Unhack

Unhack

Intro: When I joined Steam in 2012, my first attempt at VNs (visual novels) and A.I. storylines was Analogue- A Hate Story and Hate Plus. I discovered Unhack shortly thereafter and I can say with certainty that InvertMouse’s series is the more accessible of the two. Both make my recommendation list for VNs that I would recommend to newcomers, but if they approach this after being introduced to anime or manga, Unhack is better.

Pros:

  • The narrative (while simple) is the foundation for the sequel which genuinely surprised me in the direction it went. Despite that it still respects the story of this original and provides time to feel closure and emotional punch to the story from the first. (And on a narrative note, there is prequel DLC which has a separate review from me. Highly recommended and referenced

! as a location and art gallery in the sequel. It also makes one particular moment that much sadder and emotional when compared to another reunion in Unhack 2.

Remember there is a free demo that covers 40% of the game. If you are interested, just play that first.

In any event, this game just… underwhelms. It’s basically a visual novel with some basic gameplay thrown in to appease those people who claim that simply reading text “isn’t a game”, but the problem is that all it does is create a minor obstacle course to slow the player down in between text segments. Since all you do is use the arrow keys, it basically amounts to being told to push the same couple buttons with some general sense of timing to avoid the bad things, but since you’re more focused on the WAITING than the timing, it lacks all the appeal of a rythym game. It’s more like those stealth games where all you do is wait for an immobile guard to just turn a different direction, and where you have no tools at all.

I consulted with Valve.

But what they downloaded this time seems to be a formal right with a commercial license.

It is my mistake.(´・ω・') I consulted strongly but it was impossible. I’m sorry.

Glare1More is similar to text-only adventures. The story can only be progressed by finding the right buzzwords in your conversations with Glare and by typing them into a text field.

The static backgrounds are a little bit lacking by modern standards but look alright for the theme the game is going for.

Glare’s looping animations are very well done and a joy to be looked at. Especially her facial expressions can change depending on the mood of the topic entered via the buzzwords.

Content

The game comes with two stories. The main story that is about finding out why Glare was send to you, whereas the the second story (which is my personal favorite) sends you both to a derelict spaceship where you have to solve the mystery of the disappeared crew.

Oblivious Garden ~Carmina Burana

Oblivious Garden ~Carmina Burana

Hello Everyone,

A garden of oblivious pleasure is what comes to mind when I think of my experience with this game. The Story of the Oblivious Garden was an absolute delightful tale to complete. Oblivious Garden ~Carmina Burana is a romance themed visual novel game that was published by DigitalEZ. The story is about a general who was once praised by the people of his country but due to the loss of a major battle in the region of Latoy; the once praised general was stripped of his rank as General/his station as Baron and was exiled from the kingdom of Celantu. Three years later his Uncle the Emperor of Celantu invites him back to the kingdom in order to take charge in the kingdoms upcoming Miracle play that occurs in the kingdom’s coveted Oblivious Garden. The garden is occupied by 7 princesses that this disgraced general has to instruct in the art of fencing, so the princesses can perform in the Miracle play in an attempt to appease the country’s gods. This is where the story truly begins for the player.

I love VNs (Visual Novels). This one in particular is pretty awesome. Without spoiling to much of the VN, the artwork and background music is fabulous. The story for the most part is pretty good and each Princess is unique to their own peers, especially with their history/background story. There are 7 Princesses and 2 Maids that stand out. Only 3 Princesses and 1 Maid are options for an ending, maybe more in the future updates? (The staff has stated that it is not 100% done and Finn’s chapter will not be a free DLC in future dates, as it stated “Price glitch indeed, we’ll fix it asap”)

Truth: Disorder

Truth: Disorder

The whole purpose of this game is to send an hour of your life down in the dumps. You won’t become smarter or more knowledgeabe neither will you enjoy playing it, you’ll just get one hour(+/-) older. You could as well spend ths hour being a vegetable.

Do not let the pretty face on the cover lure you in and think twice if you really have nothing better to do.

Real player with 5.2 hrs in game

Truth: Disorder is a short (~30 min) visual novel with just one choice at the end of the game.

Backgrounds, sprites are fine, nothing exciting for me personally but pretty enough. I disliked music completely, had to set it as quiet as possible. But maybe it’s just me, I rarely like soundtrack in games.

And I guess that’s all what I can say about it in a more or less positive way. Now let me explain why I don’t recommend it.

I’ve never seen text in such condition O_O It looks like the devs/translator/proofreader(?) had some serious problem with space on their keyboard. Practically each sentence has either typed together words or an extra space where it shouldn’t be. It looks weird and soon becomes very annoying. I seriously can’t understand such devil-may-care attitude. I’ve seen games with much worse mistakes and too many typos. But here, is it really so difficult to fix it?! Though of course space problem is not the only issue with the language, just the most eye-catching.

ココロクローバー パート1/Kokoro Clover Part1

I do really like it. I am a beginner in Japanese. I do wish that the words were separated. This would help me know when words start and end. I can read hiragana but I dont know what they mean in English. So having words separated and having Particles in a different color would help too. But I dont know if this game is for people that know Japanese already. Anyway cute game. I will keep playing it and trying to translate it.

These are the words I tried to translate myself. haha Its from the story.

First, know that this game is only the 1st chapter. In a sense, a Demo/tutorial.

Now, the short version:

A pixel art platformer made in the vibe of a true Sunday Morning Anime. It is what it says on the tin. For casual players, those who have never played a platformer, and those afflicted by bad case of nostalgia. The game is fun, not hard, colourful, with good music, and simple gameplay. Being the Demo/Tutorial, promotion piece it is, it has some simple, but bearable flaws. However, they do not hinder the experience. Ideal as a ‘palate cleanser’ after more hardcore games like Ori, Hollow Knight, or the Gunvolt series. Main drawback for many would be that it is entirely in Japanese, with only English subtitles on the cutscenes. Still worth playing.

If you don’t buy this game, you are personally insulting me.

Serious review:

I’ve been playing this game on both PC and Ps3 since 2011. Game is amazing. Fast, Frantic, Hectic. I describe it to friends as a “High-Movement, Versus Shoot ‘Em Up”. and it’s pretty accurate. You control a character and fire weapons and laser swords and giant fists at your opponent to reduce their hp to zero at an alarming rate. The game is simple on the surface and allows very deep and quick-reaction strategy. When you become more skilled you both see and feel its rewards.

Carrying some of the principles and mechanics of the game Suguri (i.e dashing priniciples and heat gauge), Acceleration of Suguri X-Edition HD takes into to a world of arcade fighting style where you can not only just play your favorite silver head female Suguri but you can now play an extra cast of eleven more characters each with their own attacks, method of attacks, hypers, and devastating combos. Not only are you are presented with new characters, you are presented with now reworked background stages, outstanding bgm, and vigorous fighting styles which now you can take to friends since you can versus each other online.
