Great puzzle game. English translation isn’t perfect, but it’s understandable. Love the unique puzzle combat.

Shenmue III

Shenmue III

Ah, Shenmue 3, how I have longed for the light of your presence to shine upon thee…

Heads up to those who peruse this review: I’m a HUGE shenmue fan. I backed this game on kickstarter and have played the game twice on Sony PlayStation 4.

Let’s forget all of the nonsense associated with Deep Silver and the Epic Game Store exclusivity. How is THE GAME?

A mixed bag.

Let’s start with the graphical presentation. Shenmue 1&2 were AAA games back in the day; the most expensive games every produced up until that time. Shenmue 3 is a AA game; as such you cannot go into this expecting the latest cutting edge graphics.

Before starting my review, I’d like to point out that we really need a mixed review option on Steam. I hope Gaben will hear our prayers one day. Anyway, as most of you know, Shenmue III is the highest funded Kickstarter game and it is definitely one of the longest awaited one. How long was it… 20 years? I’m not a loyal Shenmue fan, I didn’t wait 20 years for it, in fact, first time I’ve played Shenmue was a few months ago but I was aware of its significance and contributions to the video game culture of course. I also didn’t contributed anything to its Kickstarter campaign but putting myself in one of the loyal fans' place, I’d be extremely disappointed by this game. Especially after waiting nearly 20 years for it. Although I have no doubt that Yu Suzuki and YS Net did their best to bring a solid title to the fans, they’ve made a grave mistake by striking a deal with Deep Silver. 1 year Epic Store exclusivity was straight up disrespectful towards the people who contributed to Kickstarter campaign. Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes with Shenmue IV. Anyway, let’s take a look at the redeeming qualities first…

Tales of Symphonia

Tales of Symphonia

I’d first like to clarify that most of the negative reviews for this game were about glitches caused by it being shoddy port. These issues have been resolved.

This game is a real time rpg focused on gameplay with combos, special moves and team composition, and a story with heavy characterisation, strong motives, clear goals, twists and turns, hours of content, side quests and decent writing.

The gameplay is unique. The battles take place in 3d, but each character can only move in a 2d plane, with left and right going back and forward, and up and down jumping and crouching respectively. It seems like a system built of a limited controller however even modern controllers would struggle to undertake this in a better way. The only way to move in the 3rd dimension is to target a different enemy then move forward or back.

Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite JRPGs ever, but I decided not to review it until the various technical issues are fixed. Now that Bamco apparently got work done, I can actually recommend it.

The Technical

At first, I hesitated to buy because 1) my hardware is worse than even the minimum requirements and 2) many bad reviews about the port being a mess. In the end, I decided to buy it when it went on sale. The game wouldn’t even launch… until I discovered TSFix, an amazing community mod, which fixed that problem for me. It also enhances graphics a LOT, so I suggest checking it out. Don’t let the game’s sys-requirements scare you off; if even my underwhelming hardware can manage this game (at a steady 30 FPS with good graphics settings), maybe yours can too!

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Epic Battle Fantasy 4 (EBF4 for short) is the fourth installment of popular jRPG-esque series

that originated as web browser games. The series is basically a parody of famous Japanese RPG games (mostly Final Fantasy). If you want some more preview on the older games, I suggest you read my review on previous game, EBF3 (which is also on Steam), if you haven’t already.

But to keep things short, I’ll just give you a small preludium:

the series started as free browser games that were made for fun and played to kill some free time, and even EBF4 itself can be played via your browser, but there’s also an expanded, paid version (AKA the one I’m reviewing now), and it’s not exactly cheap, 11,99 USD. Some professional games cost as much, and thus, the game will be judged like one.

Well first let me tell you that I have followed the series on Kongregate while it had only released Epic Battle Fantasy 1 and to be honest the first and second game wasn’t that great but then the third instalment came to the series and it changed everything becouse it had absolutely everything an JRPG could offer for a flash game.

I played Epic Battle Fantasy 3 about 5 to 10 times and when beating the game it gets a bit repetative so I usually came back for it every other month or so. Even when I had played it 9 times it was still as fun as it was the first time I started the game. But years passed and one day in 2013 just before I was about to turn off my computer I just wanted to check my Kongregate and there it was, Epic Battle Fantasy 4.

3 Stars of Destiny

3 Stars of Destiny

If you like old school style pixel graphic types of RPGs… you’ll probably enjoy this game. It’s an okay game but to be honest it barely makes my recommended list. I do love a good RPG especially on that can tell a good story and give me a sense of exploration and adventure this one just falls short of that.

Graphic wise it’s okay. The graphics are just very typical for an RPG Maker game there’s not a lot of uniqueness to the sprites and the character portraits are only so so. They aren’t bad they just don’t really stand out. The music and sounds are pretty decent but some of it is too repetitive and I have to play without sound. It’s not that different than other similar RPGs in terms of graphics and sounds.

3 Stars of Destiny is, all in all, a good game.

The game serves as a prequel to Laxius Power (freeware RPG games) and Laxius Force (check aldorlea for more info). This may or may not make the experience better for you, although I played this game before any of the others, and I loved it, so it’s whatever.

The game is a pretty standard fantasy game. The story is okay, honestly even though I absolutely adore the game, the story isn’t insane. It wasn’t meant to be insane either. This game was meant to be about how the main characters meet up, and that’s what the game showed off and did well.

Epic Dumpster Bear: Dumpster Fire Redux

Epic Dumpster Bear: Dumpster Fire Redux

Don’t judge this game by its cobbled together graphical assets; they actually end up adding to the charm once you realize how good the game is! Epic Dumpster Bear is a very enjoyable platformer with a good deal of content. It’s got a lot of levels, 3 hidden collectible coins in each, some secret exits for optional harder levels, and speedrun challenge medals. It’s also pretty challenging in generally fair ways (harder than Mario, easier than Meat Boy), even for experienced platforming game players. Also the soundtrack is super good. $5 is a very fair price for the amount that you get with this game.

Epic Dumpster Bear: Dumpster Fire Redux is a funny and challenging platformer that is fun to play. You play as a bear whose natural habitat has been destroyed by “an evil corporation” and you are out for revenge. The simple story coupled with the actual gameplay really reminds me of the classic 8-16-bit games such as Mario and Sonic titles.

Genius! NAZI-GIRL GoePPels-Chan ep1

Amazing game, makes me laugh every time I open it up. There is one problem, and it is that the game is only like 20-40 minutes of gameplay, on all of the eps for all options. Still a good game though. I would expect it to be at least $2 each

A short but sweet visual novel. Has a surprising amount of historical accuracy for a moe-styled retelling of the Nazis' propaganda efforts. I’d recommend not posting anything about it on YouTube if you value your channel (I’ve learned this the hard way).

You can reach an ending in about an hour if you don’t rush it and listen to the dialog.

Translations are very well done and everything is perfectly understandable.

One playthrough has me wanting to buy the sequels, if you’re interested then pick it up!

Super Crystal Hunter

Super Crystal Hunter

Not a bad little puzzle/action game. I love the mini games, but wish there was a way to pick which you played as they are unlocked, instead of random each time.

Not sure if I am sold on the difficulty being longer levels with higher point threshold, but it’s an impressive feat nonetheless for an RPG Maker game to look like this AND have such variety.

The Good:

  • Short download time

The Bad:

  • Unskippable text / cutscenes

  • Horrible hitboxes, both for catching gems and in mini games

  • No explanation of gem values to let you score better

  • Some characters don’t have portraits when you interact with them. It just says “NPC” instead

Not worth it even on sale.

Interesting and original puzzle game, pretty difficult for me, but everybody who likes puzzles should try it.

Jade Cicada is a puzzle game with mirror-like movement of figures where you have to simultaneously get two figures to certain areas along the way bypassing tricky enemies and walls.

Gameplay

The game features 60 levels across 6 different locations with a variety of enemies, level design and bosses. The game requires you to control two characters simultaneously while attempting to reach objectives. The goal is to get both fish to be on the same square as each of the crickets on each level while navigating around enemies and obstacles. The mirror-like movement tests the player’s ability to plan ahead, strategize and utilize their problem-solving skills. The threats to both fish on each level poses a unique puzzle-solving experience and requires the player to navigate multiple puzzles at the same time, the failure of one side of the puzzle influencing the success of the other. The game’s unique style of puzzle design is interesting, challenging and fun.
