually get to a level where, at the highest rankings (I am currently in the top 50 as of this review, rank ~4400), you are forced to play only the most boring stally armies or lose a lot of rating because of effective RNG where other armies hard-counter your pieces.

So while I am giving this game a positive review out of support for being much better than most games out there, it still feels dreadful to play due to developer incompetence.

Chessaria: The Tactical Adventure (Chess)

Chessaria: The Tactical Adventure (Chess)

TL;DR A game of chess and chess-puzzles, with an extremely high-cliché fantasy theme. Quite engaging, highly-polished and very enjoyable.

Full Review

I discovered this title by accident, but wow… what a surprise! I quite like chess, but it does tend to be a) quite clinical and b) too difficult. This game, however, fixes that! Chessaria comes with a quick-play mode against the computer with a few chess variants (standard chess, plus some asymmetric variants and other unusual scenarios). It also has a multiplayer mode, that lets you play against friends online. And then there is the “Adventure” (the single-player campaign). The Adventure takes you on a journey through the land, and presents 100 varied and engaging chess puzzles (and the occasional full game of chess).

On Steam I was browsing and saw someone had a game called Chessaria on a wishlist or had just purchased it. I took a look because I’m a fan of chess. Maybe not the biggest fan but I’ve played over 100 games on lichess.org (my profile page) and more elsewhere, so I know what I’m doing. Chessaria brought back memories of when I first got into computer chess and promised tactical puzzles with Chessaria: The Tactical Adventure. Alright, it had my attention.
