Auto Age: Standoff

Auto Age: Standoff

A ton more fun than I was expecting.

Full disclosure, I am an indie dev living near where Phantom Compass is located, so I knew about the game and was given a free copy. Very surprised at how fluid and smooth and most of all FUN the cars are to drive. I absolutely love the way the little cars handle. It has that perfect “arcady, videogamey” vibe, where teh cars aren’t striving to feel realistic, they are striving for teh best player experiance possible, which I personally think is teh best way to go about this type of locomotion based game. They really did a great job tweaking the cars, and probably my favrit part about teh game is drifting around and boosting into teh air, feels so slick.

This is not a combat-racing game. vehicular brawling, varied classes/styles and weaponry, arenas, aesthetic; this is a car combat game - Auto Age is this in essence, and it’s not too shabby.

In my opinion, the last proper car-combat game was Twisted Metal for the PS3 released back in 2012, and when there are far too few games released apart from the Twisted Metal franchise that fit the bill for being considered part of the car-combat (sub)genre, and to date, as an indie title, Auto Age: Standoff covers the bases to officially be a part of the lineup and not be cringeworthy in 2018.

Cartels

Cartels

Cartels takes place during the late 1980s drug war in Colombia. Fight for the Medellín Cartel as a Sicario, or enforce the law on the Coalition as either a Colombian Search Bloc or DEA operative. Take to the streets and jungles of Colombia and engage in intense realistic firefights.

Features:

  • Authentic gunplay: Engage in realistic firefights with weapons that must be carefully aimed, but are quicker to kill. There are no crosshairs or hitmarkers.

  • Character customization: Mix and match numerous clothing options to make your favorite outfits for either the Cartel or Coalition.

  • Cooperative & offline play: Play cooperative missions against AI enemies with your friends in Outbreak and Operations, or offline in any mode.

  • Weapon unlock & variant system: Unlock new weapons and variants by completing challenges as you play. Progression is not linear, so what you unlock next is up to you.

This is a neat game! The style of the ship and the ship manual are super flavorful and I had fun messing around with it. The one problem is that it’s a bit repetitive: most of the hazards you can see are handled in very similar ways and it feels like once you’ve played it for a few hours you could start to memorize most of the steps. Definitely once your Mission Control has gotten a feel for how to navigate the manual the missions become pretty easy.

That said, the aesthetic is great and if it interests you I definitely recommend it. Just know that you won’t be getting too much playtime out of it unless you regularly invite new players to be in charge of Mission Control. I’d love to see the game expanded in some way with either dual hazards or more variation in how you solve problems, but it’s a fun package as it is and I plan to keep showing it to friends.

As someone that has played a lot of Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, and ALSO someone that loves all the movies/series about various NASA space programs, this game seemed right up my alley.

So my friends and I got into character and decided that we didn’t need to preview the manual, we just jumped in. Then we died, and died, and died again. Since it’s the first day the game came out, we couldn’t even look to search engines for help guides. Eventually, though, we read the manual correctly and things improved. (And by ‘we’ I mean my friend did. I’m still very confused.) – Hint, page 57 is a good page.

Nuclear Dawn

Nuclear Dawn

There were very few games like “Nuclear Dawn” prior to its release; only the original “Natural Selection” and one (maybe two) other games fit in the same black sheep category of FPS/RTS. There was ample fun to be had in the game’s myriad roles: you could sit in your team’s bunker as the commander and spread buildings deliberately towards the enemy base in a game of chess, supplying and defending your pawns; you could play as the hulking siege, crushing the other team’s build-out; you could suit up as the the equivalent of the heavy in “Team Fortress 2” to lock down valuable resource points; you could slip through enemy lines as the stealth, literally turning invisible until you were ready to stab sieges, snipers, or even commanders in the back; you could play as a support, healing teammates, repairing the commander’s buildings, or wielding flamethrowers and gas grenades; or you could be an “assault” to hunt down spies with your thermal vision and protect all of the other classes around the map.

Nuclear Dawn is one of the best mash ups of FPS and RST currently available on Steam. It is my impression that the only contender in thei genre on steam is Natural Selection 2, so i will do a little compare/contrast at the end of this.

The good:

-Excelent RTS gameplay. UI is basic, and at times a little clunky, but in general it gets the job done for both macro and micro management of building, upgrades, and resources. The biggest problem is relying on your soldiers to defend your structures and get you resources.

Broken Lines

Broken Lines

It is an “ok” game if you have no better alternatives. The reason I gave a thumb down is because of so many super positive reviews with which I disagree and think they distort the picture here.

TACTICS / GAMEPLAY - 3/5

The challenge curve is rather flat, mostly without any complex or demanding situations. Maps are all very similar in terms of combat challenges (very similar setups of obstacles, terrain, challenges etc).

One of the top reviewers here complained about pulling extra pods in Xcom due to bad mechanics - IT IS THE SAME HERE! Once you spot 1 enemy then the time does not stop when you discover more enemies. So you end up pulling more and more enemies and your soldiers once told to go somewhere, will never abort the order even if going straight into the enemy guns.

I would recommend Broken Lines for those seeking a simpler, yet more raw/ intense tactics gaming experience than XCom. If you’re just a fan of third person tactic games and want to try something with a neat tactical twist, Broken Lines is a great purchase.

Differences from your average squad based tactics game:

  • Biggest difference is the 8 second command increments. You provide your soldiers a series of orders to execute in sequence, then let time flow and see how they worked out.

  • Set characters means being able to bake in things like how your soldiers work together or interact based on your back story.

Mythic Zombies

Mythic Zombies

This is a throwback to old school zombie shooters and challenge based gameplay, jump in a map alone or with friends and see how long you can survive. You earn points for kills, use point to re-arm and buy upgraded guns, kill more zombies, open the next section of the map and carry on killing.

This is an Early Access game in development and as such there are some bugs, missing features, content not included yet, tweaks to make and so on, so go into it with an open mind, grab some friends and heads and limbs off until they are dead or you are, it’s fun, mindless unadulterated fun.
