  • Challenging.

  • Tons of management/upgrade options.

Cons

  • Matches can take a long time. (not necessarily a con)

Summary

It maintains by having a lasting appeal with a diverse set of memorable and unique characters, a satisfyingly emotional and well thought out story with simple, yet strategic gameplay that offers freedom through various tactics. Despite all of this, there are certainly questionable flaws, yet they’re completely smothered with the games overarching enjoyment and charm which ultimately pushes the game in a familiar but fresh direction.

Story

Valkyria Chronicles takes place in a fantasy setting similar to Earth which introduces the story with two waging superpowers, the autocratic East Europan Imperial Alliance and the loosely-united democracies of the Atlantic federation. This engagement is known as the EW2 or the Second Europan War. Both powers are reliant on a resource called Ragnite which fuels and controls both factions economies. Overtime, the Ragnite lessened and became more scarce causing the Empire to declare war against the Federation, sparking the EW2.

Quick Summary

Valkyria Chronicles 4 (VC4) is a turn-based strategy jrpg where you command units in third-person mode. It is a great war story with amazing, charismatic, and memorable characters. It is a difficult game and the harder missions will require thinking, planning, and some trial and error. An easy mode is available, but planning will still be required.

Pros

  • Awesome characters

  • Great voice acting

  • Harder missions require a lot of strategy if that is what you are looking for

Stepping into the shoes of yet another soft-spoken armour commander, we are offered a surprisingly deep journey as the story progresses from carefree summer skirmishes to a gruelling and brutal war campaign of attrition with all the sacrifices and tribulations it entails.

For those who played the first the game, Valkyria Chronicles 4 will offer a greatly improved gameplay experience, class balance tweaks as well as a selection of fantastic mission maps and a surprisingly deep story with an extra treat of small episodes that reveal deeper personalities and motivations of your squadmates. It might sound trite, but that is how one can learn to look past superficial appearances and learn to connect with fellow human beings on a personal level. Emmy Mistral’s penny pincher trait used to be infuriating until one learns he compulsive saving is driven by

! desire to save up as much money as possible since her mother is sick. With numerous examples like these, it becomes easy to see how a lot of reflections offered by the game are transferable to the real world.

Metal Waltz: Anime tank girls

Metal Waltz: Anime tank girls

One of my favorite character collection games. I’ve played Metal Waltz for over 8 months, longer than all but one online game I’ve played recently.

Metal Waltz is remarkable among free-to-play game in that it is one of a few games that are TRULLY free to play. Unlike many other free-to-play games, that require you to pay real money (or grind premium currency for months, or get insanely lucky) to get top characters, all characters in Metal Waltz are obtainable without need to spend real money. Paying can notably speed up your progress in this game, but unlike many other games, won’t instantly grant you access to top characters. But it doesn’t mean that Metal Waltz is easier to play for free than other free-to-play games, in fact, both free and paying players will have to grind for many months to reach top content.

INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY AND ITS FUTURE

Introduction

1. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.

Not exactly a fun game. You have some choices, but after a few runs, once you have everything unlocked for that character and need to do the last 4 of your 8 runs (probably in easy mode), it gets tedious to pick the choices. The item warehouse thing doesn’t save between runs, so if you have an item that you’d rather not have active, you have to deactivate it every run. Many characters have penalties on their last item (one character does not have any penalties, one has a penalty on a lower difficulty item). This isn’t a big penalty for most once you have everything unlocked anyways, but still something to consider.

This is a great game for anyone who wants to take up a challenge. I’ve had this game in my library for like 2 years and never bothered to play it till now, but now that I’ve played it, I can say it’s genuinely fun, though it’s probably because I haven’t played any other game like this. It’s very sad to see such a good game get such bad reviews and I’d like to say to the people who see this game that you should give it a try if you have the chance and money.

The gameplay in the game is relatively simple once you get used to it, you just level up skills and wait to see what the RNG gods decide to do to you. Normal is a very simple difficulty to start on and is almost impossible to fail, but once you get up to hard and hell mode, you will start having difficulty managing all of your resources correctly. That’s when you start having fun though, since hard mode and hell mode are actually hard not because of challenging mechanics and what-not, it’s because of the RNG. Once you start getting good runs and actually passing the modes, you gain a sense of satisfaction hitting the S rank with each character. Another fun part of the game is each character. Depending on which character you choose, their skill set and different tattoos will greatly effect the gameplay. What’s enjoyable about the different characters are how each have their own unique play style and how if you’re going for achievements, you will have a different experience every time.

Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault

Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault

I love this game, it’s a great and fun spin on tower defense and it kills me to have to leave it negative review, however Aksys leaves me little choice. They have a dead/unmonitored fake customer support email that as of this review has been nearly 1 and a half months since I requested help and if they were aware of the PC issues of this port,to get absolutely no response whatsoever.

I contacted Steam to get a try to flush your cache etc. did all that still no fix, steams final answer, “we apologize but since valve didn’t make it there’s nothing we can do.”

Wow, just WOW. This game is somewhat of a hidden gem in my opinion. Aegis of Earth is a tower defense game originally made on the PS2. And rereleased onto Steam. I never played the original so I can’t render an opinion on it, but overall I would assume nothing has changed. The entire point of the game is to defend your cities from these giant creatures called the Protonovus, but everyone just calls them ‘the enemy’.

As the game progresses you get more cities and more command units to control (up to 3 of each of the 6 types) that you need to rotate between. But the games biggest bonus is in fact the dialogue. This game has one of the best scripts that I’ve seen in a while, and a surprise twist at the end so big even I didn’t see it coming that well. The ending itsself is a bit lackluster, and some questions remain unanswered but the story itsself is easily grade A material… Except during the end of the game where you have to make a Large powerplant in all 5 cities requiring 5 colorless crystals and then some which honestly takes a bit too long to accomplish I was stuck on that portion for over 2 days.

Eiyu*Senki – The World Conquest

Eiyu*Senki – The World Conquest

Let’s just get this out of the way… yes, this game contains anime tiddies. Lots of them, even, and assuming you spring for the ‘Director’s Cut’ patch from the developer’s website, they’re even uncensored! But the thing is, this game would be thoroughly worth picking up even WITHOUT the anime tiddies, so I will be reviewing it as if it didn’t. Cool? Cool.

You ever thought about conquering the world? Don’t lie. Most everyone does, as some point. Games like Civilization offers you a chance to do it, too, and in a fairly realistic way at that. Well, this game throws ‘realistic’ out the window and instead drops you into a fantastic world somewhere in the middle of a big ball of timey-wimey stuff, where every nation is led by a handful of legendary heroes and rulers from throughout its history. Start by unifying the warring states of Japan under your benevolent rule - something that has taken up entire games on its own, but in this case basically serves as the tutorial - and then go from there, expanding your reach across the world-map as you strengthen your economy and recruit legendary heroes to your side. The fact that the various characters you encounter lived centuries or even millennia apart matters not at all!

I will start by saying this is the first long review I have ever written. I am not the kind of person that only plays JRPGS or dating sims so I might be a better voice for those that aren’t otakus but let us get right into the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • This game is huge in content

  • The battle system is great, not complicated but challenging enough

  • For anyone that likes Anime this game features most things they will enjoy, all from Waifus, music to epic name-calling attacks

  • Not all characters are just “sex” (even though I’ve heard about the gold and uncensored version)

Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart (Neptunia)

Story.

Noire plays the protagonist with the backstory as the leader of a nation of power, gaining surrounding territory under it’s banner, and warring with other nations that as well are warring with other nations.

! Take all the things

The game establishes/hints that this is not the original world Gamindustri but Gamarket, the CPU’s have never met outside a battlefield, and the main antagonist had yet to make herself known.

The story takes a turn where Noire’s good intentions lead the world into chaos, following a strangers advice to make a wish on a Sharacite rock to unite the world which

! plothole somehow removes all the population of her city and replaces them with monsters.

Best girl in the game = best game?

Highly anticipated by some, though not everyone. Here’s the second Neptunia spin-off featuring the lovely tsundere goddess Noire. Is the game worthy of having her name in the title? Well…

The game already came out a year ago on PS Vita with mixed reviews at the time, and for good reasons too. Now it’s time to see how well it does on PC.

The Positive

  • Noire is the protagonist this time around. The game’s setting - an alternate universe, with Noire’s city being the center of attention.

Sunrider: Liberation Day - Captain’s Edition

Sunrider: Liberation Day - Captain’s Edition

Whelp, that was a fun ride. Quite a bit has changed from MoA and after playing through what is apparently now known as 1.0 (2.0 being a planned update that will rehash the story ending and bring back some lost MoA features) I can safely say that as a strategy RPG title, Sunrider stands loud and proud.

Our hull is holding! - The Great:

  • Alot of MoA’s clearly specialised ryder craft didn’t actually have alot of specialization behind them apart from raw stats. LD changes this a bit by giving your units a few upgraded and a few more completely new abilities that really set them apart from each other. Where as in MoA it didn’t reeeeaaaalllly bother me if a unit was knocked out of action, now in LD I can really feel the set back as I lose an entire front of strong counters for my recklessness in the form of a single loss.

Real player with 29.6 hrs in game

Well, this was…a thing. As the third game in the Sunrider “series”, Liberation Day has left me quite conflicted. The series as a whole has done much to transcend the boundaries of traditional visual novels, for better or worse. So it only makes sense that I write out another long-winded review for such a complicated game, right? Here goes…

Remember Mask of Arcadius? While classified as a VN, most of your time with this prequel was probably spent in the turn-based space battles. LD does the same thing, though the battles are more balanced and interesting. All of your crew from MoA is back and better than before, including new abilities and upgrades for a more diverse strategy (especially for Kryska, she’s great this time around!). To compensate, there are some interesting new enemies that require a bit more planning to manage effectively. Also, upgrades and purchases now have separate currencies, which makes customization significantly more interesting. Command points are now capped, but since you get them from each unit you defeat, you’re encouraged to use them more often, instead of merely accumulating them for the final missions. With everything factored together, I think the difficulty of LD is roughly the same as it was in MoA, as I alternated between Captain and Ensign difficulties depending on my patience. Now that it’s said and done, I think I had more fun with the battles in LD.

War of the Human Tanks

War of the Human Tanks

Battleships and chess with lolis.

Fantastic fun, interesting story with many twists and several endings, engaging gameplay that demands strategic thinking and an incredible soundtrack throughout.

The game’s story is told through visual novel format, which sets the state of affairs and the stage for the battle to follow. Battles are fought in real-time, but with a sort of turn-based system that runs on ticks, for example after giving a unit orders to move you must then wait for it to radio in asking for new orders before it can be moved again. Battlefields are presented as a grid of octagons, and before the round commences you must first place your units as in Battleships. Each unit has it’s own special properties and characteristics similar to chess, for example some may move 2 spaces at a time whereas others may only move 1, or one unit might only be able to attack horizontally whereas others must attack at least 2 spaces ahead of itself. The aim of each battle is to eliminate the opponent’s ‘Command Tank’ before they destroy yours which, regardless of how many units they have remaining, wins you the battle. The battlefield is covered by a shroud as seen in most real-time strategies with sight range varying between your different units, so early game tactics may usually consist of Battleships-esque artillery strikes into the dark hoping you’ll hit something, as your units gradually advance closer to the enemy, thinning out their ranks until their command tank is within firing range.

The first time I saw War of the Human Tanks, I was put off by how obviously low-budget it is; that was a huge mistake. Apparently, the art style just needed some getting used to, because once I got into it, I thought the graphics were actually pretty good. There’s full voice acting, fun animations and even some really catchy music that makes me itch to buy the soundtrack.

But what about the meat of the game? That, for me, comes in two packages (or perhaps Amasson boxes): the story and the gameplay. Let’s get this out of the way: The story is awesome. I loved it. This is definitely not a “skip-the-dialogue” kind of game; in fact, after a certain point, the story became the main appeal. It’s simultaneously lighthearted and grim, with a really interesting setting that ends up being much more detailed than you might suspect at first. There are four endings (two main paths, with two endings each) that all end up being pretty radically different and are all fantastic in their own way. I’m really in love with the setting, and all the little things you can learn about the rather disenfranchised battle-androids they call Human Tanks; the story really exceeded my expectations in every way. The translation is great, and the writing is clever, funny and serious when it needs to be; some of the big twists were huge gut-punchers. I’d definitely say the story was maybe the best part for me, and it’ll stick with me and inspire me for other personal projects for quite a while.

Winged Sakura: Mindy’s Arc

Winged Sakura: Mindy’s Arc

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Looks like some dumb anime game, right? I can’t actually be recommending it. Well, I totally is, and I am.

First of all, if you don’t have a tolerance for this kind of thing, I’d check out right now, because Winged Sakura is pretty much exactly the kind of game you’d expect from that title. It’s pretty much unironic about that, which had a certain silly charm to me, but obviously not for everyone. You play as Mindy, a young mage, and her Sakura Minzy - basically a spirit partner. They find themselves stuck in a building, and have no memory of how or why they’re here. To find out, you’ll need to head through four areas of twelve stages each, defending the place from attacks. Objectively the story is kinda bad; it often brings up new plot elements out of nowhere, all the characters are pretty one-note, and there’s a lot of it.

Real player with 78.9 hrs in game

Winged Sakura: Mindy’s Arc is probably not the best tower defense ever made, but it’s different enough from the standard td to be worth checking out, and it’s pretty fun too.

The key element of this game is that the spirits you summon to fight only last a few seconds, so you can never reach a state where you have all your defences ready and you simply need to watch as the level ends, instead you’re in constant need to keep summoning your spirits in order to survive, making it more fast paced.

Your spirits can level up and equip a weapon and an accessory, while the levelling up is quite basic and the best way to do it is simply progressing through the story, for the equipment you have to manage your resources and craft or buy items to level said equipment up and you have quite a good selection of accessories you can equip.
