Disgaea PC

Note: If you’re able to, get “Disgaea 1 Complete” on the PS4 or Nintendo Switch instead. Since that one has remastered sprites & additional features which will make your experience much more enjoyable, also includes additional characters.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a fascination with numbers going up. Seeing small numbers turn to big numbers is something I absolutely love in video games, and Disgaea is the perfect game for this. They go overkill with numbers. Personally I never write reviews, but I have to for an amazing game like this. I’ve gotten every single achievement for this game so I believe I have a good idea of everything this game contains.

As of the moment I’ve never completed this game to the end. When I do - and I’m sure eventually I will as I do enjoy it - I’ll probably redo this review. But for the time being it has left me with an impression.

I won’t spoil anything in detail.

My look into Disgaea

You basically take control of a trio of protagonists in this game. Laharl (prince of the underworld), Etna (one of the prince’s demon vassals), and Flonne (an angel). The basic jist of the story is Laharl spends his time in the game exerting how awesome he is by winning fights - which is pretty accurate to how the player themself probably feels as well. The other two protagonists mostly spend their time trying to bring about a softer side to the prince. There are a ton of plot holes throughout the game’s story but I don’t feel they matter since the game never tries to take itself seriously. It’s always cute, silly, or badass. Things as random as having to fight the Power Rangers takes place in this game after all. It’s never really serious - at least not as far as I’ve gotten.

Falnarion Tactics

Falnarion Tactics

Still very early in the game but I quite like it thus far, have never had the ability to play any Fire Emblem games but love watching/reading LP’s of them so running across this had me very interested. Overall it seems to be a pretty faithful FE style of game, though it does have some annoying bits.

I think my biggest worry is the low durability on healing items, makes sense for the cure root but really wish the healing staffs had maybe 10 uses instead of 3. The weapons at least have good numbers of uses. I’m sure the healing issue alleviates some as the game progresses though and the heroes grow stronger (my Felm is already quite Tanky which is nice to see in the Lord character)

In some ways, Falnarion Tactics feels like the most modern and fully-featured SRPG Studio game I’ve yet played, but its maps packed full of dozens upon dozens of enemies, often standing shoulder to shoulder, often opposing just as many NPC allies of yours, combined with a questionable story and very strange balance decisions, made it actually the least fun commercial one I’ve yet played.

On the bright side, it makes use of more SRPG Studio features than most, with a huge variety of equipment, two currencies, one of which can be used to buy levels for characters directly, a lot of side missions that you can do in between story missions, and a huge variety of playable characters. It’s also by far the longest SRPG Studio game I’ve played, with Steam saying I spent 22 hours on it, and my final save file time being just under 15 hours.

Disgaea 2 PC

With the recent release of Disgaea 4 on PC I figured it was time to offer my own thoughts on the ones I’ve played since this series is one I’ve come to enjoy a lot over the past couple of years. With that said having given the first game a review a while ago it only made sense to give one to the second one as well. So what are my thoughts on this game and should you play it considering that 4 & 5 are already available? Well time for me to talk and find out.

So as you start up a new file for the first time, just like in the first game, you’re given a voiceover explaining the current situation. An evil Overlord known as Zenon has corrupted the land of Veldime. A once peaceful world, Zenon’s influence has corrupted all human life, slowly turning them into demons and robbing them of not only their humanity but memories as well. All except for one young man, Adell. In an attempt to undo the mess caused by the God of All Overlords, performs a ritual to summon the all-powerful demon……..only to mess that up and INSTEAD summon his one and only daughter Rozalin. Furious over essentially being kidnapped, she demands our battle loving, firey red haired hero to escort her back. From there it’s up to the two to find Zenon and have whatever happen, well happen. Of course being a Disgaea game, lots of wacky antics and comedy filled turns occur along the way. Which is to be expected but I’d say that the story is a bit more on the serious side. Like the first game it has a healthy amount of comedy injected into its story beats but it early on it has a set goal for our protagonists and for the most part what you do in each “Episode” has something related to either developing our cast or working towards that end goal “Find Zenon”. It’s a fine enough story on its own and gets the job done even if its nothing outstanding. The comedy helps liven things up a bit and i did chuckle at some of the jokes and humor even if I felt like the cast overall wasn’t as good as the two trios from the first game and that the story didn’t have the emotional impact the first one had either. Kind of a shame but it’s certainly not a terrible story either, even by the standards of this series.

Remember, “Your Mileage May Vary” in regards to this port, but I believe that this time around performance is way better on launch than Disgaea PC was. Great job NISA!

TL;DR: I wholeheartedly recommend Disgaea 2 PC for $20, especially if you’ve played Disgaea PC. (Buy it so we can get future Disgaea games on PC :D)

–———————-

Let’s get introductions out of the way first, dood:

Disgaea 2 PC is a port of the PSP remake of Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, called Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. (Lots of confusing names thrown around, I apologize! Basically: PS2 - Cursed Memories PSP - Dark Hero Days PC - Disgaea 2 PC) Disgaea 2 PC is much more of the gameplay from Disgaea PC, but improved.

Oh? You didn’t want me to hear me talk about this game? You want me to talk about Pokemon? Can that wait until the end please? Thank you.

Little Town Hero is Game Freak’s recent outing from their “Gear Project” system. Mixing the strategy from both card and board games, Little Town Hero offers a very unique RPG experience. Even as someone who loves the game on the Switch, I can only recommend it with caution because of the battle system. If you’re into card and board games that’s long and has loads of strategy, then you can jump right in, otherwise stay away from it. The lack of a free demo doesn’t help either because this is a game that sorely needed it. As of this writing there’s an issue with the pricing for certain regions, so don’t spend over 30 bucks for this until this is fixed. I even feel that the price is really steep, topping on this being a divisive title is a gamble.

Its such a wonderful game to play! In terms of other reviews issues I haven’t really ran into them aside from the intro being unskippable and start on a small screen but, fixable with options in the main menu. I love the music and mechanics of little town hero and the amount strategy needed when playing in hard mode!

Phantom Brave PC

Phantom Brave PC

Phantom Brave is about a little girl and her phantom earning money and living their lives on an island whilst encountering all sorts of characters and an over-arching plot that ties itself together towards the end. In other words, this game follows the “slice-of-life” set-up; here are your characters, here is your setting–watch them live their lives. Its one of those, “this could be an anime” type games, and its introduction of tropes and characters makes it very effective.

The general format is the same as the developer’s Disgaea titles: you get an episode, a cutscene, a map is unlocked to play, a cutscene, another map to play, repeat until the episode ends whereby a new episode proceeds. There are a little close to 21 episodes in the game, so you definitely get your moneys worth. Because the format is pretty simple you always have points where you can save and drop the game off before coming back to it. And I can appreciate that.

I love this game. Fantastic SRPG right here.

It’s got a nice story, memorable characters, fun and unique gameplay, awesome music, and an all-around nice aesthetic with gorgeous sprites. Phantom Brave is seriously a hidden gem. It’s one of Nippon Ichi’s lesser known games, but it’s a fun and unique experience that people are missing out on. Even though the game’s been released effectively 5 times (on PS2, Wii, PSP, PC, and now Switch), it’s still a pretty obscure title that not many talk about. I highly recommend it! I’ll go more in depth about what I love about it below for if you want to read a longer review.

Maybe your team needs an Outlaw, a rockstar gunslinger who can’t stop dishing out damage? Or a Crusader, a bulky knight-officer who shields your team from harm with the power of THE LAW? Or a blasphemous Heretic, who dares to use their magic to protect instead of fight? These character classes and more await you in the world of Forever and Ever!

Guide these heroes into battle, and soon they’ll discover Secret Techniques: modifications and additions to their original abilities to expand your tactical options. Develop a fierce warband that fights with your personal flair!

Throughout their journey, heroes develop bonds and relationships that strengthen over time. These bonds show their true power in heroes’ most dire moments, and can save them from certain death. A Crusader and a Punk, once enemies on opposite sides of the law, now fierce comrades, push each other to fight beyond their mortal limits. An Exorcist shouts a word of warning to her wife, letting her dodge a deadly blow at the last moment. A Hermit heals his rival from the brink of death, and friendship begins to replace their antagonistic feelings. What story will you and your heroes tell?

Valkyria Chronicles 4 Complete Edition

Valkyria Chronicles 4 Complete Edition

Quick Summary

Valkyria Chronicles 4 (VC4) is a turn-based strategy jrpg where you command units in third-person mode. It is a great war story with amazing, charismatic, and memorable characters. It is a difficult game and the harder missions will require thinking, planning, and some trial and error. An easy mode is available, but planning will still be required.

Pros

  • Awesome characters

  • Great voice acting

  • Harder missions require a lot of strategy if that is what you are looking for

Stepping into the shoes of yet another soft-spoken armour commander, we are offered a surprisingly deep journey as the story progresses from carefree summer skirmishes to a gruelling and brutal war campaign of attrition with all the sacrifices and tribulations it entails.

For those who played the first the game, Valkyria Chronicles 4 will offer a greatly improved gameplay experience, class balance tweaks as well as a selection of fantastic mission maps and a surprisingly deep story with an extra treat of small episodes that reveal deeper personalities and motivations of your squadmates. It might sound trite, but that is how one can learn to look past superficial appearances and learn to connect with fellow human beings on a personal level. Emmy Mistral’s penny pincher trait used to be infuriating until one learns he compulsive saving is driven by

! desire to save up as much money as possible since her mother is sick. With numerous examples like these, it becomes easy to see how a lot of reflections offered by the game are transferable to the real world.

Agarest: Generations of War Zero

Agarest: Generations of War Zero

Agarest: Generation of War Zero is a prequel the Agarest: Generation of war game that came out back in the 2007. If you played the other agarest series you know what you’re going into but if you haven’t well lets just say it’s gonna be pretty interesting. Now onto the breakdows:

The Pros

(+) Tons of skills combination to choose from

This is self-explanatory I think. As you progress the story and complete side quest you will unlock more skills to improve you’re party. Always check the estorica book for combination list. Don’t just throw random skills in each character. If you do that you won’t survive the end game.

Real player with 180.3 hrs in game

As with the Origional, Zero is a true work of art. The Generation system is vastly improved from the original, and the affection system adds its own level of stratagy. The gameplay, while at first glance appears simple, is, in a word, “Multi-Layered”. Mastering Esoterica and Combination arts is key to not only surviving some of the most difficult battles, but also recieving some of the best items in the game. With that in mind, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Agarest Wiki that contains truely invaluable information on the game itself.

Guardians of Greenheart

Guardians of Greenheart

I am appreciated for the high-difficult enemy that required careful planning to ensure victory with minimum cost. The art is beautiful and the story is straight to the point.

However, over the first hour of my playtime, the grinding has became too much. In the very first battle, you will be pitch against a big bad enemy that can one-shot (in which it did) your character should you had not debuff them. Beating that big bad was hard, but that okay, no problems.

However, when that very same kind of big bad which would reappeared in the next dozens of battles, the game became too much monotone and boring, for by the 3rd battle, you have already mastered what combo should you use.

Noire plays the protagonist with the backstory as the leader of a nation of power, gaining surrounding territory under it’s banner, and warring with other nations that as well are warring with other nations.

The game establishes/hints that this is not the original world Gamindustri but Gamarket, the CPU’s have never met outside a battlefield, and the main antagonist had yet to make herself known.

The story takes a turn where Noire’s good intentions lead the world into chaos, following a strangers advice to make a wish on a Sharacite rock to unite the world which

Best girl in the game = best game?

Highly anticipated by some, though not everyone. Here’s the second Neptunia spin-off featuring the lovely tsundere goddess Noire. Is the game worthy of having her name in the title? Well…

The game already came out a year ago on PS Vita with mixed reviews at the time, and for good reasons too. Now it’s time to see how well it does on PC.

The Positive

  • Noire is the protagonist this time around. The game’s setting - an alternate universe, with Noire’s city being the center of attention.
