In My Defense

In My Defense

This is a challenging, old-school, retro, side-scrolling shooter. You must defend your base, against the onslaught of alien attackers.

Features:

  • Radar of entire playfield, shows where threats exist

  • Picture in picture view of the base, so you can keep an eye on it

  • 28 waves

  • 15 power-ups. Power-ups can be combined

  • 10 bonus twin-stick shooter levels, starring Hitch, the security robot, take place under the base. Many enemies on these levels are spawned by generators, that must be destroyed. Ensects attack power generators, damaging the base. There are gas outlets that cause large explosions, if shot.

  • Multiple weapons, including: Lasers, Bombs, and the dreaded Sonic Bomb, which can mass-kill enemies

  • Many enemy types, each with unique abilities

  • Boss battles

  • Snow, thunderstorm, and darkness environments. Dark environments must be lit with flares

  • AI-powered wingmen can be summoned to assist. Careful, they can be turned against you

  • Rock launchers help you defend the base. You can pick them up and re-position them with your ship

  • You can escort evacuation ships to the opposite side of the playfield. If they escape, you are rewarded with resources

  • Defensa- your ship’s computer voice. She informs you when you activate power ups, warns of threats, and makes comments about the unfolding events

  • Original Soundtrack- original soundtrack written specifically for the game by six different composers

  • Optional arcade style controls, where the joystick on the gamepad only moves your ship vertically. Horizontal movement is done via thrust and reverse buttons

  • Randomized waves - no two waves are the same, for improved re-playability

A gamepad is recommended.

Photosensitive seizure warning

Thunderstorm levels have lightning flashes in the sky.

A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while playing video games.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any symptoms.

Check out this awesome retro shooter. Apparently most people have been completing it in 2-3 hours but I’m 3 hours in and only 1/2-2/3 through the game. Gameplay is simple but a little unusual (in a good way). Really have a lot of fun with it!

The best way I can describe this is as a “top down metroidvania” with bullet hell elements. Exploring is as fun as clearing rooms. Retro graphics are simplistic but well done. Challenging and very fun.

BOT.vinnik Chess: Opening Traps

BOT.vinnik Chess: Opening Traps

Moves a bunch of pieces around the board very quickly without giving you much time to take in what is happening on the board, nor explaining why, tells you it’s a popular move (which one? all of them? black or white?). Then demands you “Find the BEST move!”. Well that depends doesn’t it? What am I trying to achieve? So I start moving what ‘I think’ is the best move. Nope, that was wrong and it doesn’t mind telling you in no uncertain terms. I try another. Wrong again! Only this time i’m being patronised. WTH?! Instead of berating me for getting it wrong, tell me what my objective is and explain why moving a certain piece is preferable over moving another. I might actually learn something useful within Chess and not what a waste of oxygen I am.

Compost

Compost

A fun little game that is a mix of tower defense and critter simulation.

There are many various critters in the game with each type having their own behavior and priorities,

some being peaceful, some preying on other types of critters, some plants having different ways to spread, some critters eating specific plants and so on, which makes for a surprising amount of artificial intelligence in the game.

You don’t control anything directly but instead are given power to generate a breeze that gently pushes stuff around.

This is a great game! A retro style with a current social feel! Some things I like about it:

1. It feel like playing one of my arcade machines

2. Who doesnt want their garden to thrive?

3. The game is explained just enough that makes you think about what you need to do in order for your garden to stay healthy

4. While there are not tons of critters/plants/baddies to understand its great fun learning how they all interact and what they do

I really do enjoy playing this game and look forward to the next round of mouse clicking madness! (thank goodness for pause!)

Red Laser Z

Red Laser Z

An incredibly fun game, almost in its own genre.

Red Laser Z stars a bounty hunter of sorts, Janine Potts. Across 10 levels you’ll be introduced to what I can only call, a ‘precision retro shooter’. The feeling of all the models and gunplay is not dissimilar to that of say, Rise of the Triad. But that’s wrong, because every shot you make is a one hit kill for the enemy, if you hit the right target. Focusing on one aspect of shooting that’s not always covered, aiming, you’ll have to peak corners, hit weak spots, and most importantly: don’t hit the wrong targets. That’s right, if you hit certain objects or NPCs enough, game over, restart stage. It’s an incredibly addicting combo, and the creator (who’s just one guy) knows it. Tracking each shot, taking score, it’s possible not to miss a single shot in a level. I never could do it, but there’s a definite score-chasing arcady side to the game. There’s also traps and secrets you can find to increase said score, and they’re pretty hard to find. Good luck to anyone that tries.

Pretty fun, easy to pick up and play. Only gripe i have with it is how easy it is to accidentally destroy something, gotta be accurate.

BlackChain

Great game. Pathing and controls are super smooth. It is incredible that this is made by a single person. Only in terms of features, you notice that it’s just a single dev. It is only one race and multiplayer is only possible through LAN (virtual LAN for online play) and 2v2 still has some issues with desyncs. But everything that is in the game is unique and high quality. I really enjoy the micro in this game. It has a bit of a modern Starcraft: BroodWar feeling but it is still quite different. With the low price of only 4€, there is no reason not to get this game. The AI is pretty good even without cheating and tries to actively hunt down your workers with air units for example. The dev deserves the support so he is able to create more content for this. (I have received the key from a giveaway which has nothing to do with the dev)

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

Real-time strategy, once the second most important genre after FPS games, is dead, isn’t it? While the few releases of recent years were mostly below average, there are some exceptions. This is one.

Great indie real-time stragegy game, heavily inspired by the seminal Starcraft. Build structures, build units, mine ressources and crypto-currency, wipe your enemies off the map. Fully voiced units and 12 campaign missions (all unlocked from the beginning), even a network option. Great little game - what a nice surprise!

Hockey Manager 20|20

Hockey Manager 20|20

The game is as deep of a hockey sim as I’ve ever seen, however no NHL license is a bit of an immersion killer for me, because I spend more time editing than I do playing. Another downer for me is not having the ability to choose between Euros and Dollars or KG’s and LB’s. When there is a complete overhaul to the US and Canadian teams available in the workshop then I’ll be more interested in playing, but until then it’s FHM for me. If you don’t mind the lack of an NHL license and or editing for months, then the game might be for you. If you’re like me though, I can’t recommend it.

I like the editing options, there is a lot of play editing possibilities and you can even save and load edited databases. you can even get some addons here https://wasserlasser.com/

Although u might be spending a long time in the editor, the overall gameplay is nice and chill.
