Adventure Minesweeper

Adventure Minesweeper

Mixed recommendation. It’s casual minesweeper-style game, with several, fixable issues.

Imagine Minesweeper, except instead of mouse, you walk on the map and turn tiles. Turning a mine will result in a health-loss. Also, there are stones (impreachable points) and food (healing). Find all non-mine spots and you find the exit.

That’s Adventure Minesweeper as a concept and in a nutshell.

Does it work?

Idea is actually alright. It introduces some deviations from the regular Minesweeper tactics.

Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate

Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate

Intro: I want to preface this by saying that I don’t think Shiren is a fair game, or that this is an amazing port of Shiren.

However as a roguelike enthusiast I personally enjoy this game a lot. And I think that this is fairly competent port. It has borderless windowed mode with the ability to resize to whatever you want or need and has multiple control options (no rebinding outside of using Steam’s controller configurator though). There’s also some hidden controls so you might want to just press keys to see what they do, for example the game doesn’t tell you that the C key can be used for quick scouting a room without needing to go through the menu.

Shiren is not a roguelike, it’s a grinding game

I had heard good things about the serie of games “Shiren the Wanderer” in the past, and I’ve always been a fan of roguelikes, so when this newest instalment was ported on Steam, I thought it would be a good idea to try it out, and get my first taste of this “roguelike serie”.

Unfortunately, it soon became clear that the game is not at all what it says on the box.

Shiren is not a roguelike

A run of Shiren makes you starts at level 1 and you’re tasked with climbing up a randomly generated dungeon (the titular Tower of Fortune). It is played turn-by-turn, so you’re supposed to think before you act, in order to escape the various traps and monsters that you’re gonna meet, using your wits and your inventory. If you’re not good enough, you will die, be ejected from the tower, and lose everything, thus being forced to start again from the very beginning. This description, at first, would indeed seems to fit the mold of a roguelike, so very much something I would enjoy playing.

One Way Heroics

One Way Heroics

It’s been a while since I’ve played the base game, so this review might contain some bits from the DLC.

First of all, this game is a relatively simple roguelike with a twist: the world is constantly being consumed from the left, forcing the player to continue moving to the right. The base objective for winning is to defeat the Demon Lord, who will generally pop up to fight you after certain amounts of time has elapsed and retreat in a bit if neither is dead. There’s a couple of other winning conditions available, but it’s definitely a spoiler. The Plus DLC adds some alternate campaigns to fighting the Demon Lord, which increases the winning conditions even more.

So, I bought this game a long time ago thinking it was going to be a game where I ran in one direction trying to stay alive.

I was not disappointed in the slightest.

One-way Heroics offers some of the dumbest, funniest, and rediculous gameplay I have ever seen from a rouge-like game.

Slight spoilers below, you have been warned

-Hey, I know you’re new, but you’re supposed to save the world from the left side of the screen since this is sidescrolling and all, and for some reason the left side of the screen is eating everything. GOOD LUCK!

Labyrinth of the Witch

Labyrinth of the Witch

Labyrinth of the Witch is a simple roguelite/dungeon explorer game originally for Android/iOS that was ported to PC. This paid version has all of the characters that you would’ve needed to purchase, and has no microtransactions or other mobile shenanigans.

Positives:

  • Simple and easy to learn. The “Puzzle Dungeons” are a fun and interesting way to learn all of the mechanics of the game.

  • Cute and colourful pixel art

  • Addicting gameplay

Negatives:

  • Repetitive music. What little music is here is decent, but gets repetitive really fast. I ended up muting it after half an hour.

Labyrinth of the Witch is a simplified dungeon crawler like DragonFangZ with a cute art style. It removes the frustrating aspects while keeping the randomness and challenge! 7/10

After playing this game for quite a bit, I’ve got to say it’s quite enjoyable. Definitely a roguelike (not a fake, free-roaming one, but an actual turn-based, punishing, strategize before-hand one), and an enjoyable one at that. Don’t expect to walk in and start killing everything, because chances are if you’re new to the genre (or even a bit experienced like myself), you’ll still die a dozen times before you get the hang of it. Learning it is easy enough; mastering it is quite difficult. One of the things I really enjoyed was having dungeons created based off the files I chose from my folder.

I truly want to enjoy this game, but the lack of guidance is concerning. As this is an early access game, it is understandable if a lot of the features or the UI is incomplete, but there is a lot of things that is missing from the game to actually guide the player.

Now, I am not asking for the game to become a linear, hand holding game that it will never be. It’s not in the style of the game, but the game itself doesn’t provide any assistance with complex actions such as quests and crafting. It would be more likely that I end up never completing a quest or crafting an item.

The World is Your Weapon

The World is Your Weapon

Story & Dialogue

The story is fairly simple, since it’s mainly about a weapon merchant, Weaco, trying to find a legendary sword due to her love of weaponry. The closest thing it has to an aesop is the third ending, where Weaco has to consider what needs to be done in a peaceful world where the antagonist is defeated, which is something that not all stories address properly. The simplicity doesn’t hurt the game too much, since it seems to be mostly focused on humor and gameplay, though I wish there were more quests and lore associated with the bosses of the game.

I don’t normally enjoy games made from RPGMaker, but I enjoyed this one more than I could have expected. I ran into it randomly while browsing, watched the trailer, laughed, and bought it without hesitation. This game has made me laugh like an idiot many times, and it’s also a lot of fun.

I recommend you avoid reading other reviews so you don’t spoil some of the surprises, but let’s just say you can pick up anything…ANYTHING…and use it as a weapon. You can even huck it in your enemy’s face.

Experienced a glitch that made me immortal (life never went down at all) after playing the game for a few hours…I went through the entire game and hit a wall…the end of a level just a few into the quest that claimed the game was still being developed and more content would be added (then it ended) .it was fun, but this glitch revealed there isn’t much content or point in unlocking the other characters if that’s all the game IS so far…I’m looking forward to not being immortal and having way more game content to experience before playing it anymore…
