Wings Of Bluestar

Wings Of Bluestar

I have been following this game since it’s inception. What really stuck out was the graphics. It’s all hand painted with allot of detail in the environment. The game is a combination of Pulstar and Blazing star with a touch of R-type. it works really well. i found myself addicted to play the game again when i died. oh yes you will die, but you will make it a bit further each time you try again. That is what a shmup is all about. It also helps that the sound effect are really crunchy with great visual effects.

Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory

Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory

Without a doubt this game was a pleasant and enjoyable surprise! While it was obviously apparent that the title had similar styling and game-play flow to something like “Valkyrie Profile”, the challenge and combat balance proved to be of sufficiently stiff level. Make no mistake, even on the default difficulty setting before any NewGame+, this game can be HARD. After having completed both story paths it’s become apparent that besides the aforementioned NewGame+, there’s a One Life Mode available with options to upgrade your party members to their highest potential. The narrative is pretty deep for a game of this 2D style. The devs even include a nice card based bonus system that adds some flavor to the story that has you making decisions that shapes the unfolding tale. Sadly, these decisions don’t lead to vastly different endings for both characters. As for the audio, the soundtrack is sparse in terms of the number of distinct tracks, but absolutely brilliant. There are certainly some adrenaline pumping tracks on here when fights get dicey. The game also has some voice acting that is generally well done and in keeping with the fantasy story on show. To elaborate, the game’s lore has many words some which seem Celtic in tone and spelling which, when pronounced, coincide with the real world Welsh (the male Laendur’s voice actor brings this out well I think) and Irish (probably what the accent the female voice actor playing Cecille was going for). A very fitting and appreciated bit of effort in my opinion.

Definitely recommended! Lots of frantic action, split-second guards, diverse enemies, skills, combos, boosts, cancellations, one-shots, mass wipes, restarts, read again, ‘lots of action’.

No direct control over character movement, but full control over attacks and positioning. Little custimization in shape of gems (three at most), and a way to influence heroes' growth. Very indirect and totally obscure but nevertheless quite pleasant.

Hidden skills, New Game+ with Even More Punishment™, S-ranks to obtain, etc, etc.

Two Strikes

Two Strikes

You feel the adrenaline pump though you as you inch closer to your opponent. Testing his defence you make a small swing with your blade and the ring of steel hitting steel fills the air. You leap back but, he presses the attack! A lighting flash from above as the hiss of metal once again masks the sound of footsteps. You realize the next move is a faint a second late as red hot pain fills your entire being. After another leap back you take in your situation. You’re hurt but alive. He smiles at you, takes a step closer and winds up for a powerful swing. you feel a wash of air rush past your neck and head as you lean back and follow through with a powerful swing of your own. suddenly everything is quiet. you take a deep breath as your opponent falls to the ground.

TWOOO STRIKES?!

But the saying goes “Fool me once, strike one, fool me twice, strike three.”

WHERE’S STRIKE TWO? THERE’S NO TWOOOO STRIKES! THIS IS MADNESS! AHAHAHAHAHA

Fast-paced gameplay with spectacular visuals and a breathtaking soundtrack.

It’s very unique as a fighting game too. The meta is derived entirely of psych-outs, counters, and whiff punishes. There’s no okizeme, no combos, no blockstrings, not even crossups. it’s pure grounded neutral. It’s the epitome of simple, yet deep gameplay.

UNBEATABLE [white label]

UNBEATABLE [white label]

Initial impression after beating all the songs on Normal:

Game’s real stylish, but that can get in the way of playing it. Had several times I missed a beat either because there was so much going on screen I couldn’t even see it, or the camera was moving around so fast that the beat I needed to hit wasn’t shown until right before I had to hit it.

The blue enemies are obnoxious since you don’t know what the delay will be between the first and second hit until ~after~ the first hit, makin it kind of annoying to get right since some blue enemies need you to hit the second immediately after the first, while others have a noticeable delay between the two.

I really wish there was a “Keep an eye on it” option for reviews.

This game looks great, has an excellent soundtrack, and the gameplay is there. There’s very little in regards to an actual one player mode - you start the game, it dumps you into a tutorial, then a single song, then it just lets you select songs without showing a story progression. It might be because it’s still a work in progress, I don’t know.

Edit 6/26/21: Please disregard the previous review I had posted; After playing the game a bit longer, I figured out that the counter is for the percentage of perfect hits that you score, based upon the amount of notes that have been played so far. THAT is why the value goes down severely when you miss something very early, and why it feels like you’re not gaining that much of a percentage back as the song plays on. It’s a very backwards/opposite way for the game to keep score of that, and considering a lot of other UI design choices, it might be intentional. I haven’t figured out the formula, but it assigns a different value to Great and Poor hits.

This game is a really good addition to the JRPG genre. Combat doesn’t feel clunky and not overly complex. Graphics is certainly good, the cities, the characters and the effects used in battle. I just don’t like how other characters feet are drawn but that’s for a few characters. What really interest me is the job system. You can really customize them in many ways and so far none of the classes feels the same nor repetitive. Imagine your tank becoming a black mage and it freaking works well LOL.

I was hesitant about buying this game because of many reviews. The best advice i offer is that if you are a fan of JPRG, you must try it yourself. If YOU are in the same ship, please read all

Ok, thanks.

Overall is a tad of many classics, and maybe that´s the problem with many reviews: they automatically expect or compare this to all of them labelling it “not a classic”.

Gameplay wise It has the “charge” mechanic, all the spells and conditions, invocations and the swap character in the middle of the battle; in the many hours i have played haven’t gotten tired of, it reminds a little of Octopath. The only grip if you can say so is some spikes in difficulty, but amazingly you can customize the random encounters from a menu (if you don’t want random, if you want the enemies to respawn or not in a dungeon) you can always grind like in most rpg and rethink the strategy for that lost battle, dungeon or boss.
