So I am re-reviewing this after it has been updated. The game has immensely improved with the changes. I was actually able to complete the whole game. The clown improvement has actually made the first part a lot more scary since he can pretty much pop up anywhere. For the second part I would say the statue would be more threatening if she moved faster but she did jump scare me a few times when I would turn around not expect her to be that close to me. Also the highlighted items allowed me to find how to proceed past that section. The last section was creepy for the first few minutes but grew a bit old pretty quick. Overall I think the game was fun in this new state and worth a play through plus the developer was willing to listen to the feedback and improve the game which is a big plus. I still think $10 is a bit on the high end of a price for this though but if you want to spend that much or if it’s on sale then go for it. If you want to see my first play through before the update you can check out my video below.

Beyond The Thaw

Beyond The Thaw

You are Max Gilbert, a former military doctor. While taking a trip to your usual place of stay, which is a nice cabin near the lake, the next moment you find yourself alone in the middle of nowhere, fighting fierce cold and facing series of trials. What is it: reality or mind games, behind which lies your truly hidden deep secret?

Beyond The Thaw is storytelling and a slightly walking simulator with elements of stealth, horror, and adventure. We squeeze cinematography out of the Unreal Engine and work hard to create beautiful and cohesive gameplay scenes. Every detail should be meaningful, storytelling is more important than beautiful style.

As the player progresses, it is necessary to make quick decisions that require interaction with the game through the QTE (quick time event) — to run, hide from opponents (creatures and people), solve puzzles, plunging deeper into the game’s history, and conflict.

We have provided additional activities — fishing, chopping wood, riding a snowmobile, searching for herbs, so that you can just catch your breath and enjoy the process, but at the same time, each of these activities will work to reveal the plot.

You will meet both negative characters and positive ones. But at first glance, you never know who is in front of you. You always need to be on the lookout and face danger.

There will be a lot of collectibles in the game, it won’t be easy to find them, but once you find them, you can learn more about the game world.

Key features:

  • Frightening cold atmosphere

  • You are prey

  • Cinematic experience

  • Mystical story

  • Remember, in order to survive — you need to LISTEN

Zombies In The Dark

Zombies In The Dark

2.5/10

From time to time, I like to take a chance on a super-cheap indie title that I find on Steam. I generally like top-down shooters and spooky games, so Zombies in the Dark fit the bill. Although I saw a few negative reviews, these were from when the game was in early access. I had hoped that the most prominent issues were fixed by the time the 1.0 release rolled around.

Unfortunately, I was incorrect. There are a lot of issues here that make Zombies in the Dark unpleasant to play:

I bought this game when it was on sale, It was interesting to play and it does remind me of the old resident evil games with the fixed point of view. I know its in early access, I’m hoping for more to be added.

The controls are very sensitive and it makes it a little hard to play. Its best to use the keyboard and mouse instead of the controller. I got further with the PC controls than I did with the console controls.

I like the old style of the game, so I’m not complaining.

So first and foremost before I even say anything developer. You need to immediately remove all the recorded voicework in the game. American English speakers appreciate your effort, but the bottom line is the inexperience of the voice actors makes it impossible for you to portray the characters you’re trying to portray. Instead of doing it this way, I suggest you record the voicelines in your native language and then have English subtitles translated by a professional. The way the voicework is now is totally immersion breaking and hilarious, but that’s totally okay because it’s something that can be fixed.

A hellish mess which is as fun as buying a fake turd on ebay. Horrendous voice acting.

Millennium Atoll

Millennium Atoll

The idea is very nice and one can tell the effort it has been put on it, cool atmosphere.

But frankly, this game has no more than 40 minutes gameplay, it cannot be sold for the price it has. It is quite sad. It would be better to bundle it with other games. Or maybe I missed something?

American Patriots: The Swamp Fox

American Patriots: The Swamp Fox

This is just a plain neverending wave shooter. Simple as that. The game doesn’t claim to be anything else. A bit unpolished, but it seems to be a one man job. A bit heavy on the price since it is really basic, but I picked it up at a sales so I guess it was OK.

The big let down is how demanding this little game is. I had to play at 720p with lowest settings on everything. And I still had some performance issue when there were many enemies. Hopefully fixed in future updates.

“Third Update”

All control mapping is now working and is smooth and easy to use. Playing through for a second time was more enjoyable without fighting these.

I know mappings may seem like a “small thing to be updated” but the speed the devs have done it and their updates was what stopped me from refunding and got me to play through twice.

Keen for episode 2.

“Original Review”

This game does seem like it could be good, unfortunately running on a Vive it seems that the controls do no function and you’re unable to proceed past the initial starting point.

The Terrible Old Man

The Terrible Old Man

I never write bad reviews for games, because, if I don’t like one, I usually just put it aside and move along, but I cannot, for the life of me, understand how this game is so highly rated. Am I missing something??

The dialogue was bland and I noticed some very obvious mistakes, which just resonates on the fact that they didn’t put much effort into it.

The portraits were terrifying in an absolutely hilarious way, but it feels unintentional. It gave me serious Legend of Zelda: Wand of Gamelon vibes. The movement was awkward and sticky and there was no. goddamn. plot.

Real player with 0.9 hrs in game

This isn’t so much of a “reinterpretation” or “retelling” as it is a straight up clone of Lovecraft’s 1921 short story of the same name with a few unimportant details omitted. It says that it’s “based off” the 1921 story in its credits, but this game easily only uses 2% originality (if that) while the rest of the plot comes directly from Howard Phillips' own typewriter. I thought that this was going to more or less be a point-and-click adventure game with puzzles and various threads you can follow. However, there’s only one path to go down and only one ending that you can get. Sure, you can try all the bits of dialogue with each character (of which there are a few), but there’s only one selection per character that’s actually correct. You can easily find the correct answer by process of elimination. While you are supposed to go back and talk to people you’ve already annoyed or conversed with, this isn’t so much a “puzzle” as it’s something that players assume that they already need to do from the get-go (especially with point-and-click interactive fiction adventure games). Just so you know: I don’t care that this isn’t a puzzle game. What I care about is getting invested in a game whose plot from its original source material can’t just be looked up on Google in 10 seconds. If everything that’s going to happen can be revealed with a couple mouse clicks, I feel like something is definitely wrong with the game in question. I genuinely was looking for my expectations to be subverted, and they were not. Although I rather enjoyed the art design (the people’s faces were brilliantly scary and had a unique clay-like quality to them), it still wasn’t enough to keep me interested for longer than its expected 25 minute length. Maybe a longer game with more paths to go down could be worthwhile.

CARNAL

CARNAL

My opportunity to play CARNAL has come after hearing about it in the E1M1 Magazine blog. It sure does look and feel retro, but here are my ups and downs

Pros

-Neat and effective weaponry

-Diverse enemy lineup from your usual soldiers with weapons to T-Rexes with rocket launchers and self-operated lawn mowers, PLUS shopping carts with minds of their own

-Nice level visuals, giving the atmosphere of a pretty desolate environment overrun by the Sons of Anak clan

-Retro soundtrack, ranging from Quake levels of ambience to intensely amazing bangers

Real player with 28.3 hrs in game

I like this game’s graphical style and level design (at least it’s not another ‘abstract sci-fi levels’ style retro-FPS) and there are many enemy types, but the whole game desperatly needs some polish.

The protagonist’s ‘pain sound’ is atrocious and the controls are sometimes very bad, you have to press jump to go up on a staircase, etc.

The enemies are too small and too silent (and too dumb) and technically they aren’t hitscan, but almost.

I understand that the creator of this game wants a life system instead of saving, but the game is way too hard in this way.
