ExZeus 2 (Legacy)
Mecha Space Harrier
So this is another hidden gem on Steam, a sequel to an obscure classic Exzeus 1 from the Sega Naomi arcade boards and later ported to the PS2, Wii (renamed as Shoot Out and Counter Force) and PC. This one came out first for the Android platforms, then ported to Windows 8 store and a few years later here to Steam. So what is this?
Well in its core it is a Space Harrier type of game where you are on-rails, but can move around the screen blasting everything in your way. But Exzeus 2 puts his own spin on this formula by breaking the on-rails action with on-foot sections which are in 3rd person, in small areas where enemies spawn and you run around freely shooting and punching them. There are also occasional vehicle sections like bikes and jeeps which all have different moves you can pull off. At the end of each level, there is a huge boss with weak points to exploit.

I’m surprised to find that ExZeus 2 is pretty much the closest to a StarFox 64-style game I’ve seen on Steam so far… It’s got a good arcadey pace to it, with things happening all over that you have to react to and lots of mode switching to different kinds of action sequences. The main 3D shmup sequences are intense but tightly controlled with lots of shooting.
However: the constant mode switching means that they’ve implemented a bunch of different little action games, and I don’t like all of them equally. The combat on foot part is by far my least favorite, and the most common. Turning around and shooting enemies feels like driving a drunk pig, and it seems like they think that this mode is a good way to show you new character models, with little introductions each time a mechanically indistinguishable enemy is introduced, but this game isn’t good- or strange-looking enough for that to entertain me much at all.

Imagine taking a Transformers type game, and then transforming it into an on-rails-shooter! What you’d soon find yourself immersed inside of is the action-packed sci-fi game I’m about to review now, aptly called MechRunner, which was recently developed & published by Spark Plug Games this past year.
Its storyline is admittedly a rather interesting one, in that it based on partially factual events from the past. And it plays out like this: alien technology fell into Russian hands during the Tunguska incident in Siberia which had caused an unexplained massive explosion in the area. But in fact, it was actually a crashed alien spaceship that was found to be the real cause, and soon the Russian KGB were building highly advanced weaponry from this other-wordly technology discovered on subsequent expeditions there in the following years. However, it somehow caused those in charge to go completely mad as a result, and a conquest of Europe soon ensued. But one of the engineers went AWOL from the program and soon created his own super mech to battle head-to-head against theirs, in order to halt the unfolding chaos. Fantastic stuff, and it soon had me excited to give this game a try as I wanted to see how impressive this alien technology really was. Suffice to say, I was not at all disappointed!

Strike Suit Infinity
Strike Suit Infinity is a rare hybrid of two rather retro game formulas: the 90’s style space sim (of the likes of Wing Commander) and the arcade games that came before that, where the only thing that mattered was getting the highest score. There’s no story to speak of: you fend off wave after wave of increasingly difficult enemies until you lose.
The game is very much designed with replayability in mind, with any given round being completely different depending on your setup and choice of reinforcements. While you’ll always personally do the lion’s share of the work, having your own fighter and bomber wings and capital ships on the field makes each round feel like a spectacular space battle, particularly in the later levels where you might have small fleets facing off against each other.

Strike Suit Zero, but as an arcade shooter.
I loved Strike Suit Zero; an awesome shooter with a competent plot and fantastic environments that were nothing more than an image on a background with space debris strewn about, yet still managed to look beautiful. One of the greatest things about Strike Suit was the variety in its missions and the power inherent in the Strike Suit that allowed you to overcome if done properly. You felt overwhelmed at times whilst having an overwhelmingly powerful machine that needed to be rationed in its use.

B.A.D Battle Armor Division
This is a great game… I have GIgantic Army and Steel Strider which have better reviews so I purchased them first. I wish I had gone with my gut and got this one first. This game is so much better than those and it has a mixed review… Dont listen to the negative reviews. This is a fun game thats totally worth the price. There may be a few odd things about the menu but the game itself plays great. The limited ammo makes for awesome desperate battles, The missions are cool and have a few cool game types. the zero gravity levels are a blast…. Complaints about locking your weapon position are silly. Having an unbreakable shield and being able to fire while your shield is up offsets not being able to lock your weapon position. Enough different weapons to add replay value and the controles can be completley adjusted to your liking in the steam controller configuration… Of the side scrolling old school cybernator games available on steam this is the best. get it!

BATTLE ARMOR DIVISION is an action platform/shooter that features a sci-fi storyline where a new global war rages within mankind.
Military forces rely upon modern technologies including the use of mechanical humanoid tanks, mechs, called BATTLE ARMOR.
The game as may easily guessed pays a lot of homage to great glories of this kind like A.S. LEYNOS and Valken, for example, as well some anime references.
Quick overview:
Gameplay
16 missions within different environment and approach (like D-Day style missions) ensure variety, and the games plays quite different while in zeroG. Avoiding bullets, using the shields or approaching with a bit of attention using smoke grenades or chaffs for missiles while shooting/jumping/running is fun once you get good with the controls.

Explosionade
Explosionade, reminds me of the games of the 90’s, simple, but nice and fun!
Considering the low price, and a must to buy with your eyes closed!

If mommy has a selection of best games, it needs to get tried - and I’ve got to play the crazy platformer called Explosionade made by Mommy’s Best Games.
The visual style is not serious at all, it’s kind of silly sci-fi/alien environment where you are piloting a mech, killing aliens and getting to the exit. The controls felt really tight (played on Xbox 360 Controller) and I really liked it, considering more possible ways to deal with enemies - aggressive grenade rushes or defensive tactics with shield.

Mecha Destruction
Mecha Destruction - (Beta) is a game where you do exactly what you’d expect - Destroy everything with a giant robot.
You can customize your Mecha to your liking and make it suit your personality or resemble your favorite characters from popular culture.
Then, simply take your Mech and wreak havoc with dynamic building destruction physics and all the fire, rubble and wreckage you could hope for!
Additionally, a simple graphics style allows for great performance and colorful personality in the world.
This game is currently in beta form and is an ongoing project. Currently, there is a single map, many different modifiable mechs and a military dispatched to stop you. Soon to come are a full campaign and story with Kaiju fights and an online Multiplayer mode.
Metal Golem: First Contact
I’m having plenty of fun with it. It’s a solid little arena shooter.
I do have a few small gripes. No crosshair is a little rough. The fact that your mech remains in the last direction it MOVED vs where you point the camera. So you shoot off screen sometimes. Neither of those are bad, as you get used to where your shooting and if you just TAP forward your mech instantly faces the right way. So small, SMALL complaints that didn’t actually prevent me from enjoying myself.
I look forward to more of the game, and I hope this dev gets some support to grow. Could be awesome one day.
