Akane the Kunoichi

Akane the Kunoichi

This game. OH BOY, this game. I’ve finished it. Darn, I even got all the kimonos! (bonus items)

I’ve made it a point to at least TRY finishing it before writing a negative review, so I know what else is wrong with it. Well, ended up finishing it all.

Still won’t recommend this game to anyone. Ever. Unless I really want to see them raging.

To start this off, I’ll say this doesn’t SEEM like a bad game. It doesn’t even look so bad either. It only occurrs to you how bad it is when you start playing it. And this pisses me off the most. It could’ve been a good game, all it needs are some minor fixes…

So, the revealing portrait of the protagonist you see in the store page only appears on the title screen and when you use your ninja magic. I think it’s cute. I don’t really care what other people think of it. Now, let’s talk about the game.

Our heroine is a plucky ninja with a secret crush on a samurai, who gets kidnapped Double Dragon style in the opening cutscene by a rival ninja. She sets out to rescue him, and to kick any butts standing between her and her true love.

This is a pretty simple platformer, which seems to be aiming for the style of the old school platformers like Shinobi, or maybe the original Ninja Gaiden. The art is chibi style, the sound is basic but functional, and there’s gamepad support.

Eryi’s Action

Eryi’s Action

Eryi’s Action: you die, you drink. Best. Drinking. Game. Ever.

Some fairy called Farta steals the Melon of Eryi and so this epic saga begins. You have all the traditional platformer elements: jump, grab items, throw items. Some stages involve swimming or flying and the last stage consists of a “Bullet Hell” kind of fight. The art is consistently “cute” but the scenery and backgrounds are overly simple - kind of a turn down.

Anyway, don’t let the looks deceive you, this game is not for children. This is one of those troll games where traps pop out of nowhere; you have to memorize their positions and patterns. You start with 30 lives but they are actually infinite: the counter turns negative once they run out, just to remember you that you suck. Once you beat the game in standard mode, you can push your luck with the EX Mode: just 30 lives (for real) some minor modifications in the traps, a final boss on steroids and an EXTRA boss after the final boss.

Why do I recommend it?

  • It’s adorable

  • the main character is a troll (literally)

  • There are a lot of traps you have to remember, but also enough traps that are very difficult.

  • the save points/hard as hell traps ratio is exactly right.

  • The counter-intuitive becomes the intuitive, but the game remains as difficult.

  • It’s not the type of frustrating that you ragequit and never look at the game again.

  • this game is the digital incarnation of april 1st so a perfect gift today

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX

Alright, so of course I’m going to be biased with this review, because I am a GIGANTIC fan of the Gunvolt franchise. I own the Japan-exclusive Drama CDs, artbook, and I’ve read all of the Dengeki Nintendo Profiles. I’ve S+‘ed both Gunvolt games to completion on my 3DS and Switch, and I’ve accumulated 200+ hours into Gunvolt 2 ALONE.

Copen and Lola are some of my favourite characters in all of video games, or in fiction really, and I can never get enough of them.

It won’t be any surprise that Luminous Avenger iX was my most anticipated game of the year, and it’ll be less of a shock that I absolutely adored it.

Real player with 81.9 hrs in game

Now, as a fan of the Gunvolt series, I have high expectations for this game. From what it seems, it’s a spin-off of the Gunvolt series and it delivers a massive pack of actions as well as engaging storyline and gameplay. Although it’s more or less similar to the Mega Man X series, yet it has its own distinguishable captivating appeal and that what makes it interesting. So, let’s check it out in details!

The Gameplay

For those of you that have played Gunvolt before, I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with the game controls mechanic and how the gameplay works. But, if you’re new to this, fret not. As most 2D side-scrolling platformer action games, the protagonist require to jump, run and for this one, need to dash too, both on air and ground. Aside that, you need to shoot down the enemies, using normal shooting from far away, or perhaps the stylish lockdown targets, in which is very effective, if you ask me. And so, there you have it, the basics of movements and how to destroy enemies. Oh, what if when it comes to sub bosses and bosses fight? Right, using the control mechanism, you evade and dodge by running and dashing while shooting when have the chance. It’s that simple. But if you’re still struggling, worry not as the first level is more like a tutorial, so everything is peachy and you can take your time to get familiar with the controls and everything. Once you become the master of it, just replay for the highest rank.

HopBound

HopBound

This game is fabulous. It’s visually intriguing and difficult but doable. A solid platformer only enhanced by an engaging story of remorse and depression. I felt that everything from play-style to writing made this game a beautiful story that you got to experience with the characters. I really recommend this one and I’m totally going to check out games from this dev from now on. Make sure to check this one out!

I received this game for free, but my views are my own. There are both things I like and don’t like about this game and they are expressed in this short review.

Hopbound is a continuing narrative in the AppSirGames-verse (creators of Dere Evil.exe) that puts you in the shoes of Mayumi. A woman looking for her supposedly deceased boyfriend. Is he really dead? Does AppSirGames know more than they are letting on? Only one way to find out.

Hard platforming, a scary atmosphere, and a meta-story that will leave you wanting more. Hopbound has something for just about any platforming/horror fan out there. I personally can’t wait for their next title.

Killjoy Hunter Yuuko

Killjoy Hunter Yuuko

I’ll be short. This was the cutest one-and-a-half-hour psychic attack on my sanity in my life. Period. ^_^

Of course, you need to read the original ef novels or at least see the anime to understand what is happening here, or this won’t have ANY sense for you.

Mechanic-wise, it’s an extremely simple old-style platformer with four relatively short four-level stages and a

! double boss level. Yet it could be pretty difficult, if you activate Hard mode and aim for finding everything in one go. Nonetheless, it’s fun) Note that there are one or two small glitches which could be used at your convenience (for example, jumping along with the upward block by striking it repeatedly).

Mighty No. 9

Mighty No. 9

Okay so, at the time of writing this I have 3 bosses down.

Yes, I did back this game. Yes I did play the beta.

I won’t deny this game has a lot of controversy around it. But I’m gonna try to stick to the game itself.

Is it bad? No. Could it be better? yeah, but it’s still satisfying.

Is it worth the hate it gets? No, I would say not.

Most importantly, is the game fun? Yes.

I strongly recommend people play, and I mean actually play, not just the 0.2 hour times we’re seeing in the reviews, and form your own opinion.

Real player with 17.1 hrs in game

Mighty No.9 should be a textbook case of how to not destroy the expectations of everyone who was craving this game. There hasn’t been a Megaman or Megaman X game in years, this should have been a cakewalk for this team to do and other studios have shown they can get very close to getting that Megaman feel. I’ll get this out of the way first- I’m not going to go into the gripes about the Kickstarter campaign, or the long wait, or all the other campaigns that were started before this way finished- they have been discussed to death already and you can check from other sources if you still wish to support the game by buying it.

Blade Kitten

Blade Kitten

I think girls dressed up as cats are hot… There. I said it.

(Bonus points for the additional gothic dress for our cat girl heroine. Me-ow!)

Blade Kitten is a 2.5D, action-platforming game starring Kit Ballard, a cat girl (in an optional gothic dress) who controls a levitating AI sword and is followed around by some weird flying pet… thing, as she does battle against various factions out to get her while she tries to reclaim a data stick stolen from her and get payback for her destroyed ship. Or something. The whole story is a bit of a mess. There’s very little real explanation for who anyone is or how they’re all connected or ultimately what’s going on. The story and apparent goal seems to shift dramatically from one level to the next with little real sense of focus for anything, just a vague over-arcing narrative that’s sporadically dropped then brought up again at whim.

Real player with 28.6 hrs in game

Don’t even bother, this game could have been an average at best action-platformer, but it is so plagued with nuisances and an overall lack of polish to the point i don’t consider it worth buying even on sale, where should i begin?

Story and presentation are all over the place, plain and simple, apparently this game is based on a webcomic and i wish i knew that before buying this game, because the game never tells you anything, i mean, many people complain about games having long cinematics full of infodumps, well this game does the polar opposite, there is a lot of cutscenes, but they never tell you about the characters or the setting, you never know who these characters are, what’s the relationship between each other, nothing, i mean, i’m not asking for 30 minute long cutscenes like it’s a Metal Gear game, but a little bit of context about who the main character and her rival are would be nice, and the overall story? doesn’t seem to follow any kind of structure, it seems to be mostly a bunch of completely random events from beginning to end, so what you get in Blade Kitten is a bunch of unrelated events, with no context at all, trying to be like a cartoon or an anime, with an average at best voice acting and lots of cringy dialog
