Civil War: 1863

Civil War: 1863

It’s a nice game especially for the price. Its a simple fun little game. There is some thinking and strategy involved. The AI has actually beaten me a couple times on normal difficutly which is extremely rare. It has worked great on my computer and was easy to learn. It is a good edition to a library because sometimes you only have an hour to relax and play. I have other games much more in depth. Often the wife will say go play one game and dinner will be done in an hour. Most of my games take two weeks to finish so at least with this one I can make it down to dinner. Plus there just arent many Civil War games out there. I really liked, mid 1990’s, Civil War I and II by Sierra and Sid Meiers Gettysburg it would be great if Steam could sell these so I could play them again.

In my opinion, this game and others by this developer - Hexwar Games - got a bad rap from many reviewers. First of all, comparing it to a real time strategy game is apples and oranges. Ultimate General may just be a great game, but rts isn’t for everyone, or doesn’t have to be every time you want to play a game. I like turn based hex games!

Other games of this style and genre may be more historically accurate and more complex, but again, it’s apples and oranges. This game is a little on the casual side, and it definitely isn’t a real battle simulator. But sometimes I just want to charge those cannons or outflank that line, without feeling like I need a Ph.D. in military history just to play a game. Every tree may not be in the right place, but that’s OK with me.

American Patriots: Boston Tea Party

American Patriots: Boston Tea Party

I started wargaming in the 80’s, when a flood of small, inexpensive games hit the market. Metagaming and SPI were among the first to offer a whole game for just three or four dollars. Pretty soon TSR was churning them out as well. This is very much that sort of game- hexboard, attack/defensive-move. Nothing revolutionary here (irony). But it is the sort of thing you’ll like if you like that sort of thing.

A note on the simple graphics- simple does not always mean bad. The bare-bones graphics add a lot of class and atmosphere to the game. The map is a hex grid laid over a vintage sepia map- very pretty.

Highly Recommend! For what this game is it is an absolute gem.

I bought this game and its Civil War themed sequel for only $1. I already love these games, and I haven’t even tried any of the multi player modes yet. This game’s not without a couple of forgivable flaws. If your mouse has a high DPI rate, you might want to use keyboard controls to navigate.

These games eliminate the biggest downside to table top war games. Most games take a long time to set up, and even longer to get past the “Opening Game” phase where you move toward engaging the enemy. For true fans of tactical board games this game would be a bargain even at a cost of several dollars. If the devs wanted to, they could easily add a few simple features like more maps that would make this game a great value even at a cost of $5 or more.

Civil War: Battle of Petersburg

Civil War: Battle of Petersburg

For the price, what’s the risk? BATTLE OF PETERSBERG will appeal to hisorical and strategy turn based gamers. Sure, there is room for improvement, especially with the hexagonal map, camera perspective and color scheme, which make it difficult to see terrain and to select units. And, I can’t speak to historical accuracy because I’m no expert. But you get an entire campaign providing several hours of gameplay through multiple battles. The gameplay is simple and no-frills that gives artillery a lot of power (they can move, condutct ranged attack, and destroy entire units, all in one turn). Your strategy will focus on using artillery to blast away entire sections of the enemy front line, followed up by infantry to clean up anything missed by the artillery, and cavalry to exploit the hole you’ve just punched. My recollection of the Petersburg campaign is that this is basically the strategy used. Recommended despite its problems.

In short - quick and easy to play, arcade game with strategic elements. Low price but also low content.

  • Quick and easy to play

The game is far from being complex. You need only 1-2 minutes in menu to adjust all the graphic settings and the same amount of time spent using tutorial is more than enough to start first scenario. Simple rules of combat, relatively small maps as well as not much of a variety of units make the play fast and easy to finish even during eating dinner.

  • Hot seat

It is always nice addition to the simple&short games. It could be strategic game but the truth is that you won’t make complicated plans and cunning strategies as this game lacks of any strategic depth. So there is no fear to play against each other using “hot seat” option as it suits such “strategic-arcade” game.

Civil War II

Civil War II

At first I was a bit overwhelmed, and felt like there was more micro-managing than I could handle.

  • I first played the game tutorials, but they covered mostly just the basics, but there was still so much I couldn’t understand.

  • The manual is comprehensive, but doesn’t deal with tactics, nor how or when to utilize the many nuances built into the game.

  • I searched YouTube and found several helpful postings, but most dealt with specific topics, and I still couldn’t grasp how to connect all the moving parts.

Civil War II has the makings of bing one of the best strategy game available – especially on the Civil War, definitely an underserved topic. It’s extremely complex, but that translates into a realistic feeling: war is complex.

Unfortunately, AGEOD has dropped the ball in 2 major areas:

First, the bugs. Almost all players have commented on them, so it’s the game, not individual computers. In a campaign, the game crashes about every 3rd turn. Fortunately, reloading the game with a previous save allows the war to go on. Except I reached March 1863 and encountered a hard crash that’s unrecoverable, recurs after reboots & reloads.

Main quests:

  • So far two of the paythroughs I have had have game breaking bugs for the main quests.

Police:

There is not enough interaction with the police, they are basically not even a problem. Give them more power, create tiers of police, where there are cops, investigators, feds, etc. Make it so that if you piss the police of by killing a lot of people you get a heat system.

Economy:

There is apparently a non ending need for alcohol, the game would be more interesting if your bar saw less profits and patronage because your neighboring faction has a better bar, higher quality booze, etc.

Seems like the game has that weird Paradox disease where the game is garbage day one but undergoes radical changes that make it into something really special. I bought it after the precinct update and I’m hooked. I like the combat and gang management elements as well as the almost seamless switching from tactical map to street view to turn based combat. There’s also room for strategy, you can cut off sections of someone’s territory to destroy their supply lines or trade poison disguised as high end alcohol to set some one up for the moment you take out their brewery in an ambush leaving them with nothing to sell and no one to sell it to. I think that it’d be a whole lot better with more room for customization but it’s a solid solid game.

City of Gangsters

An amazing game overall. I would like a few more features though, such as the ability to export goods to other cities, mansions that you can buy, maps based on Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, and the ability to buy off the mayor or even run for office.

Great management style game. Don’t expect a game with heavy fighting as this is not the focus of the game. It’s really how to max profit. Easy recommend for me.

Dawn of the Mexica

Dawn of the Mexica

A deeply tactical and challenging roguelike that leads you through the Aztec underworld to the realms of the gods.

  • Fascinating mythology and stone-age combat aesthetic

  • Multiple viable combat and survival strategies.

  • Highly lethal combat system that may be frustrating for the casual gamer. Most deaths past the very beginning will occur from incapacitating crits (and sometimes critical fumbles); successful strategies will revolve around mitigating risk and/or playing rocket tag with certain enemies so they can’t fight back. Unlike many other games, hit points or health is a very poor measure of character survivability - in comparison with defensive skills, armor, etc. Control of distance, visibility, light levels, and cover are very important. Personally, I like it; but not for everyone.

A very well-researched Mesoamerican roguelike that delves into a setting rarely explored in gaming mediums. The combat descriptions are quite nice, and there are a variety of different skills and classes to unlock. It’s quite enjoyable to try some utility skills to round out your character, things like swimming, liquid identification, and others can all be of service.

The main negative is that deaths can be nearly instantaneous. This makes for a game of planning, of thinking, “Hey, I’m a caster, maybe some perception will keep me from getting mauled around the next corner.” However, as the game is approachable for new runs, this isn’t much of an issue (though there are times when I’m wondering how to improve). It’s a whole lot better than TOME 4’s instadeaths 15+ hours into the campaign.

I’ve had this game for awhile so i guess this was a review long coming. what did i like? everything essentially. the time the game was sent in, the ships, the muskets. all down to the game’s controls. even watching the battle go on, if you have the time is like watching a movie. if there was anything i could say this game truly missed, it would be these few cons:

  • There’s no way to play with a friend in the campaign. as detailed as it was it missed this feature. maybe if

this ever gets a reboot it could include a campaign like shogun total war 2 has (you can play with a friend). And include a full on multiplayer campaign so players would fight for territory instead of just the AI

Basically, I’m addicted to this game. When I feel like some quick entertainment a little Road to Independence is in order. This is especially fun when you put it on the hardest setting and promptly cream the red coats at Bunker Hill. Watching them run away is completely gratifying.

Once in awhile it is enjoyable to sink a Spanish Galleon with an 18 gun sloop. It’s nice to have guns that shoot farther than the big boy’s guns. Layoff in the distance, knock out the masts with chain, and then have at the immobile hulk.
