Raiden Legacy - Steam Edition

Raiden Legacy - Steam Edition

I rate Raiden Legacy 4/5. Good. Works well now.

EDIT: I’ve learned more about what these games were originally supposed to be like. Now I rate Raiden Legacy 3/5. OK. But it is still the only collection of these Raiden games available on Steam and when coupled with the frame rate fix linked below, Raiden Legacy has the potential to be a good game.

The overall negative rating of this game collection appears to no longer be justified. I encountered no issues involving stuttering. Indeed, I have encountered no major bugs of any kind.

Well, when it comes to Arcade, Shoot’Em Up & Shooter genre, Raiden series is surely one of the well known games. And for this one, Raiden Legacy, is a good compilation of 4 in 1 collection. It has all the memorable classic games back in the old days, only with slightly changes of here and there. So, let’s check it out!

The Gameplay

Like any other Shoot’Em Up & Shooter games, the gameplay mechanic is simple and straightforward, shooting & bombing. It’s as they say, shoot on sight! There’s no complexity of button combinations to execute certain kill shots or need any rocket science brain to figure out how to play. It’s just that easy.

Double Dragon Trilogy

Double Dragon Trilogy

At this point in the history of the franchise, you either “get” Double Dragon, or you don’t. This is a side-scrolling beat-em-up in it’s purest and simplest form. You can punch, kick, jump, jump kick, and do a scant few other moves. The enemies you’ll face all have personality, but it’s of the behavior-based variety. The game is challenging, particularly on the Original and Expert difficulties, but can be finished in a short amount of time… even shorter if you become particularly skilled at the game and the nuances in it’s play.

In theory this collection should be a great experience. That’s what I thought when I booted it up. As soon as I tried to adjust the resolution, the game proceeded to crash, forced me to verify files and turn off my virus protection as a content lock occured.

Once I got it back up and running with controls set comfortably on my 360 pad, it worked well. Well enough for what feels like a lazy attempt to wrap three arcade roms into a stand-alone executable.

The Time and Score text overlay is really weird and doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the visuals. The options feel kind of barebones, there’s no intro videos or explanations or anything for any of the games, nothing. People coming into this without knowing about the games will have no idea that you can do super moves, like hitting punch and jump together in DD1 for the game-breaking backwards elbow. Or how DD2’s controls are odd. Or how you can flipping run in DD3 by double tapping move (the previous two games didn’t have it, so unless you did this by accident how would you know?).

UBERMOSH:BLACK

UBERMOSH:BLACK

UBERMOSH:BLACK is the second game in the UBERMOSH series, which is a fast paced cyberpunk bullet-hell upon which you can slaughter waves of enemies through either shooting, slicing or deflecting for as long as you can. My review for this will be very similar to my review on the first game

Pros:

-Gameplay is still smooth and fast, along with different classes which you can select and master to obtain the best score in each class. The new ability called Brainclap which was introduced in this game is a great addition

I completed Ubermosh:Santicide the hard way and was totally in the mood for some more mosh. Next, I checked some older titles, and found Ubermosh:Black. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it. First and foremost, I have technical issues with this installment. When the Brainclap fires off the game freezes for up to 30 seconds and may or may not crash afterwards - which makes it basically unplayable for me (See discussion: https://steamcommunity.com/app/444940/discussions/0/1640915206497670064/ ). Second, this is a 2016 game and it did not age so well. I hate the limited field of view, and the low resolution. But what I hate most about this game (apart from the technical glitches) is the fact that I get stuck in those stupid rocks within the playfield all the time. This cannot be a new thing and it I wonder why it has not been ironed out. puzzled

Cecil Run

Cecil Run

Cecil Run is a Unity asset flip for a basic 2D retro pixel endless runner/platformer. Usually asset flips are really sufficient reason for any game to be classified immediately as a cheap nasty cash grab (and there’s no exception here), but there’s more, and it’s worse.

The “developer” decided to try cash in on the despicable acts conducted by Walter Palmer, disgraced American dentist, who tracked and killed a beloved wild Lion from a national park in Zimbabwe, by luring it from the park then shooting him. This horrific act is appalling, and I’m only relating it to provide context for this awful game. The developer making a sick joke of an atrocity is completely reprehensible, featuring Cecil and the disgraced dentist, Palmer, in the game. Imagine doing that just for a nasty cash grab on Steam.

Asset flip apparently, so obviously dont' recommend it.

If the game dev were donating the proceeds of the game as part of “the message” he is trying to make with the game then maybe that’d get a pass, but as far as I’m aware this is still just a cash grab.

Music and sound affects are cool though.

Iridion 3D

Iridion 3D

I purchased this game merely due to nostalgia for arcade super scrollers like galaxy force 2 and it turned out to be a pretty fun game, but warning for potential buyers is that this is a straight up GBA port with nothing new added and looks kind of blurry all blow up on a big screen. One more knock against the game is the fact there is no ability to save and you have to rely on passwords. The game still is a fun arcade shooter, but don’t expect anything close to a remaster.

I honestly never expected to see this game on steam. Iridion 3D is one of my favorite games of all time. The game is a launch title for the Game Boy Advance, which is something to keep in mind about this game. The game uses a pseudo 3D effect in order to create a unique Shmup game that i have never seen an attempt to replicate the style of. While the pseudo 3D style can be very akward at first, if you are able to adapt, the game is a very fun, while short game. While some may feel the fact the game is short is a flaw, i find it adds to the ease of picking up the game for a quick playthrough. As a launch title for the GBA, the game has some audio oddities, along with issues due to developers still learning the limitations of the platform. all in all, if you can get past the flaws and get used to the pseudo 3D style, it is a very fun game.

Fun shooting game with interesting visuals originally on the Gameboy advance. While I recommend the game let it be known that it is a very straight forward port with little to no changes. The control scheme is a bit counter intuitive if you are playing on an Arcade stick so rebinding through steam is likely a good idea for most.

I still recommend the title and it is especially impressive given the time and hardware for which it was originally released. I do have a CRT monitor to play games like this so that does a long way in making the visuals pop. As mentioned in a negative review it would likely scale rather poorly to higher resolutions on lcd monitors.

UBERMOSH Vol.3

UBERMOSH Vol.3

The short version: This is fun for the price, but you are getting what you pay for at $1 or less. Don’t expect much more than that.

–-

Note: There’s currently 8 games in the Ubermosh series and since they all share enough in common with each other, I’m writing one review for the series and then copy & pasting it to all of them.

What it is:

A pixel art combat arena with rogue-like arcade design and a focus on a simple combat gimmick that is easy to learn but difficult to master. Each replay is expected to be just a few minutes long, die and repeat. Taken for what it is, this is a few fast paced minutes of fun that you can pick up and play as a break.

(A lot of this review will be identical to the original UBERMOSH because the two games are VERY similar).

Just like the original UBERMOSH, Vol.3 is comparable to a top-down Devil Daggers: You appear in an arena and are tasked with surviving 90 seconds of relentless onslaught. 90 seconds isn’t much, right? And all of the enemies die in a single hit–how hard could this possibly be?

As it turns out, hard as ♥♥♥♥ing nails. Set to a thrumming metal and techno soundtrack (which is still easily one of the best things about the UBERMOSH series), you will die again and again and again. Fortunately the game subscribes to Edmund McMillen’s “Super Meat Boy” model, wherein dying happens quickly and restarts are virtually instantaneous. This game doesn’t want to waste your time–it just wants 90 seconds.

TTV3

TTV3

Being very similar to TTV2, my review seeks to identify the differences in TTV3, and decide if they’re compelling enough.

| TTV2 | TTV3 |

| Slow, methodical movement | Fast, quick movement |

| Moderate number of maps | More maps, but still moderate |

| Varied start points on maps | A stationary start point on maps |

Real player with 2.1 hrs in game

TTV3 is MUCH more challenging than its predecessors (this is a good thing, I definitely still have hair). Aside from there being more things going on, everything is faster; including you. This will lead to many frustrating deaths stemming from holding a direction key too long and running face-first into an obstacle, or stopping just shy of the exit because your afraid of the former. That being said, if the first two gave you anxiety, this one will bring it so bad your blood will start hurting.

3/3 100%’d, though I can’t claim to want a fourth. It takes a toll.

Of the Ubermosh series this is the (at the moment)

last and best part (imo).

While there are a few little things that could be better:

-No options menu (if I didn’t have a mouse with a dpi-switch I would have a problem)

-The top and bottom of the screen are still dangerous, because the enemies are much closer than the left & right side of the screen when they show up.

-You can’t choose which weapon to pick up which leads to dodging all the guns that are lying on the ground in the early game. (after getting one of course)

UPDATE: Okay, so we find out some more information from this developer. And I was wrong with linking the asset kit I thought he directly flipped as the bricks and paddle are EXACTLY THE SAME SPRITES.

Still, if he only used sprites in a Game Maker game that he coded himself, then technically, this IS NOT A DIRECT ASSET FLIP. So I apologize for that incorrect information.

However, in my video and believe I stated that the free asset kit on Unity probably played and worked better than what he was selling here on Steam. And I hold by that because THIS GAME HE MADE WITH THE FREE ASSETS PLAYS TERRIBLY WITH LAGGY COLLISIONS AND GAMEPLAY THAT IS NOT SMOOTH OR FUN.
