Extremely fun naval warfare, fairly well done campaigns that lets you play as both Allied forces and IJN, as well as a good variety of Skirmish maps and modes.
Island capture mode can keep you busy and having fun for hours, with a huge variety of units and tactics available- you can build up a sizeabe fleet and wrest control of Islands by way of LST’s and Cargo ships, or parachuting units in by air. The naval battles themselves are intense with visual damage and listing to ships that have suffered heavy barrages, and some of that damage remains even after repairing which adds a nice touch of immersion.

This is a very good game. Like you may know already, the stupid GFWL issue makes things more complicated. I was able to play and completed this game on Windows 7 after some tweaking. Years later, I found the tweak no longer worked with Windows 10 as it took forever to log into GFWL (You can play it without logging in, but it won’t save). I found another workaround, played it. Then I changed my computer months later, and this time the workaround was not working again, crashing immediately into the game. Yes, this is extremely annoying, until I finally found xlive.dll. This is better than a workaround. Instead, it get rid of GFWL completely and just save your progress locally. Just throw the file into the game folder simple as that.

I have been waiting for a VERY long time for any successor of Koei/Microcabin’s Naval Ops: Warship Gunner/ Warship Commander series. Waves of Steel is by far the closest to the original with considerable improvements to the ship design process. Of course, since this is 2021, it also supports modding.

This is a very good game in the vein of the PS2 Naval Ops series, specifically Warship Gunner 2. You design a ship, face off against overwhelming numbers of enemies, and then pick up new techs to build a newer, better ship the next time around. This allows for some experimentation, possibly adding dozens of guns to a ship or removing them all in favor of torpedoes. Additional systems can be added to improve radar range, rate of fire and the like. There’s no single “best” build even if the game gives progressively better options. Between flags, decals and paint jobs, every ship really ends up feeling like it’s yours.

1971: Indian Naval Front
1971 : Indian Naval Front is a Naval Combat game made as a tribute to the Indian Navy towards their contribution during the 1971 India-Pakistan War.
_1971 was a year filled with diplomatic tensions between India and her neighbour Pakistan. As the atrocities by the Armed Forces from West Pakistan against the people of East Pakistan kept increasing, Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India decided to act on it and determined to liberate East Pakistan(Bangladesh) as an independent country. During the months of October and November in 1971, Indian Navy sent her famed aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and few more powerful vessels to create a blockade against the naval vessels of West Pakistan and her allies in the Bay of Bengal to the East. Pakistan Air Force, on 3rd December, attacked multiple Indian airfields along the North and North West regions of India.
The War had now officially begun!
In retaliation, the Indian Navy sent 3 of her Osa-I class missile boats in an operation codenamed Operation Trident with an objective to destroy the Karachi Harbour. Operation Trident was a resounding success! After this point, major naval operations were kicked off in both the Eastern and Western waters; an encounter with the Pakistan Navy’s Submarine PNS Ghazi being one of them. Indian Navy’s fighter jets like the Hawker Seahawk were also used to destroy many East Pakistani Airfields and Harbours like Chittagong and Cox Bazaar.
On 16th December, Pakistan eventually signed the Instrument of Surrender and Bangladesh was declared an independent country.

As someone who really want’s to like this game, and I truly do want to like it, I’m sorry to say that I can’t really recommend this game in it’s current state. The gameplay is fine and can be fun, specifically when your right up in the action having the ship maneuver to avoid torpedoes and air attacks, and launching submarine attacks on convoys and task forces.
But while the core gameplay is really solid, the fact that it is so filled with bugs and glitches makes it really difficult to enjoy what’s there. Ships can just disappear from a taskforce, even though it is possible to find their models and still click and control them manually. I’ve had a case where I lost an entire taskforce of submarines to limbo because of a glitch despite the fact I was able to use said submarines to sink a flotilla’s worth of destroyers. I’ve had a similar case where I lost three battleships to limbo when I tried to control them manually.

Strategic Mind: The Pacific
I really wanted to like this game. I really liked the graphics initially and my initial impression on game play wasn’t that it wasn’t bad. But then I realized you get the same graphic if you bomb or torpedo a ship. I mean shouldn’t you use the time you spent making useless swimming sharks to make different graphics for each?
As far as game play goes, your planes die quickly and inflict the same or less damage as a destroyer. And Japanese planes seem to have nearly unlimited fuel. I destroyed all of the Japanese carriers in Midway and five turns later his planes are still attacking my ships and troops. But if I go more than three turns without landing I seem to run out of gas. Worst of all the AI turns take forever.

I have a rule of saying that if a game is fun, the other things are just the icing. Bad visuals? Corny sounds? Bad controls (note: non-real-time games only)? They can be overlooked.
I have found the game that is the exception to my own rule.
So, to get this out of the way first: This game is a turn-based-strategy game, with a point-buy system for your units, persistent-army mechanic, Hex-grid battlefield, and a basic system of “supply” for ammo, fuel, and repair to damaged units on a turn-by-turn basis.

Submarine War
Hello/Bonjour Developer Deyin Song,
When I was a kid back in the sixties, my mom would let me play “Periscope” at Montréal Bonaventure train station.
The big arcade style machine, had it’s inner workings all in electric and mechanical systems.
No fancy electronics here, synchronized luminous bulbs, and immersive sound effects.
Of course Submarine War is not a U-Boat style complex game, but it triggered my nostalgia memories big time.
It runs smoothly, pretty good graphics, and a little strategy towards the middle of the levels.
