Civil War: Battle of Petersburg

Civil War: Battle of Petersburg

For the price, what’s the risk? BATTLE OF PETERSBERG will appeal to hisorical and strategy turn based gamers. Sure, there is room for improvement, especially with the hexagonal map, camera perspective and color scheme, which make it difficult to see terrain and to select units. And, I can’t speak to historical accuracy because I’m no expert. But you get an entire campaign providing several hours of gameplay through multiple battles. The gameplay is simple and no-frills that gives artillery a lot of power (they can move, condutct ranged attack, and destroy entire units, all in one turn). Your strategy will focus on using artillery to blast away entire sections of the enemy front line, followed up by infantry to clean up anything missed by the artillery, and cavalry to exploit the hole you’ve just punched. My recollection of the Petersburg campaign is that this is basically the strategy used. Recommended despite its problems.

In short - quick and easy to play, arcade game with strategic elements. Low price but also low content.

  • Quick and easy to play

The game is far from being complex. You need only 1-2 minutes in menu to adjust all the graphic settings and the same amount of time spent using tutorial is more than enough to start first scenario. Simple rules of combat, relatively small maps as well as not much of a variety of units make the play fast and easy to finish even during eating dinner.

  • Hot seat

It is always nice addition to the simple&short games. It could be strategic game but the truth is that you won’t make complicated plans and cunning strategies as this game lacks of any strategic depth. So there is no fear to play against each other using “hot seat” option as it suits such “strategic-arcade” game.

while it is very rough it has obvious potential the idea of being a soldier in a civil war battle is a interesting and entertaining the game right now is functional but has some problems. Like getting stuck in the aiming pose when your trying to get to the shoulder arms position or how a side will randomly stop spawning soldiers. But if they keep working on it it would be a entertaining game to play.

Madden NFL 21

Madden NFL 21

If you’re looking for a realistic football simulating video game that gives you a half-way authentic NFL experience….keep looking. This year’s installment of the annual abortion that is Madden is BRIMMING with impactful bugs, scarily consistent crashes, and (assuming you’ve successfully navigated thru all of that) an entirely bland and unsatisfying simulation of the typical NFL game. Not only has this game been horribly adapted to PC, but it is entirely consistent with it’s long line of predecessors. The gameplay can only be described as “The Game of Football” according to what a native resident of Bangladesh heard of American Football was like from his Pen Pal in Saudi Arabia. Yes, you are technically running and passing the football against some character models that vaguely resemble (that’s an understatement…there’s really 0 resemblance among all of the players) NFL athletes, but the comparison to how a normal game of football plays out stops there abruptly. Without wildly changing the “Gameplay Sliders” (yes you can literally alter everything about the gameplay which to me is the Devs admitting “hey we really don’t know how impactful any aspect of this sport is so we’ll let you figure out that little detail) the game is wholly inauthentic. Adjusting the sliders makes the game a tad more realistic but overall this title is the epitome of why Madden is one of the shining examples of bare minimum effort put into a game for the sake of raking in annual sales. If you’re not one of the chumps like me who bought this game I implore you not to. The only way these games can become even halfway realistic is if EA takes a hit to their sales and recognizes that minimal investment will yield minimal return.

For years, football fans have yearned for a game with NFL licensing made by any company other than EA. The most cited competitor is generally 2K, who last made an NFL licensed game in 2004 - ESPN NFL 2K5 - one of the most well-received sports games of all time. ESPN NFL 2K5 was almost the nail in the coffin for Madden. The game received more critical acclaim than Madden 2005, while being priced $30 cheaper at a mere $20. I received the game as a Christmas gift that year, and played it for hundreds, if not thousands of hours. I can attest that its ambitions even 16 years ago were way beyond the scope of anything Madden has done since then. It is truly a tragedy for someone like me, who saw so much potential in football games back then, to see what football games have become today.

Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom

I wanted to at least complete the main story mode to give a proper review; I really had fun with this game, I’m super into the show and the books, but not exactly on the whole Action RPG formula (although this one reminded me a lot of Mercenary Kings, and that game rocks) so that says how well the characters can carry you along to keep you hooked xD

If you’re a fan of the show, you’re gonna love this game… Jack Sullivan as a protagonist can be annoying at times (and I like the guy LOL) so I don’t blame you if you find his narration obnoxious, that’s like… his thing, but then again it feels like something from season 1 of the show (considering the game was produced along it) and since then the characters had evolved a bit more ^^

The real Double Dragon 3, as far as I’m concerned. This game is a ton of fun and legendarily cheesy. For my ninja game fix, I personally prefer this over the Shinobi series.

Reminds me of the 90s big time. I remember seeing the Sega Genesis version and I wanted to try this game out since I heard the Arcade version is superior but I can tell you the hit boxes on the enemies are rough and it can be completed in 30 minutes. Its fun at first but the bosses hit boxes are terrible.

I started wargaming in the 80’s, when a flood of small, inexpensive games hit the market. Metagaming and SPI were among the first to offer a whole game for just three or four dollars. Pretty soon TSR was churning them out as well. This is very much that sort of game- hexboard, attack/defensive-move. Nothing revolutionary here (irony). But it is the sort of thing you’ll like if you like that sort of thing.

A note on the simple graphics- simple does not always mean bad. The bare-bones graphics add a lot of class and atmosphere to the game. The map is a hex grid laid over a vintage sepia map- very pretty.

Highly Recommend! For what this game is it is an absolute gem.

I bought this game and its Civil War themed sequel for only $1. I already love these games, and I haven’t even tried any of the multi player modes yet. This game’s not without a couple of forgivable flaws. If your mouse has a high DPI rate, you might want to use keyboard controls to navigate.

These games eliminate the biggest downside to table top war games. Most games take a long time to set up, and even longer to get past the “Opening Game” phase where you move toward engaging the enemy. For true fans of tactical board games this game would be a bargain even at a cost of several dollars. If the devs wanted to, they could easily add a few simple features like more maps that would make this game a great value even at a cost of $5 or more.

The Expendabros

The Expendabros

Expendabros

is a 2D action shooter, developed to promote the (at the time) upcoming movie, The Expendables 3. The overrall game is very short (approx. 1hr), but that is to be expected as it basically acts as a free demo to Broforce .

The plot is loosely based on that of the film, it revolves around your team of seven “Expendabros” who are trying hunt down the notorious arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks. Not that you exactly care about the plot, I mean you are only playing the game for destroying everything you see.

Ran through this 2x today on one of my kid’s Steam account. First with a 4-way and then a trio. Immensely fun, intense, short, and satisfying. Basically just a small taste (demo) of BroForce but worth replaying in single player or co-op for speed-run bragging rights. Moreover, it’s free. A big thank you to Free Lives and Devolver Digital.

EDIT: 2014-08-08. There have been both positive and negative reviews complaining about frame-rate issues, including one reviewer with an nVidia GTX 760. While I have a GTX 660, I have only played the game on a pair of other PCs, both of which have an AMD Radeon R7 260. Not once did I experience any frame-rate issues and these cards are inferior to the GTX 760. While I don’t doubt the reviewers problems perhaps the game is less optimized for nVidia cards. I’ll play on my PC over the weekend and comment here if I have any issues.
