Negative: The Way of Shinobi

This is a textbook example of how a game can do nothing to teach its players how to play. Tried to do the tutorial and it wouldnt go past the initial buttons. Had to figure everything else out from looking up the controls. Once you do figure it out it’s somewhat decent. Movement feels a little strange and abilities (Specifically kunai and grapple) feel extremely wonky on Keyboard, almost unplayable. I’m guessing this is a game meant to be played on controller. If you’re a keyboard player I wouldn’t recommend.

Shadow Gangs

Shadow Gangs

Prelude:

I met the developer of Shadow Gangs a decade ago on a Retro forum. He first started this project back in 2015, as a Kickstarter campaign which unfortunately was cancelled.

He knew that I was loved the arcade version of Shinobi, and was very good at it.

Imagine my surprise when he asked me to be a beta tester and give feedback; what an honour and privilege.

Review:

Firstly, let me just say that this game is absolutely spectacular!!! Not only does this live up to my perceived expectations, but far exceeds them by a long shot.

If you don’t like old school games and don’t have a knack for giving your best in accomplishing a challenge then Shadow Gangs isn’t for you. Only the elite members of the Hall Of Kage can acquire such an unbeatable task but if you dare to give it your all maybe….just maybe, you shall stand among the legends and say I am a Shadow Gang Master!

Samurai Aces

Samurai Aces

Samurai Aces (AKA Sengoku Ace) was Psikyo’s first shooting game and set the format they would stick with for the rest of their releases. It features a cast of playable characters with unique abilities, a randomly-selected stage order, short stages with multi-phase boss battles, and a punishingly-difficult second loop that can be accessed by clearing the game on one credit. Psikyo stuck with this formula and gradually tweaked it for later releases including the Strikers series, Gunbird 1 and 2, and Dragon Blaze, but this is its point of origin.

Compared to Gunbird, Samurai Aces is much more difficult. It’s not Raiden difficult, however. The difficulty lies primarily in the ships being too slow and the bullets being too fast. You’ll get up to speed if you keep at it, though. I didn’t care for Samurai Aces much at first; but the longer I played, the more I enjoyed it. I love the 80’s/90’s drawings, sprites, strong ancient Japanese themes, and wacky humor, which doesn’t go over the top (unlike Gunbird). This game really takes me back. (I never played Samurai Aces previously, by the way.)

I LOVED BALL ADVENTURE BALL SIMULATOR BUT THE REWORK IS TERRIBLE!!!! JUST MAKE ANOTHER GAME AND DONT CHANGE THE OLD ONE. I CANT BOTHER TO BEAT THE NEW GAME BECAUSE ITS SO INCONSISTENT WITH CLIMBING AND SOME OTHER STUFF I CANT THINK OF RIGHT NOW!! THIS SUCKS!

This game is a perfect way to spend your time when you don’t know what to do. Its easy to understand but it supplies challenging gameplay that keeps you hooked as you try your best to reach the next level. The graphics and music might not be the best but if you give the developer some motivation this game could grow into so much more and they could go onto making more games for us to play. The game is free so theres no reason to not try it. Yeah if you don’t like it you may lose about 10 mins but that about it.

Super Hyperactive Ninja

Ninjas and coffee? Maybe it isn’t historically accurate, but it sure as heck makes sense. Ninjas are always flipping out and stuff, and they don’t seem to ever slow down.

If the cut-scenes are any indication Super Hyperactive Ninja draws a large part of its inspiration from the iconic Megaman series at least in its story and presentation, with a story centered in the year “15XX” and a nostalgic opening that should be familiar to any fans of the Blue Bomber. The retro similarities end there though, as Hyperactive Ninja has an entirely unique and hectic mechanic that makes it a fresh and modern platforming experience.

I totally recommend this game (if you don’t mind the price).

I think the honest value would be 50% of what it costs, the game is very fast, very repetitive (in the good sense of repetitive)

you can beat the game in 3hours easily, it’s like an arcade game.

basically it’s a mash simulator, but with some small variations of combos and items (kunai).

if you’ve played odin sphere, the satisfaction in the combo is the same, but much simpler combos.

don’t expect anything from the enemies' artificial intelligence, they’re just standing there to take damage.
