DEAD OR SCHOOL

DEAD OR SCHOOL

”An excellent indie that bring both causally fun and challenging action”

Dead or School is side scrolling hack-n-slash game with RPG and looter shooter elements, developed by Studio Nanafushi of 3 people. It was 2016 kickstarter project that shifted and changed due to budget and manpower. I bought it day one as early access title in July 2018 and I’m happy to see a final release in April 2019.

The Story of Happiness in Darkness

Dead or School sets in post-apocalyptic future of Tokyo. The surface was infested by mutants, forced human to live desperately in underground shelters. You play as Hisako, a young girl who grew up in underground. She once notices an old uniform and heard the story about school as place of paradise from her grandmother. Hisako is overwhelmed by her strong will to seek the school and bring all people to happiness regardless of awaiting danger.

Dead or School is a hack and slash action indie game, featuring a girl in a school uniform with big dreams in a mutant infected dystopian Tokyo. As Hisako, you must dodge, cut, smash, shoot, and blast your way through hordes of enemies that stand between her and her simple, yet ambitious dreams of going to a school on the surface!

In this game, the player must complete simple plot advancing tasks whilst exploring the world in search for refugees, treasure and loot. You will not get lost whilst exploring, since the mini map tells you exactly where you need to go, but of course this doesn’t mean that the journey won’t be perilous. On your way to your destination, you will encounter platforming sections, puzzles and hordes of enemies— some which are rather simple, and others are straight up infuriating(yet possible). It doesn’t seem like much, but despite how simple the exploration was, it still managed to be pretty fun overall.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls

I have a lot of mixed feelings about Ultra Despair Girls, so I will put the TL;DR of my thoughts first and write an extended review below it.

TL;DR

Pros:

-AMAZING anime cutscenes

-Intriguing/cute way of implementing Danganronpa elements into a shooter with the wide variety of truth bullets

-Story is interesting and it keeps you wanting to know more throughout the game

-Finding books/notes/Hit Lists lying around was fun to read/find

-Most of the villains had some sort of likable aspects about them, and it was hard to completely hate them. They all also had solid motives (unlike a certain someone we know)

So, while I do recommend this game, I am doing so with some caveats.

If you are a danganronpa fan, play this for the story more than anything. It is an amazing story set briefly after the first game that adds a lot of backstory to the characters. It introduces you to all of the families(through cards about them mostly) and does so in ways that both make you chuckle and that break your heart. While it does feature one of the most insufferable characters from the first game constantly, Toko actually has some good development in this which surprised me an awful lot. It takes a while, but watching her open up more throughout the game made dealing with her at the beginning worth it.

Nurse Love Addiction

Nurse Love Addiction

I’ll start with the big con:

Translation standard is not up to par. Compared with Mangagamer’s Yurirei (Kindred Spirits) and SonoHana (A Kiss for the Petals), it’s not even close. In almost every scene this game has voice clips spilling over into multiple text boxes, general spelling and grammar errors (fixed now in a language patch), awkward phrases everywhere (the worst of both the literal and liberal translation worlds). The bonus seiyuu messages are not subbed. The medical glossary was completely cut from the English and Chinese versions. The OP and ED are not subbed. While Yurirei did not have anything like the medical glossary, it had a subbed OP and ED, as well as full translated lyrics for the insert song “A. A. Ai”. Subjectively, I preferred Mangagamer’s much more weeb translation style of Yurirei and SonoHana anyway. If this game was originally slated to release a month ago, Nao calling her Onee-chan “Asky” must be only the beginning of the abomination that was the script they had at the original release date.

First, I’ll give a note on the price. Yes, it’s more expensive than your average visual novel but it’s also significantly longer than your average visual novel. Also, every line by a character is voiced, even minor characters. You’re paying for something with significantly more effort and resources poured into it than your average $10 visual novel that takes a few hours to beat.

Another Note for potential buyers: Even vague hints about the story can blunt the surprise this game provides. So if you like being surprised, stop reading any reviews right now. Buy it right now or wishlist it for later but don’t read any reviews until you’re done the game.

b…

you are wrong to assume this is just a ‘good game’

the purity and essence of this is far superior than anything i have ever experienced in my entire life.

b can leave you completely clueless of the world, for one my entire family and wife have left me, but to that I say,

b.

you may find yourself jobless, without a home, but that corner internet cafe is capable of fulfilling your every single need. What need is that you may ask? Well, its

b.

your parents get concerned, they may not understand that your overall health isn’t of importance anymore, they won’t realise what this marvel of technology is to you and those who play it, so you simply have to ignore them, and find your way back to

This experience was life-changing.

From the homefield where the game starts, the home of b. The fields green of hope for something to be out there, perhaps in this universe, you could meet another of your kind, maybe this, will fill the emptiness inside. You start by searching around the tall grass and flowers, no trace of life. You then make your way to the tall tree, you look around, still no luck… Perhaps, you could go elsewhere, somewhere beyond… You start to race for space, in your run, you encounter the JPEG moon, the most amazing thing about this grass field. Beyond that, you start to see space, maybe, just maybe someone is waiting for you in space… Perhaps on these meteors heading your way… No, still no luck… Maybe somewhere BEYOND, you start to race even farther, to something more… immense… something hotter… THE SUN… On your journey, you encounter spinning galaxies, luminous objects. Your mind starts to go wild, and you hear music, intense music. You know what you want and you are fixated on it, the farther you go, the more intense the music gets. After such a long time, you see it! The moon AND the sun! You go wild, you go full speed towards it, but little do you know, it’s much father away than you thought. The anxiety is killing you. “Will I find who I am looking for or not? Will I ever be capable of going back? When will I reach it? Oh God, should I go back?” All these questions and more, but you keep your head straight. You know what you want and you won’t let anything let you down! Half way there, you realize it. The music in your head, it gives you motivation, you listen on to the music again, it’s louder than ever, and better than ever! You take your courage and go even faster than before, you go so fast, you don’t even know if you’re moving or not anymore. Then you reach it, the moon. It’s so calm and cool here, the best destination for a b. Looking up at space, you see the sun, smiling upon you. Maybe, just maybe, that emptiness inside was just because you didn’t feel at home anymore, this is your new home, and you feel fantastic.

Eventide Night

Eventide Night

Pretty solid Bullet Hell with fun and challenging levels. I re-binded the keys to C for attack, X for attack (there are two keys for the same attack, for some reason), and Z for the special move or ‘circuit’, as it’s called in-game.

I spotted some bugs here and there ー sometimes the game would freeze up and would only unfreeze once I paused and unpaused the game. Something else similar happened after I lost all my lives and selected “Restart Level” ー the screen would sometimes turn black and would only go back to normal once I paused and unpaused the game. It wasn’t a massive hindrance, but I thought it should be pointed out.

A beautiful game with a really nice soundtrack. I really like the theme and air of the story too. Default keybinds are a bit odd, using J for fire and K for bombs and WASD/arrows for movement. Can’t seem to find any English language option for the story, not sure if I’m blind or if it’s just actually Chinese-only. But considering the low price, I’d say it’s still worth it for the gameplay and music even if you can’t read the story.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1

Overall

An absolutely brilliant game. I bought this on Steam release because it looked entertaining for the ~£12 it was on sale for at the time of pre-purchase, and have not regretted a single moment of it.

Is it the best game ever made? Nah, not at all. We all know that is Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and it always will be.

But is it a fun, enjoyable game? Definitely, easily one of the most fun games I’ve seen released on PC in a while.

It is a game made for people who have enjoyed games for some time (a wide array of games, really), and also those who enjoy Japanese culture, like anime and manga, and pokes alot of fun at both.

Re;Birth1 is a very bittersweet game to me. On one hand - this was my gateway introduction to the entire Neptunia franchise. On the other hand - the way Compile Heart/Idea Factory have been treating this title as of the last few years is nothing short of baffling and downright confusing.

Before I get into the nitty-gritty, let me get some things out of the way first. Re;Birth1 is a remake of the 2010 Hyperdimension Neptunia for the PS3, built from the ground-up with a story rewrite using Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory’s engine and gameplay. Re;Birth1 was then later remastered in mid 2018 for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 under the title of “Re;Birth1 Plus” and that version has never been released outside of Japan and outside of the PS4 & Vita. However - features from it have been back-ported to Re;Birth1 and added as paid DLC. Honestly, gating off content that should’ve been free updates behind paid DLC is just a really scummy move. But had that been the end - I’d chalk this up to just a mention and a warning. Except…during the 10th anniversary livestream - Compile Heart had teased a big new project for the Neptunia series, and the following month - it was revealed to be a remake of…Re;Birth1 Plus for the PS5. There is currently a remake of a remaster of a remake in development at Compile Heart. It’s called Go! 5 Jigen Game Neptune reVerse. reVerse for short.

Graphics

(This part is the same in Rebirth1-3)

As in all Neptunia games we have gorgeous art in visual novel segments by Tsunako. In gameplay segments: adequate quality for characters and attack animations. Nothing too fancy but good enough. Sadly ps2 or even ps one quality for dungeons. Massive reuse of assets.

8/10 for visual novel segment.

5/10 for the rest.

Sound

While this game shares the solid soundtrack of other Rebirth games, the fact is that in this case it’s somewhat underwhelming.

New enemy characters (Warechu, Underling) are given their own theme which is great, it feels like the track definitely fits them but that’s exactly the problem. Since you will have to fight those characters routinely then this will be the track about which you will think when remembering this game. It fits them, but it utterly lacks any energy or drama. It is pretty sad that the only time you will hear the great “Dancing girl” will be during a fight with a generic monster…

Before i start this review i want to say that I am a fan of the hyperdimension games, they are my main reason for enjoin rpg games with their wild stories, great music, and solid gameplay. Now with that out of the way let me review this game. I will do it in a pro / con style and finish with my conclusion.

Pro:

It is more neptune. The game takes everything from the first game and uses it here. Same combat style, music style, everything is pretty much the same but now we have the ability to have 4 party members in combat at the same time. This is not ground breaking in any fashion but nice to see that.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3 V Generation

TL;DR : Play Re;Birth2 before playing this. It’s a good game with some mechanic changes which may take time getting used to

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3 V Generation is the third installment of the Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth franchise. The game takes place after the events of [i[Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth: Sisters Generation[/i] so it is adviced to finish playing that game before proceeding to this one.

Majority of the story takes place in the alternate dimension. In here, our lovable main character, Neptune, Meets the narcoleptic Plutia, CPU of the atlernate Planeptune. In this alternate dimension, there also resides alternate versions of the other Nation’s CPUs: Noire, Blanc and Vert, with little to no difference to their original counterparts.

_Another nep adventure is over and another review is coming up. This one will be more like changes between previous games and this one.

  • Stella’s Dungeon

Now this system became more related with game and most of the time items you need or plans or anything you can get only from there. Not like in the re;birth 2.

  • Interface

Menu has changed (like someones cares about it ..). Now because of 2 different dimensions we have 2 different maps. First one is our good-old hyperdimension simliar to re;birth 2 map, but this dimension is not here as main one becuase we can do stuff here only at start or end. Because of this not a lot of dungeons appear here. Second one is more unique and new becuase they did like you must to enter in country to get into its basilicom or dungeons, thats really cool and because of this there is lot of place for dungeons. There are also plans to change music in main menu and in fights i like those ^-^

This is my first review on the Neptunia series as the past games I felt were covered enough by the reviews, however this game I was just blown away with and I wanted to voice my input on it.

Story

The game continues from where Re;Birth 3 left off and is followed by 3 stories in one game, all 3 stories are within their own dimensions. Zero Dimension, Hyperdimension and Heart Dimension. Each story/dimension had it’s own feel which made it feel like 3 different games, however keeping true to the Neptunia series. Zero Dimension was in my opinion one of the better stories solely off of how it was told. It was a lot more serious, has a more darker story behind it and you actually worry about the survival of the characters during this story, that is how well it was written. Hyperdimension wasn’t as serious as Zero Dimension, Hyperdimension kept more of the aspect of keeping the randomness, the jokes, the 4th wall breaking that is a staple of the Neptunia series. Heart Dimension was a pretty good closer as well. The story felt mixed with Zero Dimension and Hyperdimension but there was a lot more twists in Heart Dimension. I always thought Re;Birth 2 had the more serious story but Megadimension took that over easily. I would go as far to say that this has so far been the best story out of the series and I truthfully enjoyed Re;Birth’s 3 story more than any of the previous games as I felt it covered a lot more, but once against Megadimension toppled that.
